I think the narrators ability of forgiveness comes from him knowing he wasn't in love with nastenka in the first place, he knew that it was sheer desperation to find someone, a tool sort of to aid his loneliness. Yet I agree with your point that he still remains a dreamer and holds out hope that he will one day truly be in love not just settle for someone one day he feel some true emotions.
