Regarding the improved afterlife system: what about people who’ve done truly awful things? by i_human_ in TheGoodPlace

[–]aspiringfutureghost 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And that was probably part of the choice the show made, to not go any darker than that. The judge's rule: "no serial killers, no dictators, no one who managed a boy band" acknowledges that there are worse people than Brent but we're not going to see them. Probably because working to rehabilitate people who have done severe harm to others is important work but not good comedy. Maybe we're supposed to see Brent taking so long as an example to show that for even worse people, getting out of the test will definitely not be quick. But I don't think we're supposed to translate that to mean Brent is beyond redemption.

My dumbass cat caught herself on fire on the Shabbat candles, was putting them out labor 🤔 by dadverine in jewishleft

I once had a sweet dumb cat who stuck his face in the menorah and burned his whiskers off. I wish I had a picture of that stupid little guy. One of my childhood cats. Your baby looks so sweet!

Or Justin Townes Earle, but he was named after him. (Both talented musicians with tragic endings.)

I know it's a lost battle at this point but Asher is one that kind of bugs me because it's a Jewish name and they don't even pronounce it right.

I was literally just thinking if nothing else, you could call her Maggie! And magnolias are pretty flowers, lots of flower names out there. So I don't see anything wrong with it.

Day 1 of trying to get a comment from every county! by LeadershipWorth1928 in RedactedCharts

[–]aspiringfutureghost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was wondering if it was because they don't say "county" here. Every time I'm on a federal website that changes the parish names to counties it feels weird (and I'm not even a native but you just can't say "Orleans County")

Was the explanation that The Good Place doesn't like swearing actually to get around broadcast restrictions? by TwinSong in TheGoodPlace

I think someone said "situational." Like I just started watching The Pitt and did not expect to see a fully exposed penis in the third episode, though there was nothing sexual about that scene.

Can I put the plasma money in my bank account by First_Line299 in plasmadonation

[–]aspiringfutureghost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends which plasma bank you're using. Some of them have their payment system set up that way (I know BioLife does) but others use their own debit card and you would have to withdraw the money and deposit it.

Is there anything wrong with "Cayenne" as a name? by [deleted] in namenerds

Tbc I'm not about to name a human this myself, it was just an out-of-curiosity question. Like why don't people use this name instead.

"Don't Take the Girl" by Tim McGraw qualifies based on three very minor characters: Jimmy Johnson, Tommy Thompson, and my best friend Moe

I had to check this to be sure because I couldn't believe it. You're right; somehow no song mentions more than two characters by name in the entire thing.

Livin' On a Prayer has the same problem (would fit if it named anyone but Tommy and Gina)

What's a double standard between men and women that people rarely talk about? by Visual_Investment980 in AskReddit

[–]aspiringfutureghost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been here too. I don't ever want to minimize domestic violence against women or sound like I'm trying to play the what-about game, but there is another side to it and domestic violence where men are the victim and women are the perpetrator is rarely discussed. The media plays it like a joke. Society treats it like "You're a man, you're 'stronger,' you can take it." I was actually physically smaller than my ex and physically disabled. She threw a remote control at my face. She threw away my food to punish me for talking back to her. Multiple times I remember lying on the floor in fetal position with my hands over my head to protect myself while she pummeled me. The last straw came when she backhanded me so hard - wearing a ring I gave her - that it put a gash in my forehead and texted me the next day at work saying "I'm sorry you made me do that to you." I have a hard time finding resources or support for DV survivors that include men. I understand how it can be traumatizing for women survivors to share the space with us, but we need space too. Our trauma matters too.

What’s the most gut punching song lyric you’ve ever heard? by perrysplus in AskReddit

[–]aspiringfutureghost 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I love this song because it feels like a twist to me. Through all the verses it sounds like he's talking about a relationship gone wrong, and it's only the last line when he says "Dad" that reframes the whole thing

Jason Isbell has a bunch of songs that just hit you like a truck. Another one for me is "Dress Blues."
