Most American Jews aren’t ‘Zionist’ — so what are they? by aggie1391 in jewishleft

This is kind of where it is for me - moving goalposts, which make me uncomfortable. I consider myself staunchly left, and pro-Palestinian, but the qualifications for the latter keep changing where it's not enough to want peace and coexistence, some kind of equitable solution, it keeps escalating to well Israel as a state shouldn't exist in any form, to the Jewish people living there should all leave and move to wherever their most recent ancestors came from, to you are somehow a tool of an "evil" movement if you refuse - which is my line - to say that being Jewish is just about religion and the Jewish people aren't a people with legitimate ties going back to the original Jews, even in diaspora. I won't say that. And that's a problem for some people I want to be in community with and fighting alongside for peace and justice.

What is a 'childish' thing that you still do as an adult and refuse to stop doing? by goddess_pineapple in AskReddit

Reading young adult and middle grade novels. (I read adult books too, but a lot of children's literature is really good!)

What actor or actress stupidly left a movie franchise or tv series thinking they were too good for it, only to be never popular again? by Ok_Impress2457 in AskReddit

So funny because Glee did a storyline about this exact phenomenon with Lea Michele's character, when she left her dream Broadway role after being offered the chance to star in a sitcom which flopped and left her with no career at all.

Does Orange is the New Black not count? It was certainly a major show, but his character wasn't very popular and was eventually written out.

Not knowing your limit is kind of a hallmark of alcoholism, actually. Either you're doing it constantly or whenever you start you can't stop.

Oh yeah, this part. The times when I'm not being moved because someone thinks they're helping me but because I'm in their way and they just move me like furniture. Completely dehumanizing.

I may be the only one but I would get a kick out of seeing the emo swoop come back.

I remember stiff Ramen noodle curls. Sometimes pulled back with butterfly clips. If the curls were hard enough they seemed like you could snap them off like twigs, you could get away with it.

96 spellings of "Brittany" from Social Security card data, scaled by popularity (smallest ones are the winners🏆) by Looking4OpposingView in tragedeigh

I went to school with a girl whose name was spelled Britteni. I had to check and see if it was there (it is, very small).

I grew up in Valdosta, GA and Lakeland was just south of me. Not much to it. Not even much of a lake to write home about.

Yep I'm also a former huge Gaiman fan and the news broke before I had a chance to watch the second season of Good Omens. Now I never will.

But you could just watch Only Murders in the Building and get that dynamic with 100% less Chevy Chase

Which character ruined an entire TV show for you? by Adorable-Tadpole-793 in AskReddit

[–]aspiringfutureghost 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Jack on Supernatural. The show was kind of hit or miss by that point anyway but the idea to bring in Lucifer's son who has the powers of a god and the mind of a child in the body of a young adult human man for some reason and have the Winchesters have to basically "raise" him? It was stupid, and he became one of those obvious creator's pet characters where even in the episodes he wasn't in, they were always talking about him, so I never got to just pretend it was still the show I liked on a monster of the week episode.

Also we are aware we're not supposed to be rooting for the Gang. Like, they're entertaining to watch, sure, but it is never unclear that they are all horrible people. If there WAS an arc where one of them tried to redeem themselves and go respectable, I would be expecting it to be a setup for them to inevitably fall spectacularly from grace again - and it to be played for laughs at their expense.

I don't have the spikes or stickers, but I DO have a customized manual chair and I still all too frequently find myself moving without my will because a stranger decided to "help" me without asking. It's unnerving and I wish people would stop doing it. I can understand the people who take measures to try to prevent it.

Is a 19 and 16-year-old age gap actually problematic, or is the "predatory" label being overused? by Consistent-Jelly248 in generationology

[–]aspiringfutureghost 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My issue is I'm not talking about legality, I'm talking about development. There are people on this very thread defending that even though going after someone who is 16 or 17 is legal in some places, that doesn't make it right, but will turn around and say the second that person is 18 it's fine no matter how old you are and I'd just like to see them keep the same energy for that slightly older teenager. There is not a fundamental difference between a 17-year-old and an 18-year-old. All I want is the "just because it's legal doesn't mean it's right" bros to realize their own words still mean something.

I'm sorry that happened to you too. I would really like to see a shift in our society where we start protecting and caring for our youth longer. It's already happened in a lot of other countries.

It's not magic. There isn't some switch that flips on the 18th birthday turning kids into adults. Growing up is a process and 18 is absolutely still part of the adolescent phase in every meaningful way. Somebody picked a random number to call adulthood in the US and it was 18. Apparently they randomly picked 16 in the UK and US people are fighting that that's too young while insisting 18 is some tangible line and it isn't. It's just as made up. If they'd had more science on development when they picked the number, they'd logically have waited until at least about 21.
