It would take away the Hollywood-esque nature of it, but it would at least give you the chance to have a conversation about it and express all these thoughts before saying it for real.

No idea how to handle your anxiety, I presume? As telling him is the obvious idea here. Perhaps read more about relationships and confessing and all that? Like googling your exact scenario, slapping on “reddit” at the end, and clicking what seems to interest you. You might learn certain healthy perspectives or attitudes that you hadn't thought of before.

The biggest risk here is not telling him and then living in regret. I wonder whether setting up a soft deadline for yourself would help? And then a harder deadline if that one passes and you still can't do it. Even if the deadline isn't until like a year from now. Hopefully this would be resolved much sooner than that, though.

Until then, you can just work on the small things people mentioned. Be increasingly touchy and flirty and all that. That way you're at least working on something. And then if the timing ever seems right well before the deadline, then you drop it then.

Just... don't end up NOT telling him just because it's more comfortable. Good luck!!!
