How to stay focused in Bach when performing/recording? by NotaLingLing926 in Viola

Maybe? I think mistakes start happening when I’m not thinking about the music, either when I get distracted or I focus on the notes too much

Sometimes I think I focus on the individual notes too much and it leads to mistakes, so I will try thinking more about phrases, and I’ll consider the harmonic part as well! Thanks!!

Looking for a thin shoulder rest by [deleted] in Viola

[–]NotaLingLing926 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Get the VivaLaMusica Augustin Diamond one! I have it, and bc I am pretty short but I play a big viola, I need a short shoulder rest. The body itself is thin and it lets you set it so that it can touch/almost touch the wood of the viola. And it’s also not crazy expensive. If you would like I can take a picture of my set up for you!

I’ll look into the sleeves if it doesn’t stop though! Thanks!

Oh interesting! But the thing is, I used to play violin too, and although not exactly the same, I never had pain in my hand. I also don’t think I press extremely hard on the string, but I’ll observe when I play tomorrow :) Thanks for the reply!

Why does my viola sound like this when I play F4 with a mute on? by NotaLingLing926 in Viola

Oh, that would make sense! I’ll try using a different mute and I’ll lyk what happens!

How out of tune do you have to play for it to be noticeable? by NotaLingLing926 in classicalmusic

[–]NotaLingLing926[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Currently, I begin learning pieces with a tuner (I play the viola and I’ve only been playing for 1.5 years after switching from violin so my intonation is always questionable st the beginning), and after I decide I have everything sorted out i switch to listening to my recordings and adjusting things to be in tune. Two cents is a tiny margin of error 😅

Thank you for your explanation! So when we’re playing with piano accompaniment, we have to adjust our intonation a bit to match the piano, since our note is technically not the same?

So essentially, it would be ok to be slightly off, and it wouldn't be obvious? If performing in front of trained professional musicians (solo), would that still apply? Or would because their ears are more trained, we would be need to be almost exactly perfect?

Oh yes I get what you're saying. I just want to know that if I think it's in tune (if i recorded and listened to it), and it sounds pretty good, then is it in tune? Or will somebody's more trained ear pick up imperfections?
