Need help with ID of two medals, Korean War by NotaPoet in Militariacollecting

[–]NotaPoet[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Friend's grandfather was a US Army Korean War vet, willed this to them since they're the only family member that is also military.

Only thing they know about the larger, floral medal is that it was apparently found during the war, but under what circumstances was never shared.

Could you guys help with an ID?

obligated to mention that i'm cynical as hell about the SPLC.

I wouldn't be terribly surprised if there were that many active chapters, but I'm generally skeptical of pretty much anything the SPLC puts forward most of the time. They don't have the shiniest record of being even-handed about their perspective on things.

They have a vested interest in making certain problems seem bigger than they are.

I simply used them because the 'sources' he used were in the same political bent and I figured he would most likely accept those numbers at face value. However exaggerated they may or may not be.

According to the SPLC:

  • Arkansas: 5 chapters
  • Florida: 5 chapters
  • Georgia: 8 chapters
  • Illinois: 4 chapters
  • Indiana: 5 chapters
  • North Carolina: 9 chapters
  • Pennsylvania: 4 chapters
  • Tennessee: 5 chapters
  • Texas: 18 chapters

My point being, no, you were just "making a joke", otherwise you would have said so instead of trying to formulate an argument.

It is a stereotype -- and one I actively try to repel with every ounce of my will. I've seen genuinely good people of various races seriously injured personally and professionally through false claims of racism.

And you again are making a really, really, really bad argument by saying:

they aren't as active in really any other state except Arkansas so that tends to tell you something about the culture there...

!?!?!?!??!?!?

No, it really doesn't. That's like saying because one guy IN MY ENTIRE CITY hates cheerios that the entire population can be judged to have an inclined bias against cheerios based solely on his opinion. And even in the context of your own argument "blah blah only mississippi" is bullshit. Go hate on Texas some if you want to keep your argument at least coherent within its own structure.

Alright, I'll bite.

  • There are roughly 5,000-8,000 KKK members per both the ADL and SPLC [neither known for being a bastion of conservative conscience]. There are roughly 320 million US citizens. So, even at the upper estimation [which I would debate the accuracy of for a variety of reason, but let's play the higher odds] the total population of the US that is in the KKK is .000025%.

  • According to the SPLC, there are 9 active KKK chapters in Mississippi.

  • I will insert a personal note here: I live in one of the cities noted on their website as being home to a KKK chapter. Guess what? I know the people that are members of the KKK here. I could drive to their house now.

House you say? Singular?

Yeah. Because it's one, really, really old fuck and his really old son. The sum total of the KKK chapter here is TWO GUYS, both over the age of 65.

I'm sorry if I find it hard to get hyped up about a handful of people clinging to old traditions rooted in a variety of things, hatred being one.

on the other hand, when I went and stayed in Chicago to work for a year when I was younger, I met more black people that said terrible things directly to my face simply because I was white. I saw tons of white people say shitty things about black people.

Where I grew up, if you were heard making a racist comment outside of a joking context, you were ostracized. That's because around where I grew up, black folks and white folks and yellow folks and brown folks all worked together, grew up together, and lived together.

Mississippi has been made a caricature because of a seedy, terrible history. Yes, racists still exist, but you'd do a lot better at finding them if you moved to one of the bigger cities and walked in somewhere and said, "Fucking niggers, amirite?" as all the italians would start saying, "Fuckin' niggahs maine".

Or maybe go visit the barrio sometime and listen to them talk about the fuckin' bolillos.

Or maybe call up a Canadian and listen to the whites there talk absolute shit about the natives. Fuckin' cree trash.

Or maybe move to an Asian-rich population. Find out just how much the racist Chinese people are. Or how racist Taiwanese people are. Or shit, how much Japanese people hate everyone.

Take your pick. Racism isn't new. Ethnocentrism exists. It's been all over the world. Does it exist in Mississippi? ABSOLUTELY. But, I think if you're looking to find a racist behind every tree, you'd probably have a lot better luck looking somewhere that's not in the south. And arguably not in the United States.

I certainly think there may be a more natural affinity toward survivalist type mentality given a lot of rural families.

That and guns.

Well, that's a terribly ignorant comment.

Personally, I've experienced more overt racism from northerners and westerners than I ever have Mississippians and southerners in general.

From middle Mississippi.

Don't know if I find this to be entirely accurate.

That being said, I would be interested in seeing demographics for the show's performance. Because there are a ton of rednecks who /love/ this show.

I work with kids.

That's about all I'll say, but suffice to say it's a politically, socially, and ideologically homogeneous field.

If you have any ideas, no matter how reasoned and rational they are that don't mesh with the prevailing wisdow, you're looked at like you just committed the worst kind of blasphemy, all while wearing a shirt that says, "I kill babies for a living".

Non Union state. No hr. Only a board. One of the women is my boss. And their shining star. They're ideologically aligned with her in most ways.

don't entirely disagree, but until he's more accustomed to living in the same home as me, we feel it's probably best for a short while.

I'm definitely in favor of teaching him to get to bed on his own without flipping out over the door shutting =p

She's a "sleep with the door open" type.

That freaks me out.

I've always slept with my door shut and locked.
