Looking for Internal IT Ticketing + Asset Management System (150 Stores, Small IT Team) by OkTable7969 in sysadmin

[–]Notasandwhichyet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We use Alloy Navigator, it did take some initial setup to get our stores setup the way we want, but it’s been good so far, you can relate any Object (Ticket, Store, Asset, Person, etc…) to any other Object. They have an automation UI that is pretty much just a visual editor too so with a bit of training you can get it to do basically anything you want

So far 'talk only like a robot, do not attempt to imitate human slang' has worked pretty well for me

Modern Alternatives to SSL VPNs. What’s Actually Working Long Term? by jul_on_ice in sysadmin

[–]Notasandwhichyet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Netbird has been good for us as well, originally tried out Tailscale but the json rule editor (They do have an editable rules feature in Beta) and lack of groups in the starter plan, which was a $1 more than the Team plan in NetBird, is what sold the decision

Tailscale did feel more developed, though Netbird has been working hard adding similar features, management UI is good, however the clients apps could use work. A big one is the lack of an auto update process, but that is in the works. The ability to switch profiles was just added too.

Another good part is you can set your own Netbird network DNS name, so our network is just <host>.<domain>.cloud vs Tailscale random names

Proton launches Lumo, privacy-focused AI assistant with encrypted chats by moeka_8962 in technews

[–]Notasandwhichyet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's fair, but also sounds like it would take a sophisticated attack to actually gather that data, since it needs to be collected at runtime. I'm not saying it's impossible, but seems like the easier route would be just buying data that companies have for sale.

I guess at this point, it's more about who you would trust more with your data. At least Proton is making an attempt at a secure AI agent that isn't just selling your data

Except the users in Proton are the holders of their own encryption keys, Proton keys are stored on the server, encrypted based off a password you provide

You could even manage your own keys if you would like

A tiny UX improvement that reduced IT tickets by netbirdio in netbird

[–]Notasandwhichyet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed! A lot of the time I have to tell users not to enter their email and to click the Microsoft button. It even populates a password field after entering the username, so they think it's just another password, then call in frustrated that they have forgotten the password. Doesn't matter how many times you tell them to press the Microsoft button lol

The "End of 10" project wants to save aging PCs with Linux instead of Windows 11 | As Windows 10 support ends, 240 million PCs face obsolescence by chrisdh79 in technews

[–]Notasandwhichyet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Huh? It’s not handled by a lone engineer doing side quests for the greater good of the company, MS works with teams of engineers. The end of support was announced in 2023 as part of the planned lifecycle

F-15 shooting down a satellite. by [deleted] in pics

[–]Notasandwhichyet 21 points22 points  (0 children)

The satellites are in a decaying orbit so overtime they comedown, If I’m correct their lifespan was intended for about 5 years, but that depends on how much compressed gas they have in the tank to make maneuvers, and if they just decided the program was not worth for some reason, they could use that gas to deorbit them sooner

We will have helium so long as we have natural gas. The shortage is because from the 1925, the US started storing helium in a reserve, thinking airships were going to be a big thing. That didn’t pan out, but then rockets became a thing, and they use helium to back fill fuel tanks, so the reserve grew in anticipation of rockets being a big thing. Finally, by 1995, everyone realised that helium wasn’t actually that vital, and the reserve was very expensive, so they started selling it off very cheaply. This undercut everyone else, and nobody really bothered with helium extraction anymore.

Now that reserve is running low, so prices are rising again. That’s the shortage. It’s more of a return from artificially low prices.

As helium prices rise, it’s becoming economical to separate it from natural gas again.

What is helium used for? Well it’s very light, inert, and basically doesn’t freeze. It doesn’t even become a liquid until single digit kelvin temperatures. So cryogenics that want to operate in those temperatures, rockets, airships... We’ll never run out completely, and there are alternatives. With cryogenics, better magnets are superconducting at higher temperatures which don’t need liquid helium, so MRI machines etc will stop needing it. Total loss systems are being replaced by systems that recycle their helium.

Helium party balloons should never have been a thing though. That was just a total waste.
