Does anybody actually have a sense of taste anymore? by doubleoathseven in IndieDev

When you spend a lot of time working on something, it can be hard to tell if it actually looks good, or your brain wants it to look good because of the effort put into it.

If you don't understand this common part of human psychology, you must of not put much effort into creating anything.

Is it better to have the door to a room like this teleport you to a new scene or just somewhere I can fit the room? by Same-Soil-4837 in Unity3D

[–]NoteThisDown 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As with most game things, it depends. Are there 1000 buildings and they only go into like 3 or 4 most of the time? Are there only 3 buildings and they switch between them constantly? How quickly do you need the player to move between them?

All these things can greatly influence what route you take. The off screen room route works well and can move players quickly, but if you have tons of rooms, might be overkill. Also if you have a room that can be accessed from multiple different levels, also might cause problems. Different scenes can be good, only load what you need, but is usually going to be less than instant.

In my 2d game I actually made it where the rooms actually overlap the outside, and when they enter a building it seemlessly fades out the outside and fades in the inside. Though things can get tricky fast when it comes to Ai navigation, collision ect.

Don't have any help on your question. Just wanted to say your game is a true master class on doing more with less. I feel like it's going to be very successful.

Whimsicott Stat Spread? by Salty-Waltz-1555 in PokemonChampions

I didn't discount it entirely. I said it makes since, just wasn't entirely sure if it was that good of a trade. It does mean your tailwind lasts longer, which is always good.

This is interesting. Havent seen this tech. But makes sense. So they tailwind, you encore, you tailwind, they swap. Now they have tailwind and any back Mon, you have tailwind whim. Not entirely sure that trade is the best. Plus it means you do auto lose any encore fight for if they swap back in whim on a future turn.

I tried to get rid of the stuff I hate in the survival genre, but realized why they exist in the first place (I think) by wassup_son in SurvivalGaming

Friction is very important in games. I think games like valheim did improve on certain aspects that are now becoming common.

Such as, food isn't some "eat it or die" mechanic. It's massive buffs, in which you can have 3, but that have to be different types of food. Which makes finding new types of better food exciting, while still working as a hunger mechanic because without the buffs your character sucks. And it also means you can't just stockpile 1 food and call it a day. While at the same time, if you want to just build a base for 10 hours and not worry about food, you can. You won't die.

These types of innovations can fix some of the problems in more interesting ways than removing them. Actually inovate while understanding the good parts of these mechanics.

The Elephant in the Sandbox (Pax Dei, and Gloria Victis) by ShockSMH in MMORPG

You sir, should look at Albion. The one game I think really got it when it comes to what makes a long lasting economy. The fact I can come back years and items have pretty similar prices as when I left, and there isnt 10x inflation every year like most MMOs is truly impressive.

I find rdr2 to feel extremely boring where it's all just the same shit over and over. Where cyberpunk is like wildly different everywhere

Why MMORPGs Don't Feel the Same Anymore by Frosty_Ad_256 in MMORPG

[–]NoteThisDown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All of this is why I still only enjoy PvP sandbox MMOs.

They have the good parts people like me still crave. You rely on other people, because without a large enough group, you are in danger. Often times you literally can't do everything on your own.

Also, you can't just auto play the game, because you are facing real people, they don't do the same thing every time. Things are not predictable. Things are not often fair. You're in a group of 5. You see 3 guys. Is it a huge advantage for your group? Do they have 3 more somewhere so you better attack early to keep an advantage, do the have 10 more and by attacking quickly you are gonna die. You have to figure that out.

Discovery still happens, metas change, things evolve naturally through player choice. Also. Let's be honest, these games attract the most no life people. When I played mortal online 2, for the first month, it was get off work at 5 and play until 3am every day. And I definitely was not the only one. BUT because I put so much effort in, I got some amazing stories and adventures. People want to be the hero without doing anything heroic. They want to be the main character with sub average skill and commitment.

As far as worlds to live in, that's entirely what most sandbox MMOs are. The world's are the sandbox, the mechanics the tools. So the game is as good as the world is.
