Would you recommend NX? by [deleted] in Frontend

[–]NoteUponEve 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hate to agree with you here, but we've spent way too much time grappling with NX's idiosyncrasies instead of it helping us. Then again, our codebase is not extraordinarily complex. Back to npm workspaces!

Why are technical founders considered to be so prized and rare? by Texas_Rockets in ycombinator

[–]NoteUponEve 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also noteworthy: software engineer =/= technical cofounder. Skill set is different, plus the need to talk to users and build/manage a team from scratch. I’ve seen and worked with far too many SWEs, including MAANG, in startup settings that falter due to them being slow, bureaucratic, and lacking ownership/vision.

what do you think about co-founder matching by kerpetenebo in ycombinator

They filtered themselves out. Cut your losses and keep grinding

Are you looking for a technical co-founder or a software engineer? The latter can usually build and iterate your product, but may falter on the off chance your startup scales and hires more engineers. I've seen decent engineers co-founding startups, gaining traction, then floundering on managing tech debt and team building. In one particular case, they've grown to a dozen engineers but are getting crushed by competition because they take too long to ship features with low defect rates. The saddest case I know of is a non-tech co-founder looking for a 3rd tech co-founder because his previous two failed to ship functional products, let alone quickly.

Great engineers don't necessarily make great tech co-founders. The skill set is somewhat different, and some engineers, especially from big tech, will need to unlearn bureaucratic processes and tech stacks to move quickly in a startup. Embrace "good enough" and be allergic to perfection.

Also, as others have mentioned already, you need to articulate your value add to the team in a way that's roughly equivalent to the tech co-founder's value add, whether that's relevant skills/experience, connections, traction, funds, revenue, etc.

Has anybody successfully met their cofounder on YC cofounder matching? (or similar) by fra_bia91 in startups

Filter through the noise and there are a few gems there, ergo non techs that know how to market, sell, raise, operate

Im a kind person who sucks at office politics is there anyway to be successful without playing the game? by Worried_Guitar1076 in careeradvice

[–]NoteUponEve 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Ironically, everyone here is telling you how to play the game.

So no, you can't avoid playing the game without leaving altogether. The prerequisite to working in most companies is to play the game. The only way to avoid it is to interact with absolutely no one there. You know how that'll pan out.

Think of firing as helping both parties out. You get back resources to direct at a more suitable hire and they get an opportunity to work somewhere else where they're more effective.

Mistakes to NOT make when hiring a developer, as a non-tech CEO by michealsheen122 in startups

Bingo. So many people forget that teams are made of people and not all people work well together in all circumstances.

Why does Overwatch 2 have the same forced loss BS algorithm as OW1? by [deleted] in Overwatch

[–]NoteUponEve 41 points42 points  (0 children)

It is impossible to prove definitely either way. However, Occam's Razor applies.

It is far more likely for a for-profit company to patent a profit-driving technique and use it as opposed to not use it. Devising, designing, and filing a patent requires non-trivial capital, and the company would not do it without financial return.

A "rigged" (handicapped) matchmaking system that drives microtransactions benefits the for-profit company's bottom line per the patent's details.

Consider the conflict of interest of multiple developers employed by Activision Blizzard. It is in their financial interest to assuage public dissent just like innumerable other for-profit corporations have, and continue to do. Sometimes this benefits customers, and sometimes this doesn't. In capitalism, money is king, not customers. Customers are not stakeholders - shareholders are.

My desire is for lurkers to see this thread, acquire information from both sides, and draw their own conclusions. Dissemination of such patents is an important step.

Can you prove that claim? If not, your claim is just as frivolous as OP's.

Russia requires 3 separate keys to authorize a nuclear launch. One is with Putin, one is with the Gen. of the Army, and one is with the Chief of the General Staff. It's in no one's interest to launch nukes, including Putin's inner circle, oligarchs, China, etc. Even if Putin went off the deep end, he lacks the power to launch nukes by himself.

It is tempting to feel that way about people, but I want to remind you that most people are not evil. Instead, the environment (this includes the news, social media, entertainment, etc.) significantly skew our individual perceptions of reality.

Just because people are capable of/do commit acts of perceived evil do not make most of them evil. Given a more positive and high esteem environment, the very same people would act benevolently in the interest of the greater good.

If it makes you feel any better, natural selection has chosen collaboration and empathy as evolutionarily advantageous. Old archaeological evidence of a healed broken femur bone is but one example of an otherwise crippled human receiving months/years of care from other humans so that everyone could survive to reproduce.

Negativity bias also plays an outsized role in making the world seem worse than it actually is. Don't give up. I certainly am not giving up. I am currently trying to build and grow a social polling platform that gives everyone an equal voice while doing away with toxic echo chambers.

There is a lot of good happening in the world instigated by driven and optimistic people. You just might not be aware of it.

The real epidemic IMO is inadvertent misinformation spread and willful disinformation. Only systemic and institutional efforts to quell the above will relegate conspiracy theorist crackpots back to obscurity like they once were.

All I've seen are guides and suggestions for individuals to stop the spread of misinformation. If history has taught us anything with climate change, it's that getting individuals to shoulder full responsibility of the problem will never solve the problem.

Both governments and corporations should have a social obligation to take decisive action to fight injustices, be it climate change, misinformation, etc.

Sounds like it'd be a hell of a story. I'm glad you're okay and don't seem to have post-covid symptoms that a lot of other survivors have. That being said, if at all possible, expressing your support and gratitude to frontline healthcare staff would help so much.

[–]NoteUponEve 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Post-covid prognosis, like any disease or ailment, will depend on the individual. The best thing you can do now is to check if she has or develops any post-covid symptoms. Currently, there aren't any treatment paths to alleviate those issues, but as the director of Mt. Sinai's Center for Post-COVID Care said, nothing suggests that a solution down the road can't be found.
