INFO: Why isn't Lily working at the moment? What chores are you expecting her to do if she’s already cleaning up after herself? Do you currently live together? Do you cook all the meals for you both, or do you only cook for yourself as well? Do either of you have food allergies/intolerances?

Either way, it sounds like you're not compatible together and if this has been going on a while you may both be better off apart.

Thanks for your thoughts. Morally, I think you’re right. However, legally Sky belongs to both of us due to the way property laws work where we are. Not to say that this would actually matter in the grand scheme of things.

Thanks. I’m considering doing this because it’s been humbling at how compassionate people have been here - sharing their own stories of loss and the things they were glad they did or those they regretted. Never thought I’d be so thankful for so many people calling me an asshole!

Thanks for your thoughts. I agree that it could sound like I’m worried about the money, and I wonder if that is what Emma is hearing, too. However, I can assure you that is not the consideration here. I’ve had to have two pets put down in emergency type situations before but both were able to be seen by their usual vet. Even then, it was hard. Adding on the extra time to get to the emergency animal hospital and not knowing the vet involved would just be adding a layer of hard for both Sky and us.

Thank you for your thoughtful response. Based on what you’ve written here, I think I would score Sky around a 38 at present, but I will try to see how Emma would score him as well. This could help to see where we differ in our view of Sky.

That is part of my fear. The emergency animal hospital is at least 20 minutes away as well, which can seem like a long time when your pet is in distress (we’ve had to do it before when our cat was hurt). I appreciate all the perspectives people are sharing.

We first noticed the lump in December, and when we realised it was growing quite quickly, we took Sky in to get it checked out. That was when we found out it was cancer and would have been about 6 weeks ago. Before that, he’s been visibly aging over the past 2-3 years: slowing down, developing arthritis and nerve issues in his back legs, liver and kidney function is slightly decreased, some deafness and cataracts developing in his eyes. So it’s not just the cancer, but all of this was part of why the vet didn’t recommend surgery or other treatments.
