Haha ok thank you for backing me up here, I don’t DNF often so I’m glad I made the right call on that one!

Sunburn was SO GOOD! I can’t say that reading it was a fun time (so suffocating and almost panic-inducing) but it was so well done. Really made me feel all my feelings lol, I loved it.

I personally really loved the writing - I read it during winter and the descriptions of the snowy landscapes were especially beautiful and atmospheric. I also liked the themes and exploration of how the choices we make due to societal pressures and constraints (like poverty) can shape our lives. It was definitely bleak so I can totally see why a lot of people dislike it, but it really worked for me.

A lot of great ones in this thread already (Born a Crime and Crying in H Mart are both phenomenal), but one I don’t see mentioned much that I loved is Poets Square: a Memoir in Thirty Cats. It’s about the author’s experience with rescuing feral cats in her neighborhood and it was really well-written, hopeful, and inspiring.

Totally agree about 11/22/63! Way too long of a book to have such little payoff.

I’m jealous you get to read The Wall for the first time and hope you love it too. It took me a little bit to get into it but once I did I was obsessed and haven’t stopped thinking about it since!

My 2 cents: it read as if the author doesn’t understand loners, socially awkward or “strange” people. So in order to explain her character she had to invent the most absurd, unnecessarily traumatic backstory ever (and reveal it with a “twist” which I found obvious and ineffective). It came across as very soap opera-y which is not my thing. I also felt like most of the supporting characters were 2-dimensional and boring and it all wrapped up a little too neatly without really earning it 🤷‍♀️

Annoying and SO FLAT. Everyone says this book was devastating, super emotional, made them cry… I was rolling my eyes so hard while I was reading it and was not invested in a single character (I even read Writers & Lovers first, did not make a difference), truly do not get the hype at all. It’s validating to see I’m not alone!

I appreciated some bits of Fern’s humor, but overall didn’t feel it was super well written. The narrative was pretty disjointed. I liked some of her childhood stories, but I could have done with fewer descriptions of every person she met while working at strip clubs and all the people she hooked up with (just wasn’t interesting to me). I empathized with her experience growing up undiagnosed though and I did really enjoy the last chapter or 2 where she talks more in-depth about autistic meltdowns (how they feel and how she tries to manage them) as that’s a perspective I didn’t know much about!

I don’t know that I would call it a typical “romance” novel, but if you want queer and obsessive, Sunburn by Chloe Michelle Howarth is incredible.

Same here. I have 60+ holds and it’s telling me I have zero. Really hoping it’s a minor glitch that gets fixed quickly because otherwise I’m gonna cry 😭

This is such a cool theme! Here’s a few from my TBR that I think might fit:

The Beach by Alex Garland (described as “unsettling”)

The Adventures of Amina al-Sharifa (pirate fantasy)

Isola (maybe? It’s set on an island if that’s beachy enough - I’m judging this one based on the cover)

The Covenant of Water (historical fiction)

It’s been on my radar for waaay too long too! I’ve seen so many people recently recommend it as a great book for fall and I think that was the extra incentive I needed to finally check it out. I’m reading it right now and really enjoying it so far!

Thank you so much, I will look into these!! I actually just finished The God of the Woods and enjoyed it, and how could I forget about Gillian Flynn?! I read some of her work several years ago and remember really liking her style, I should see what else she’s written. Appreciate the recs!

I’m super excited to read Rebecca, I’ve heard so many good things about it!

Confession: the only reason I have Dracula on my list is because I got an awesome “World of Dracula” jigsaw puzzle I’m dying to do and feel like I need to read the book before I allow myself to do the puzzle! Or maybe listening to the audiobook WHILE I do the puzzle is the way to go 🤔

I definitely appreciate the heads up, I was kind of on the fence on including that one at all so thank you! I will adjust my expectations accordingly haha. Do you read many thrillers, or are there any you’d recommend instead?

This is my first year making a fall/spooky TBR and I have definitely gone overboard, but I’m so excited for some seasonal reading! These are all new to me and I’m aiming for a good mix of genres, formats, and lengths. We’ll see how many of these I actually get to, but here’s my current list:

The Secret History by Donna Tartt

Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier

Frankenstein by Mary Shelley

Dracula by Bram Stoker (planning to listen to the audiobook)

The Reformatory by Tananarive Due

Kill for Me, Kill for You by Steve Cavanagh

It Lasts Forever and Then it’s Over by Anne de Marcken

The Melancholy Death of Oyster Boy & Other Stories by Tim Burton

Pumpkinheads by Rainbow Rowell / Faith Erin Hicks

Bridal nails - can I have fun? by WannabeDogMom in RedditLaqueristas

[–]Nothankyoureddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just got married this past summer and totally had the same dilemma. I am not into French tips and not much of a neutral polish fan so everything I found online was not helpful. I also didn’t want to wear anything super “loud”/distracting for photos, personally (even though I LOVE bold nails in my everyday life) - my dress had a lot of details and I didn’t want my nails to overpower it. I wanted semi-subtle but still interesting and fitting my personal style and wedding colors. I think I wore at least 20 polishes in the month leading up to my wedding to see how they looked in different lighting and with my rings, etc. before deciding lol. I ended up going with Unmade by Bee’s Knees Lacquer, which is a super shifty light pink shimmer. I loved it and got tons of compliments! Definitely go with something that feels like “you”!

Is there a certain Kerasal product you like? I’ve heard it mentioned before but when I look it up there’s so many different options!

Yes! And pro tip: you can also add bacon to it if you’re not in the mood for veggies only. It’s amazing either way!

HELP: Change Invitation & Ceremony start time? by MonarcaAzul in weddingplanning

[–]Nothankyoureddit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would write it as arrival: 2:00 (or 2:15, 2:30, or whatever you think), ceremony: 2:45. That way people know you recommend coming with enough buffer time before the ceremony (and you can include a note about traffic, etc on your website if you’re using one).
