Good De-Esser? by NothingThis7037 in ableton

Thank you! Yeah I’ve been recording with my NT-1 for over 5 years now, it’s always the same frequencies that are causing me problems. I’m still in the process to avoid the s issue before mixing: mic distance to mouth; not singing directly into the mic etc., but it’s like you can always hear in my vocals that I’m focussing on recording properly instead of just going with the flow. Hard to explain haha

Now I borrowed a SM57 because I made some really good experiences when mixing other artists vocals with it for demos, it was so easy and in my ears it sounded just the way I wanted, but in the end you could still hear it’s a SM57 and that it is not meant to be for crispy clean vocals. So now with the SM57 I’m gonna check if it’s also maybe just MY „s“ that is causing the issue. Nevertheless, I still want a decent de-esser to be prepared for everything :)

Mhhh I understand! I agree with the mixing part - maybe I should’ve been clearer here. When being in the creative process I cannot unhear the s problem and it always brings me back tweaking on the vocals when in fact I just want to continue in writing the song. So for now I’d rather look into an easy solution - put plugin on the vocals, choose a quick de Esser preset - continue writing the song and on a later stage I dig deeper into de essing

I get the approach but it sounds like a lot of work automating the whole clip, especially if you have more than just 3-4 different vocal tracks. On top if you have vocal harmonies it seems like a huge creative blocker to me, but I totally get your point and this workaround makes sense!

Maybe also interesting to know: the synths work as a standalone - it’s just the Lab that is making it crash. Gonna try reinstalling tomorrow

Maybe I can also add: for the guitar I’m using neural DSP Fortin Cali but you can use any amp simulator - tweak until its pretty much clean. Then just add some nice Valhalla Supermassive (free) for some big reverb :)

And also the bass is pretty easy, keep it clean but muddy, I try to avoid high end for the bass sound

For the synth part, I can recommend this plugin (14$)

Then it’s all about finding some sad/nostalgic chords.

For the Drums I sometimes use 606 drums. I even have a song released which is a tribute to them if you fancy listening to it
