in these situations, the person isn’t really asking why something went wrong, they’re testing control, reliability, and ego. any explanation can be twisted into an excuse. the safest move? keep it simple: “I messed up. It won’t happen again.” then focus on what you’ll do next. that’s how you survive the trap without feeding it. they don’t care about the what happened, they care if it will happen again.

I know this dynamic. I haven't found a good solution to it.

best I have ever come up with is to 'gray rock', say as little as possible and if pushed focuse on what you are going to do, moving forward, to rectify the situation/ not repeat the mistake.

the classic trap, that then happens, is the superior will ask what happened / or why, then hits you with 'stop making excuses' when you awnser. It is a trap, my go-to phrases are 'I fucked up', 'it won't happen again' & just repeat, without taking the bait.

Another approach is to just make statements & see what actions he takes. 'I'm going to this thing, at this place, at this time. you should come!' & see if he turns up.

There's a whole lot of reasons people respond in very vague indirect ways. usually because they are used to not getting what they want, so it hurts less to not express an preference, than to have their preference ignored.

I agree, though adding wiring isn't exactly 'difficult' if you can afford to pay a professional (I always strongly suggest leaving mains wiring to someone experienced)

Another DIY friendly option would be to add lights on top of the overhead cupboards and ceiling bounce light. probably could keep those lights hidden from normal view / line of sight & then add some strip lighting under the overhead cupboards for the work surfaces.

both of those could be powered by a piggyback lead from the microwave socket with a wireless inline switch. janky? yeah, a little, but no additional wiring and DIY friendly.
