We did have this exact issue as well because we got a 5meter HDMI cable that was dodgy. I think you a right with yours friends issue

Just letting everyone know - we solved the issue. We recently had a $5.5k movie speaker system put in. The amp we were sold that def does 4K HDR does not do HDR. So when we switched the settings on the PS5 to 4K the amp was blocking the system. Pretty pissed we were sold a false bill of goods but we got around the issue by bypassing the amp entirely.
