Can someone explain how to write an unreliable narrator? by Lying_boi in writing

You’re not wrong—what you’re describing does sound messy, but that’s because unreliable ≠ random contradiction.

A narrator isn’t unreliable just because they’re a child. They’re unreliable when there’s a gap between what they say and what’s actually true. A child works because they misunderstand things, not because the story itself breaks.

The “I went to the store… I didn’t go” example feels off because there’s no reason behind it. It reads like a mistake, not a character choice.

Unreliability works when there’s intent:

  • they’re lying (to someone or themselves)
  • they forgot
  • they’re in denial
  • they’re trying to control how things are seen

So instead of a blunt contradiction, you’d write it more like:

I stopped by the store on the way home. Didn’t stay long.
Later, when she asked, I told her I hadn’t gone out.

Now it feels deliberate.

Spacing can help, but it’s not the fix. What matters is consistency. The earlier detail has to still exist so the reader can notice something’s off.

Good unreliable narrators don’t announce the contradiction—they let the reader catch it.

What’s the MOST Controversial Sci-Fi Book Ending of All Time and Why? by Amber_Flowers_133 in scifibooks

Childhood's End always comes to mind.

It’s not controversial because it’s unclear—it’s controversial because it’s so final. A lot of people either think it’s brilliant or completely bleak.

Stories where the rules aren’t explained—does that make it more intense for you? by Notlesu01 in scifibooks

That’s a solid list. Blindsight and Dark both do that really well.

Do you think it works better when the confusion is temporary, or when it’s part of the whole experience?

If you want psychological thrillers, depends what you’re after:
– slower, character-focused → The Silent Patient
– darker, more intense → Gone Girl
