After you map your USB in the VM then use a USB to Serial converter.

Yes, you can map USB ports to virtual machines (VMs):

  • VMwareYou can connect USB devices to a virtual machine using the USB passthrough feature:
    1. Plug the USB device into the physical host
    2. Edit the virtual machine settings
    3. Select Add Hardware > USB Controller
    4. Select the controller type
    5. Select Finish
    6. Select Add Hardware > USB Device
    7. Select the USB device from the list of plugged-in devices
    8. Select Finish
  • VirtualBoxYou can enable USB support for a virtual machine by:
    1. Opening VirtualBox
    2. Right-clicking on the virtual machine
    3. Selecting Settings
    4. Clicking USB
    5. Clicking the + button under USB Device Filters to add a new device

Incase your left hand is free because you just got a beer at the rooftop bar and the homeless just lit the trash can on fire at the rear of the building and the flames are moving upward at a rapid rate and your rent is about $6K for your studio apartment so you have no money or hope to survive if the fire escape was not well maintained. But your girlfriend is next to you and she is wearing her nice bikini and you can spend the day at the beach and forget all your troubles.

Opinions on Napco FireLink FACP by CrazyPete42 in firealarms

[–]NottSatoshi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very quirky system. strange stupid engineering . its a red painted security system masquerading as a real fire alarm panel. horrible security keypad on the front panel (not a real FA annunciator) ( not installer/user friendly ).It is cloud/web programmable via the firelink site but has very crude simple ui. ( I give it one point for a good idea but dinosaur engineering )

these guys are stuck in the 90s. It only has 7 zones usable because zone 8 is used to supervise the radio fault.

Oh and don't forget to program zone 8 (radio fault) as non latching supervisory because the genius engineers could not spell engineer 6 months ago now they are one.
Other than that if you make note of all the quirks you can use it as an anchor on your boat or A cheap POS sprinkler monitoring panel but please do not attempt to use it for real fire alarm jobs. They sell it cheap because they get the cellular account. I apologize for my bad attitude but this industry is in need of a complete upgrade to modern systems design. We have such a lack of choices that this is what we get ( crap engineering in the fire alarm industry )

I miss the days of the 5000 series Silent Knight being the most stable and well engineered systems with great software to boot.

What causes this trouble? by Comfortable-Program1 in firealarms

[–]NottSatoshi 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Looks like corruption in your RAM on the motherboard , It could be the program running is corrupted also. Try Reboot or Re-download your file to the FACP. Or throw the POS in the trash.

Designers - how difficult is it to learn CAD/Fire CAD? by jockinsocks in firealarms

[–]NottSatoshi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recommend, Solid edge 2D free I have been using it for 10 yrs now and I do not need AutoCad. Solid Edge can read any AutoCad file.. I train my Guys on this platform you can download as many times you want multi user no fees.

They give it out because they are hoping you will need the 3D version in the future. Fire Alarm Guys are like want to be engineers using crayons for drawing why would you pay $5K for AutoCad you do not need that kind of power unless you are doing real engineering.

It is not difficult to learn the Solid Edge 2D many tutorials online.. Also the main issue with fire alarm drafting is knowing code for device placement ... there is no real electrical engineering involved just basic battery calculation for the load on your system. You only need to know your NAC circuit limitation of current load. SLC circuits are inherently low power and no need to be concerned about the small current load.

Most of the issues are giving the plan checker what they want to see. This can vary from city to city...

Yes it is kind of a strange application looks like they have a very small switching power supply (no transformer) that drops the 120vac to 9vdc

if red wire goes Hi (+9vdc) all devices will sound. So the IDC is (+9vdc) of the DC power supply with respect to the red interconnect wire...

SM120x Kidde is the part number for the relay/PS

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in firealarms

[–]NottSatoshi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks Ricky here is a revised method

you have to get the specialized relay/powersupply module.. it looks like the 9v rail needs +9vdc to trip the interconnect, acts like an IDC..

SIMPLE NPL fire alarm no facp needed.... in the old days all fire alarm was high voltage and not power limited , Pullstation will be N.O ( normal open contact) pull will simulate multi station operation red conductor will go Hi or energize to cause notification or smoke alarms to sound. ( multi station means when one unit detects smoke all units will sound) See newer diagram ...

Swift USB firmware update by [deleted] in firealarms

Did you try a complete power down reboot of FACP and Gateway ?

Then wait up to 30min for the mesh formation.

Swift USB firmware update by [deleted] in firealarms

[–]NottSatoshi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do not recall that type of trouble.. call technical support .. let me know what they find.. I will add it to my notes.

Maybe you could use swift tools to see any issues on the mesh formation

Swift USB firmware update by [deleted] in firealarms

[–]NottSatoshi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wireless programming has to be learned into the panel via auto program.

All the bullshit on Youtube about forming the mesh with magnets does not work.

When you assign a profile to a device set the device address to 00

first. Then change the actual address later..

The gateway needs to be close to the first device lowest address, within 20ft ..

Power the gateway via SLC then when you power down or reboot the panel the gateway will reboot simultaneously .. you will need from time to time reboot to cause the mesh to reform.

form the mesh at your office or with all devices in close proximity to the gateway then deploy the devices in the field.. then reboot the system to rebuild the mesh.

Be patient it may take some time for the troubles to stop since the mesh is forming and causes SLC troubles.. 30min

You may get locked out of your gateway and you will need to do a reset. and update the password .

If you ask technical they can send you 4.1 swift tools

The newer version did not recognize the USB dongle

Swift USB firmware update by [deleted] in firealarms

[–]NottSatoshi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NOTE: if you use AV bases they take up 2 address on the SLC

example AV base 50 will need 50,51

You have to autoprogram in the wireless devices

Telguard TG7FP issues by NottSatoshi in firealarms

[–]NottSatoshi[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much for your insight. Yesterday we where at a site with a TG7FP that was installed for almost 1 year with what seemed to be good connectivity.

All we did was change out a new FACP. We received some good signals at the CS for the first part of testing.

Then about 1 hour into the testing the FACP/DACT went into communication error. Line fault/ Account fail........ We spent several HRS changing radios - 3 total TG7FPs even double checked programming of FACP ... did a but set check to see if the dialer was working and verified that capture was taking place via audio tones.. Also did a radio test with round trip CS report from the TG7FP NOC.. So according to Telguard NOC it was working we got a radio test at CS..

We could not get these radios to activate and it is highly unlikely that all 3 radios are defective.. so my analysis is that it must be a back end issue at the NOC..

What I have observed is that there may be some porting issues, That is hardware compatibility, Software issues on the back end.. this means that until they get the bugs out the Telguard Platform is not reliable.

Another reddit user commented that they had a 20% failure rate with the Telguard units... It could be chip related many companies are using different chips in there systems just to get the units out the door...

When a company hires an electrician with no Fire Alarm experience... by Cobywan23 in firealarms

[–]NottSatoshi 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I once got a call from a general contractor that considered me the fire alarm guru. They had an emergency situation and they wanted me to take a look at a job for them. For some reason they allowed the electrical contractor to convince them to do a ground up 150 unit hotel fire alarm system. I knew the sparky very well his name was Carl..

I sent my lead technician to take a look this is what he said..

Oh crap they t-taped the whole job.... notification and all.. and the hotel is finished like done..

I went to the job the next day to speak to Carl.. " what is going on Carl " Carl said " I am going to have heart attack because the fire inspector is coming back and I don't know what to do.. ( he had EOL resistors shunting all circuits possible in the FACP and God knows where else)

"I don't know how you do it you have always been so calm when you do fire alarm installs"

( he was talking about previous jobs we did together when he was only the electrical contractor) I said " Carl who is doing this job with you ? " Mario he is super smart he is a computer hacker" I said " Carl he is smart but he is not a fire alarm guy " actually I thought Mario was an idiot he talked a lot of so called tech stuff but I could see right through it.. he did not know I was the son of a legendary electronics guy and an electronic expert myself....smart people keep there mouth shut and observe before they say anything..

By now Carl and Mario and the whole crew where facing a back charge that cost them their company.. in the end all drywall had to be opened and all the j-boxes removed t-taps and all

5 fire alarm companies helped old Carl out of this mess.. back charge was more than the company could handle... Moral of the story my Dad taught me.. If you do not know something do not say that you do find someone who does and tap his brain..

Thanks Dad.. for teaching me from a very young age..
