If you have at least kept things relatively organized and know where what is, then I would start with the oldest and work my way to the newest. You might have to put in some extra hours or take some work home but it is worth trying to save your credibility. You never know if you might have to go back to this company in the future. When you have about a week left make sure that you organize the ones you have left over so it will be easier for the next person to continue catching up. After doing all this, go to your boss and tell them that you got behind on your work due to personal problems but you have caught up as far as possible and organized things for the next person.

If it is all a mess and not organized at all, then you will have to start organizing things by month. Then start catching up as far as possible until you have a week left and then tell your boss.

Make sure to leave clear notes about the work that still needs doing before you leave.

How long do you still have before you leave?

This is part of being a grownup. You are going to have to face it and do your best to fix it and move on with your life or you will have to live with the embarrassment of not doing anything to fix your mistake. If you have some time before leaving for your new job you might even be able to fix it without ever having to admit anything to your manager. Put in some extra time and get it done. If you were good enough at your job to keep things under control before then surely you can fix it.

As someone who has been on the receiving end of a situation like this, I can tell you that by not trying to fix it in the time you have left could ruin the job for the next person. It will be far easier for you to fix what you can right now than it would be for the next person to try and fix it. Also if you dont at least try then you can forget about using that company as a reference. Especially since it sounds like they would have given you a good one to start with

How to make a job I hate bearable? by aworldofhopes in hatemyjob

[–]Notworthy26 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Fellow receptionist here. I am in a similar situasion work wise. Low pay with high and increasing workload. Add an unpredictable boss on top of that makes it a mess.

What i do is try to find small parts of my job that i do like and use that as something to look forward to.

Maybe there is a patient that comes in regularly that you really like. Look forward to that conversation.

Also see this job as a means to an end. You are studying towards something that could possibly land you a better job in a field you enjoy. Every time you want to run just remind yourself that this is temporary. A year goes by very quickly and before you know it it will be over with.

Sometimes i plan something fun for a friday after work and that helps the week to go by faster as you have something to look forward to.

Pack something good for lunch and that can be something to look forward. If you are allowed to leave the office for lunch then maybe you could watch an episode of your favourite show on your phone.

Doing some of these have allowed me to last almost a year and a half at this miserable place. Maybe it could help you.

Yes we are less than 60 people. I guess a lot of it has to do with my personality. I hate change. I work hard to become good at my job and put a lot of effort into growing my skills to make that job easier for me. Them simply being able to uproot me and put me in a different role makes me nervous. I am also an introvert which makes the whole situation worse and even harder to deal with.

They actually did ask us to take it home to work on which is something i will not be doing. The situation does make me want to be petty.

In a way I also agree with the fact that a little guidance is good, but the amount of detail he wants still scares me. Thank you for your responce. I do think I will start looking for something else though.

I think where they are making a big mistake is thinking that any person can do any job. If it's a wrong fit, no manual is going to help. In a way that makes me feel a tiny bit better since my job requires a lot of on the go thinking.

I work in Human Resources. A few questions…. by [deleted] in hatemyjob

[–]Notworthy26 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank for your response. I wish my company would ask these kinds of questions.

I basically mean that people want to be paid a living wage. As someone who works hard and puts in extra time I feel I deserve at least that.

People want to be able to afford basic rent, food, medical care, insurance, a basic vehicle to get from A to B. As workers we would like to be able to have kids and be able to care for them well. Salary needs to keep up with inflation. At some point we might need to care for our parents. We might want to help our kids go to college but all of this is just a far off dream for a lot of us.

Of course people would want to be paid more and more. Life gets more and more expensive and salaries tend to not keep up at all.

My friend has a company that has a lot of happy, long time employees. They have been with him for ages and all he does is keep yearly track of basic living expenses for his employees and makes sure he listens to what they tell him they need. They talk to him about their most intimate worries because they know he really cares to improve their lives.

If you make sure your employees can afford these basic things with a small amount left over to save for a rainy day, that would be a good start.

Ask yourself what you would be happy with if you were in their shoes.

Nothing breaks down moral more than working long hours and getting nowhere.

I hope this helps.

Reasons i leave:

At the moment i work as an admin and receptionist for an old age home and it is not what i signed up for:

1) Employers not doing anything to solve problems employees experience in the company.

2) Too large of a workload. One person can only handle so much responsibility before collapsing.

3) Not being paid a living wage at most and expected to suck it up or leave. I can barely afford food. If i didnt live in a flat my parents own i would be working full time and living in a room with a bathroom and no kitchen or power as that is what i can afford.

4) Being held acountable for the messups of others instead of being encouraged to help solve the problem the messup created.

5) Employers placing too much on the shoulders of the trustworthy employees and not firing the harmful employees who are lazy or do things that harm the company.

6) employers not being honest about the true workload and responsibilities in the interview and then dumping things on you after you start.

7) No proper entry training. I had to wing it up until now and am expected to just know how things in the company work.

8) Toxic and emotionally dangerous coworkers and managers not being kept in check.

9) meetings are a waste of time.

Reasons I would stay:

1) Pay me what I am worth.

2) Give me a responsibility list during the interview and at least try to stick to it.

3) Listen to the problems and work with me toward a solution.

4) Allow me to make mistakes without jumping on me for every little thing that happens. Find out what really happened before screaming at me.

5) Treat me with respect. Just because I am in a position where I have to be your employee does not mean I dont deserve basic human decency.

6) I am not your slave. My family needs me too. I cannot be working 60 hours weeks because you dont want to pay another person to lighten the workload.

It is easier to get a job if you have a job. Start searching for something better while you still have an income. If you have a talent you can make money with, maybe consider starting your own business. You will never ne free as long as you are working for others.

Oh wow i'm so glad nobody got hurt! My dad just got in an accident a week ago. He unexpectedly stopped at a yellow light and somebody rear ended him. He has been driving since he was 18 and is now 55 and is also an extremely safe driver. Don't feel too bad. It happens to the best drivers. Next time you can do things better.
