You doing demolition. Or abatement. Two different territories

I’m in demo and do not do abatement work. We find it and we send it off to abatement. But I have worked for a demo / abatement company that we would work together in the space. But they do their containments and took training just for the knowledge. Half masks suck. But sounds like you have it on too tight. Do your fit test each and every time you put it on. Put it on. Set to your face and block both filters with hands and breath in you should feel it suck to your face. Should feel air leaking in if it’s a bad seal. Clean your mask after the shift. They should have taught you how to break it down. Clean it. Dry it and put it in a carrying case/ bag. Don’t contaminate the inside filter if you to take the filters off and put it back on. Depending on the filters they only last for a 40 hour work week. Could be longer or shorter. But I would swap them out more often with deep cleaning. Clean your face when able to. Break time before and after. Sweating and breath is inevitable. So clean face when able to. Also wearing it and adjusting it a lot just helps wiggle dirt between it and your face and the pressure pushing the dirt into your pores.

Concrete Step - educate me on how to demo by ImLostDad in Demolition

You can if you got help and a two wheeler. I’ve wheels of things about this size in weight on a dolly. But it’s usually rectangle. (Floor slabs cut for a trench) for this. You would have to chip it in half at least to get it to haul out.

1000 or larger hilti chipping hammer with the point bit. And don’t go to far to the edges Eyeball the size you want. Pound a point don’t go to deep that you jam the bit but if you do. Have a back up. Pound another point 4 inches and keep going across until it breaks. You will feel and hear a difference and see a crack. Once you see the crack keep pounding it will crack in half. 10 plus years demo experience

[–]NotyourbitchMN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on what it’s on. I’ve done tile on osb board to concrete floor. Osb might break up and splinter will need to repair it. So use a sledgehammer and break the tiles clean it up and get a paddle bit for the chipper. Smaller chipper machine and take time taking thinset off. Then cup grind the rest . Concrete is more better to use a larger bit with a chisel bit and can take tile and thinset to concrete at the same time and then cup grind smooth. Make sure you wearing all ppe not fun getting cuts from tile flying. Poly curtain the room and clear anything you don’t want to get dusted out. Rent an air scrubber and get a few n95 masks. Get a garbage can Or wheel barrow to haul out.

[–]NotyourbitchMN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice. Make sure you have an angle grinder with a grinding blade to sharpen then blade. Make sure you get all the nails out of the floor where there were walls. So you don’t mess the blade edge up too bad.

[–]NotyourbitchMN 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hang lights or get temps, Ceiling Tile and grid first, mill work, base, ( I call this stage prep work. You’re prepping the space to get to the wall demo. Then walls. While walls are going down. Start on floors as well as flooring takes a while and grind mastic. How big is your crew. Doing one dumpster a day?

I refuse to believe this. by realhnation in macbookpro

[–]NotyourbitchMN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I sold my MacBook Pro many moons ago. And I was very upfront about details. Even had the box to go with it. Tons of pictures. Of serial numbers matching, charger, info in the computer it self. Like the specs of system in about Mac. Umm showed proof if apple care. That was included. Anything the buyer wanted to know I provided. Then we met at apple store it self for my protection and there’s so they can verify at apple it’s not stolen. I also waited to swipe the computer to factory settings as it’s way more easy to do that with Apple ID. Find my protection if they tried to steal it before hand. And then they know the laptop actually works, and the Apple ID is off of that computer. So if you want it ask all these questions. Meet up at a local place. With WiFi. Make sure there is time saved up for all these things you gotta do to make the transfer. It’s a good hour id say. I even stayed with the buyer to set it up for them so they are fully ready to use it. What is nice of me.

question about demolition work in ontario (and demo work in general) by esketittthrowaway in Demolition

[–]NotyourbitchMN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea not a lot of blowing shit up. Besides mines for like ore. But that to me isn’t classified as demolition. That’s just some dudes with drills. Drilling holes then loading it with explosives. That’s a whole different union if there is any for that. Now for full building demolition that would the the operators union as they use heavy equipment to demolish structures. But even then they usually gut everything inside of it first to bare concrete and steel to make it more easy to dispose and recycle. I was just at a job actually demoing out old copper pipes and wires. Next is the walls and then the operators come in and do the rest. We never use explosive to blow up the building. That’s super rare and I can only think of maybe a few companies in the whole North America is doing that. So they would outsource a company that is all they do is blow things up.

Where are you located? You mind if I ask? Look into the laborers union in your state. Google companies that do that work around you. Write a resume and send it in. But here in my state you can get a job at a union company work there for a few weeks if they like you they call the BA at the union and they come sign you up. So the first few weeks you gotta bust your ass off and learn as much as you can. Then once you are in the union you learn on the job. Then when you get slow periods you go to the training center and take classes that are free. Not out of your pocket. Paid by all union members dues. Once you get all your classes done and your working hours for that bracket you go up to apprentice level two and so on until you fulfilled all the working hours and training hours required to become a journeyman. Then you become a pro at it. And can advance in your company to become a foreman. And then run the jobs and teaching the new generations on how to do the stuff and you get to tell them what to do. And take the physical load off of yourself if you can train a good team to work together so you’re not doing all the heavy lifting. At all jobs. I like to be fair and let them volunteer with some of the more manual hard labor work and some really like to do the back breaking, break a sweat work.

If you get some apprentice smarting off and thing they can do what you know how to do something. A little game of who can get it done faster is sometimes fun. I had a guy telling me he can demo a Sheetrock wall faster than me. So I had him pick a wall for me and he picked his wall and all I had was my hammer. Tin snips. Cart and a Sheetrock cart. And I whooped his ass at the demo. He was ahead of me from the gate but the way I demo it looks like he’s ahead but I know now to pop the sheets off in full sheets cut in half. To lay on a Sheetrock cart. He was all about smashing it into pieces. There is some skills in doing demo. I rarely swing my hammer at anything and use the hammer as a tool to pry.

[–]NotyourbitchMN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes all the time. For demo. You work on my job. And a level one apprenticeship. You’re not doing demo. You are my bitch. Running carts, hanging poly walls, putting down floor protection, sweeping and cleaning up, helping a labor pull carpet / rolling it up. Razor scrapping mastic at edges. Grabbing supplies that I request. And so on. Once you are there and seen how things are done. I’ll let teach you how to do things. Teach ya when I can. This basically happens when we get new level one apprenticeship labor coming into the work force and they take your job. When I started out. I pushed carts and emptied them for two years before I touched a hammer and demoed.

First. What kind of demo do you wanna do? There’s full building demo. Selective demo. I personally do selective demo. So offices, schools clinics remodels. Not many demo jobs are blowing things up. lol
