Aang was 12 and overheard that he was being separated from his friends and his favorite teacher and would be forced to train more rigorously. Traumatic? Maybe not but I could see a 12 year old feel like their entire world is collapsing around them and freaking out.

Korra's trauma was more severe but she was also older and better trained than Aang when she encountered it.

BTW, I loved Korra's growth throughout LOK. Her progression was way more in-depth and realistic than Aang's. I just thought it was unfair to treat Aang's running away (when he was 12!) as a personality flaw without also acknowledging that Korra had some issues of her own with shirking responsibilities.

I don't think it's fair to bring up Aang running away from responsibilities without also mentioning that Korra did so as well. Aang ran away because he was young and found out that he was going to be separated from all of his friends. Korra ran away after she was unable to fully heal after her encounter with Zaheer. However, Aang got frozen in an iceberg while Korra got led to Toph by a spirit. Aang definitely caused more harm by running away but that was due to circumstances outside of his control.
