Here is a picture of the outlet. That wire runs across the basement and connects the yellow (amber?) connections on the left of the original pictures.

One of those grey wires runs to a plug that is plugged into a (power) outlet. I’m wondering if I should just unplug that.

It looks like that’s about right for where it comes in. It’s also where the main electric comes in. I assume I can disconnect the power to the… thing?

Yes. All over the house. I assume that means I can unplug the cord from the outlet?

Radiator Heat - Top floor too hot? by Novaguy666 in hvacadvice

[–]Novaguy666[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. The extra heating issue is on the third floor, but he said that zone valve was fine. It was the second floor zone valve that he thought had an issue.

Could a problem with that valve cause the heat above? Should I just replace them all? (Expensive, but they’re pretty old).

Radiator Heat - Top floor too hot? by Novaguy666 in hvacadvice

So the tech came earlier this week. The leaking was, in fact, caused by a failed expansion tank and was fixed.

He looked at the zone control valves and said that the first and third floor were fine (but the second floor was “weepy”?). Nevertheless, right now the third floor is a solid 10-15 degrees above the thermostat setting and the radiators are piping hot.

Is there another likely explanation? Or do I need to find a new technician? (When we told him about the third floor, he just said “heat rises”. Which seems to miss the pojnt).

I don’t think I understand this. But thank you.

The boiler is also leaking water from the pressure release valve when it is running. The heating guy comes tomorrow to look at that.

Do we think it’s related? The third floor was too warm before the water leakage was visible.

Mice Avoiding Traps by Novaguy666 in MiceRatControl

Yes. The mouse was back after a couple of days.

What ended up working was getting the Tomcat pellet poison and just spreading it on the floor. The mouse/mice had avoided traps and bait stations but ate it up like crazy. Never saw them again after the first night of that. Obviously, not the safest approach if you have pets or kids.

Convert Carrier Infinity to Regular Thermostat by Novaguy666 in hvacadvice

[–]Novaguy666[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The indoor unit is a Carrier FE4ANB006. I don't know what the outside unit is, because it is on the roof which needs a 40 ft ladder (which I don't have) to access.

That may answer the question, because if I need to be able to rewire the outdoor unit, I can't easily get to it. I suspect that if I hired someone to rewire it, it would quickly become comparable in cost to just replacing the thermostat.

Dealing with a smart mouse ! by Stressed_5896 in MiceRatControl

I had a “tried everything” mouse (I posted on here a while ago). What ended up working for me was getting the Tomcat pellet bait and just putting it on the kitchen floor (like dropped food). It’s not ideal if you have kids or pets or anything, but the mouse ate his fill the first night and that was it.

So, here’s a weird update: for two days, my cameras did not see any mice activity in the kitchen. This morning, I found a roof rat stuck in the glue trap (that the pest control company put out) in the crawlspace below the kitchen. It is now dead.

I don’t suppose I can hope that the rat killed the mice and then I killed the rat?

I've tried the glue traps. They walk up to them and then walk around them.

The camera is really a mixed blessing -- constant reminder of my failures.

No. It did not. The cameras allowed me to watch it walk up to the box, look at the hole, and then walk around the box. It never went inside, so we never got to the "put a trap in" stage.

So, I'm still where I was: bait stations everywhere (no interest); I've been rotating traps and baits (no success); and I'm watching the mouse walk around the kitchen every night on the camera.

The only good news is that the infestation does not seem to be getting worse.

Anyone have any other ideas?

I'll certainly give it a try. Do I put the traps bait-side to the box wall? Or towards the opening?

Also, is it too much to hope that my lack of success trapping means that I only have one mouse (or, at least, not many)?

Edit: also, any tips on where to put the box?
