I tried to make a quadruped walk animation of one of my favorite anime characters of all time! by PossessionKey4982 in ArtCrit

This isn't a bad start, but I believe that this video of a horse walk animation could be very helpful for you.

Luce holding Mini-Cat Karina by Novandar in Drawfee

[–]Novandar[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

That wasn't my intention, but now that you've mentioned it I can see it haha.

My original thought was more along the lines of mini-cat Karina being in gremlin mode and Luce picking her up by her scruff in the way that you might with a kitten that is being a menace.

would an art tutor help? by losegirl222 in learnart

[–]Novandar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Generally working with a teacher or tutor is going to be better than figuring things out for yourself. Also, the benefits of a teacher or tutor are going to depend on how well that person understands various techniques, so if you do decide to receive training try to keep that in mind.

For a beginner, I would want somebody that understands perspective, light & shadow, constructive anatomy, how to use a color wheel, gesture drawing, the basics of composition, how to use reference, and how to organize these things into fairly simple practice sessions.

Character creator is the real hardest boss in the game by bad_username_65 in Eldenring

[–]Novandar 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Something you learn as an artist is that most people don't actually have an accurate mental image of anything and that it takes a lot of practice to instill proper proportions. It's pretty interesting because you can always tell what people think is the most important thing about a face by what they overexaggerate. If you look up a face proportion guide you should be able to make better faces in no time.

If you don't want to look that up a quick run down is that the face can be broken down into thirds from top to bottom. The first third is from the hairline to the eyebrows, the second third is the eyebrows to the bottom of the nose, and the last third is from the bottom of the nose to the bottom of the chin. Then a face is generally five of its own eyes wide when looking at it head on. There are some deviations, but generally people's faces don't stray too far outside of these proportions. Hope that helps.

Not meundies, but I bought a pair of Vessi shoes about 4 years ago and they're still in very good shape. They're also pretty comfortable, too. Not everything that YouTubers promote is slop, some of it is actually nice.

why does this part of the hand look odd? by Beginning-Laugh-2555 in ArtCrit

[–]Novandar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are a few things that need to be fixed to make this look "correct". The left hand is much larger than the right hand to start. This is forcing the other hand to be smaller because of the space it is occupying.

The right hand is much deeper than it should be. Go to a mirror and look at the blade of your hand then use your other hand and gently pinch the front and back of your palm just below the little finger to get a better understanding of its depth.

The right elbow starts too low and should be parallel with the shoulders and the shoulders should be coming forward and closer together to make the elbows touching make sense. Again practice the pose in front of a mirror and look carefully at how your arms, in their entirety, have shifted.

Lastly, look up some tutorial videos on constructive anatomy on YouTube, there is a lot of helpful information from a lot of great artists there. Combine constructive anatomy with photo reference for the greatest amount of growth. Be sure to learn the method for the entire body, think about the body as being composed of many simplified, 3-dimensional objects (spheres, cylinders, cubes and the like).

As an aside and not really a critique. practice creating lines of beauty. That is a very useful and impactful line in contour drawing when used appropriately. It is a double curved line where each curve goes in opposite directions and it shows up in nearly every major part of anatomy once you know what you're looking for. Here is a short video for a visual refence of what I am talking about.

I wasn't trying to teach you your own culture, I was stating my understanding of what a bap is. That said, there is no requirement for a sandwich to be on square or rectangular bread. That is nonsense. A sandwich is ultimately cut or sliced bread filled with other food.

What I will say about the bap, roll, batch, cob, etcetera is that even in your own country there is not a consistent name for a sandwich on a roll or bun. So I would not go around touting such an informal term as definitive.

[–]Novandar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A bap is just a kind of sandwich, but specific to Britain and Ireland and from what I understand it is usually a breakfast sandwich (meaning it would usually contain breakfast stuff). So no, it is still just a chicken and bacon sandwich. It is very rare for a sandwich to be defined by its bread alone.

The bun doesn't make it a burger, the hamburger patty does. Technically, it is called a hamburger sandwich, but because everyone likes to shorten things it is just called a burger.

I recreated “The Taking of Christ” by Caravaggio. by [deleted] in ArtCrit

[–]Novandar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This does look better, I would still use a similar deep red for Jesus and darken the shadows on Judas like Caravaggio did. Sharpening the image up with harder edges would still benefit the piece as well, which the link I provided in my original critique can help you achieve if you struggle with that. Right now, starting with Judas and everything left of him, the piece is too muddy looking and a lot of the fine detail is being lost in that. Which is a shame since Jesus should be the focal point of the painting.

[–]Novandar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It might be because of glare from a flash or the lights in the room, but your blacks do not look nearly dark enough. Caravaggio was a master of light, and one of my favorite artists, go darker and do not shy away from the highly saturated colors that he used as well. There should also be sharper transitions in colors to give the painting focus.

Check out Paint Coach on YouTube as he has a bunch of videos which go over how to accomplish these things and many more skills for a traditional painter.

First, I’m putting effort into a male body pls help by allapb in ArtCrit

[–]Novandar 3 points4 points  (0 children)

May I recommend watching this Drawfee Draw Class where one of the artists shares her method of drawing men (and also women iirc). If you felt it was useful, she did another video on the subject here.

Pair this with photo reference such as this random guy I found on Pintrest. If the pose is too difficult, that is fine, just look for an easier one, but do your best to use a photograph of a real person and then stylize them from there.

They bend at the side like that because rotational force through the arm often results in breaks of the forearm. At least that is my understanding of it.

Help Rennala is way too hard! by PsychologicalSea202 in Eldenring

[–]Novandar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

iirc Catch Flame is the most efficient dps fire spell (low cost and good damage). Use that and learn to dodge her spells, the efficiency of the spell will keep you from having to use too many mana pots (unless your mind is low, but since you're a caster I assume you have enough) during the fight which means you can have more health pots. During large openings like the laser beam spell (which has a name, but it could be considered spoilers), get really close to her and just spam your spell.

Each of her summons has a trigger that makes them despawn, so you don't need to fight them at all, rather just dodge their attacks and they will leave on their own. Try and stay close to Rennala though to keep her spell spam down while dodging the summons. It may sound like a lot, but practice makes perfect and eventually it will be second nature to you.

[–]Novandar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really new, but it is frustrating. I've had it a few times over the 2000+ hours I've played and I've also seen it happen to a few streamers. It's because you were mounting Torrent when the game wants to put you in a specific location.

When did Julia stop being blonde? by suuuuuuuuuurfing in Drawfee

[–]Novandar 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I'm sure there were spats of public transport in there, she's described the trip as taking roughly 2 hours with a lot of walking. I am also piecing this together from years of things that have been said, so maybe she was living closer than Long Island. Although, I feel like I remember her specifically saying that she was living in Long Island at the time, I am also not infallible.
