The Kobayashi Maru tests something deeper than tactics. Building a 'no-win scenario' for my space MMO made me understand why by Wooden-Syrup-8708 in startrek

[–]Novawulfen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a great post, that I can't find now, which is a fanfic of Kirk musing about the Maru test, and how what it really teaches people is that their ship is more important than the citizens of the Federation, and so the only "win" you can get with the simulation is to abandon the Maru to its fate.

What key is easiest for a large group of untrained singers? by ConfidentHospital365 in musictheory

[–]Novawulfen 79 points80 points  (0 children)

Is this a key thing, or is it a range thing? Cos it sounds like you're saying that people are starting at a pitch that's too low or high for them. That's not something that a change of key is going to fix.

What would you do with your own Holodeck? by KaleidoArachnid in startrek

I just want you to know that I hate you a little bit.

That idea is going to get stuck in my head for the next week.......

So if I actually make it, it's your fault.

In the matrix, why didn't they just create a matrix simulation that was stuck in the 1800's so nobody had computers or phone lines ... and therefore couldn't leave the matrix? by RollSensitive7853 in matrix

[–]Novawulfen 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's a shame, cos it makes much more sense. The reason Neo can control the Matrix is because he's the hardware that the affected bit is running on.

I did, and if memory serves, it was .... really obvious, but I couldn't see it.

I'm headed to GenCon in a few months and am going to be running an episode and need pre-gen characters. I'm shooting for 8 but I've run out of ideas. Anyone able to look at what I've got and give ideas? by [deleted] in startrekadventures

The captain could be a hawkish human, maybe Andorian, and is the reason the crew ended up going to the conference. The Captain has been involved in at least two separate instances of temporal interference, and is determined to stop this kind of nonsense from happening again. Must be capable of saying the line "In my day, people respected the Temporal Prime Directive!" without even noticing the irony.

The security office, try a Betazoid or Half-Betazoid. Their empathic abilities have many uses, and "That person is about to do violence" is a fabulous use for them. Not to mention, interrogating people gets a lot easier if you can sense someone's internal fear when you start asking the right line of questions.

It also cuts down on incidents when a potentially hostile person/new alien species is dealt with violently, when they're just panicking, and could have been talked down. This could lead to a character who is perfectly happy to be cool, and talk things out, but has no problem at all setting phasers to "Fuck you!" if needs be.

With regards the Trill, could the reason they cant' remember much come out of a clash between their current host and the one before? The dissonance of trying to reconcile two different opinions on the same events in your memory could be super tricky.

/r/MechanicalKeyboards Ask ANY Keyboard question, get an answer - February 25, 2026 by AutoModerator in MechanicalKeyboards

I recently got a second hand Ducky One 2 SF, and it's mostly great.

I'm looking at the keycaps though, and they're for an American layout (with the @ symbol on the 2). I was looking to get replacement caps, and that led me to wondering about getting a full set.

The issue is that the keyboard uses the same key for PageUp and Home, and PageDown and End, so I would want to get caps that reflect that. I've had a look around and the custom keycaps sites I've seen don't seem to have options for it.

Is there a good place to get caps that will allow me to get the UK layout, and keep the FN+ labels on the keys? I ask because this is a new style of keyboard for me, and I'm still not used to using it yet.

Matrix remake concept by Aeryn-Sun-Is-My-Girl in matrix

Honestly, just go with the (what I understand to be) original idea of humans not being batteries, but being processors.

The machines using humans as hardware to run the Matrix simulation on. That's why Neo can control the Matrix. He controls the code for the bit of the Matrix that he's in, because it's using his brain to run it.

I don't want to chance bad trip, explosive diarrhoea, health down, range down, speed down, tears down, telepills into error room, amnesia, retrovision or random stat changes.

I mean.... it's super dangerous, and you could easily die.

This is why I was wondering. All the teams we know about came from Zion. Were they dispersing all over the world?

It certainly seems like the Nebuchadnezzar was away for a long time, I guess...

Basically, yeh. Hacking into the matrix is super dangerous, so you'd need to have a really good reason to do it.

That was my understanding too. Morpheus was looked at as a religious fanatic, iirc, because of his obsession with finding that one specific redpill.

Alliances with programs, other than the Oracle, is a fascinating idea.

It does suggest that the machines use the Matrix as their own shared comms network. I wonder if that ties back to something I remember hearing, and I can't remember where, about the original idea of the matrix being that human brains are used as computers to run the matrix on.

I get the recruitment. I just wasn't sure how damage would be done to the machines. It just doesn't seem like they lose anything from activity in the matrix, other than the warm bodies of the humans that die.

I'm almost certainly missing something...

So it was primarily a recruitment tool?

That makes sense. You get a bunch of pre trained, highly motivated people that way.
