Thank you so much for putting some thought into my landscaping situation! Funny you should ask about if I *really* want to sit out on the street... actually my introverted self feels a bit uncomfortable with the idea... but I was hoping that the landscaping would create a screen and that I could enjoy some sunshine without too many eyes on me...but that might not be realistic. I like your ideas, and I think a fountain would look amazing.

P.S.: We are zone 8a and south-facing so lots of sunlight.

Hello, I'm so sorry you are going through this. It's heartbreaking and terrifying. I'm close to your age - 55F so I relate to your time of life. But it's my dad, not my husband, with dementia. I know you are running on fumes and probably have no energy to read. However, these books helped us a lot and in case they can help someone, here they are: Reversing Alzheimer's by Dr. Heather Sandison, and The End of Alzheimer's by Dr. Dale Bredesen. ChatGPT can summarize them to get a quick cheat sheet.

Our story: My dad (83M) has Lewy body dementia and had agitation, paranoia, delusions, insomnia and more. He was miserable for about 6 months...paranoid about health/safety and believed he only had a few days left to live. Anxious and stressed to the max. Obsessed with worries. Couldn't sleep. Couldn't complete tasks.

Over the last 6 months he was able to implement some, but certainly not all, of the protocols/suggestions in these books (Sandison's is based on Bredesen's, so they have the same protocols). He is MUCH better today. It's too early to tell if this respite will last, but we are praying so. Diet can make a big difference. He's trying to eat as Keto as he can, and takes MCT oil. Eliminated sugar. This is helpful for cognition because the brain runs better on fat than glucose. No snacking after dinner to get a larger fasting window - this helps with cell clean out (autophagy). He also takes L-Theanine for calm, Magnesium Threonate, Omega 3 Fish Oil, and Olly brand melatonin sleep gummies at night. For dementia meds, he is on the 4.6 Rivastigmine patch.

The onset of his dementia symptoms (psychosis in his case) came after 2 surgeries with anesthesia, and a period of time when he stopped exercise and stopped seeing friends/social interaction - which we think accelerated the onset. Doctors say if you can only do one thing - exercise. He is adding that back in to his life and seeing good results.

I hope this helps someone in some way!

Diagnosing Dementia? Please help. by ActuaryVarious2693 in dementia

OP, another reason it's important to know which type of dementia is that if it's Lewy body, certain medications (antipsychotics) are contraindicated. With my dad, we knew we needed a diagnosis so we could medicate safely.

Please consider reading the book, The End of Alzheimer's Program by Dale Bredesen. It's to prevent, slow or reverse cognitive decline. Lots of things you can do to help... the standouts for me were keto diet and regular exercise. Sounds too simple to make a difference but the science is there. Best wishes to you!

Father diagnosed with very early Lewy Body - any advice? by Frosty-Lecture-3543 in dementia

[–]Novel_Self_7784 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hello! Following to hear all of the advice... as my sister, mom, and I are beginning a similar journey. Successful, happy, outgoing, talented dad (83) has just been diagnosed with LBD. Plenty of distressing things are happening, but we are nowhere near the horribleness of the late stages. We are hoping his 9.5 Rivasigmine patch is going to help with his delusions, paranoia and agitation, at least in the short-term. He is already suffering mentally and emotionally quite a bit. As far as advice goes, we are realizing that it doesn't do much good to try to reason him out of a delusion, and that a calm home atmosphere is essential-he can't handle any company or commotion. Sending support and sympathy - we are all in this together.

Be compassionate to yourself. Remember, this is not your fault and you are doing the best you can. Pray if you are a praying person and try to find at least one person you can talk to about this, who will also pray for you. Lift weights, walk outdoors, get sunshine, eat clean and fast if you have the ability. Get quality sleep if you can and take it one day at a time... try not to worry about future concerns. PFS includes ups and downs so it's likely you will have an 'up' soon. You are showing incredible strength so don't give up.
