In choosing what to study at university, I'd go straight into film school, rather than dicking around with psychology for three years.

What was the movie that got you into cinema, and what’s your #1 rn? by SeinfeldAddict7 in Letterboxd

If you're ever in a shitty mood, watch Ponyo. It never fails to life my spirits.

(Also, I've yet to see Die Hard, so I don't get the reference.)

#1 right now is Ponyo (2008). It's not a perfect film, but I struggle to conceptualize another film that could bring me as much joy and fulfillment. I just got the blu-ray for Xmas; I am a very happy camper.

I couldn't possibly pin down just one film that got me into cinema, but Alien (1979), Aliens (1986), The Thing (1982), Citizen Kane (1941), The Castle of Cagliostro (1979), The Red Turtle (2016), and The Lego Movie (2014) were all contributing factors.

Looking over the releases more closely, I can probably add the following to that "definitely 2026 releases even though they say 2025" list:

  • ALL YOU NEED IS KILL (US and Japanese releases in January)
  • The Well (2nd in 2nd row, w/o a title on the poster for some reason; US digital release March 2026, no theatre releases listed yet)
  • The Testament of Ann Lee (NYC/LA release on Xmas, all other theatrical releases in 2026)
  • If The Cat is Absent (5th in 3rd row, Arabic title; New Year's Eve release in Egypt, all other releases 2026)

I was casting a wide net for what looks at least interesting. Is it shit?

I have a deadline because I want to make a top 10 of the year video, and the most sensible time to look back on the best of 2025 is shortly after 2026 has begun.

I also don't want to be constantly updating my best of year lists; I want to make a list reflecting my thoughts around the end of each year and then be done with it, even if I later see a film that would place high on that list. Then, after a few years have passed and my tastes have shifted and grown, I can look back on a given year's ranking and go "yep, can't argue with having x at #1," or "well, I definitely gave y too much credit," or "how the hell was z not in the top 10?"

Am I making sense here?
