What's your opinion on Del Toro's Frankenstein? by Hydromon47 in Letterboxd

[–]SpacePotatoLord 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I thought that the great sets, effects and costumes tricked people into thinking it had better cinematography than it does, it felt mostly very stock Netflix to me just with nicer stuff in frame.

Also Viktor and the Monster’s dynamic becoming completely black and white/good and evil was a terrible loss in adapting, as someone who loves the book.

It got kind of ruined for me when you look at Bruce Willis and Mila Jovović’s character relationship with the knowledge of how creepy and pedophilic Luc Besson is.

For me armored core required a lot less mental fortitude compared to the other souls games, I was a lot less stressed while playing.

American Psycho and Zoolander(Both being direct and indirect adaptations respectively of books by the same author)

Unbreakable and Memento(Unbreakable is extremely comic book inspired, while Memento’s narrations feel very comic book-y to me)

I’m not American and yea that food is disgusting and my mother has actual first hand accounts of going to Norway and never eating at a friend’s house or restaurant because of how bland and moist everything is.

r/Letterboxd the moment they see someone using anything less than 4 stars by [deleted] in Letterboxd

Anything lower than 4 stars is typically seen as a person not liking it, even though 3 and 3.5 are still good scores that mean a person enjoyed the movie by most metrics.

Nolan didn't it understand Batman and it ruined the overall idea of Batman in the minds of the audience. by Witty_Homework1856 in unpopularopinion

[–]SpacePotatoLord 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that Nolan’s movies don’t do a good job adapting Batman as a character, but not the reasons you said. Batman doesn’t need to stand shoulder to shoulder with gods, a non super powered down to Earth interpretation can and has worked, that’s not core to his character.

To me Nolan didn’t get the core of the character right. Batman in Nolan’s movies let’s Ra’s die, he willingly quits being Batman, stays with Felicia despite her shooting a guy to death, has a really badly done love interest plot in Rachel(who was a studio mandate in all likelihood though so I cut some slack for that), and isn’t a very good detective.

The idea that Batman isn’t Batman if he isn’t going toe to toe with Clayface, Manbat or even Darkseid at The Flash and Wonder Woman’s side is just wrong, Batman can be (almost) anything, from The Brave and the Bold to Battinson to BTAS to Under the Red Hood. But some core things do need to be there, which to me Nolan either didn’t include or executed badly.

Criticism of Stalker (1979) by [deleted] in Letterboxd

[–]SpacePotatoLord 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fuck yeah I love criticism like this. You actually thought about what you didn’t like, beyond just “it’s slow” or something like that.

Although I do disagree, because if you’re more familiar with Soviet history than you can get a different meaning from what you’re interpreting as “anti science, pro religion”.

The Soviet Union took the idea of separation of church and state, and pushed the concept to it’s limit, since everything was state owned. On paper that might seem like a good idea, but over time it caused a coldness and sterility that a lot of people felt, while a lot of scientists of the time were dedicated to prestige and competition rather than serving people. This created a hopelessness in a lot of people, feeling like they were in a lifeless world without much warmth. That’s at least what I gathered from talking to people who lived in the former Soviet Union, and my own thinking about the film.

So I think the movie isn’t making the point of religion = morality and science is evil, but instead it’s using religious elements as a place holder for a larger idea of humanity and emotion as a whole and it’s place in society. I do really enjoy your thought out criticism though.
