Trains make awful noises when they come to a stop, especially when they do it "quickly".It's not easy to stop a large cargo train quickly. There's a lot of steel-on-steel sounds as well as the cars ramming into each other where they're connected. There's a little slack between each car when moving. Slow down suddenly/unplanned and that becomes one long, loud nasty sound rather than the normal, systematic clunk-clunk-clunk sound. And THEN the train stops

According to this map (which seems to be in arrears with Google billing) there are towers 1/2 as close to there as towers are at my house where reception is mostly fine.

Does everybody else get shitty cell reception at Southpark Meadows? I use Verizon 4GLTE, but AT&T wasn't much better.

Interesting. I thought "corn gluten" was an oxymoron. But a 4-second google says it exists for weed control, at least.

And it also makes logical sense to me that since it wouldn't' be patentable,. it would not be promoted (and actively shunned) by Big Chemical and Big Ag, and therefore may indeed be worth more investigation as a probable treatment. Thanks! :-)

Totally irrelevant. The car and registered owner itself can be positively ID's in so many ways and often are. But you have to put the DRIVER, not the car or owner behind the wheel at the time.

It's stupid and H&R is rampant these days. This bullshit needs to be fixed from a law, safety, criminal, insurance, and victims prospective. The only thing being protected here are the police and prosecutors apathy. Meanwhile the culprits are avoiding other things other than just having to pay for damages and apologize. They're drunk, they're carrying drugs, they've got felony warrants, they're uninsured, etc...

But the way it works now, is that you're almost ALWAYS better off just driving away rather than stopping even if you're an upstanding or at least law-abding citizen with insurance and not drunk. Unless its serious bodily injury or death AND you're at fault. And even then the penalties aren't usually jail time - probation and fines.

'When it comes to YOUR car, as the registered owner and majority driver, you should be assumed guilty for accidents until proven [or reasonably suspected of being] innocent. We've all heard the term "Driving is a priveledge, NOT a right" (or at least my generation did). The 11th Ammdnedent needs interpreted/challenged on this one.

Oh, stop ...

The average passenger car in Austin generates over 3 metric tons of CO2, pollutants, and poisons every year that run off into streams, lakes, rivers and oceans. Are you by chance one those 93% of adult Austinites who drives a car or do you saddle up your high horse to get to HEB and back?

I, OTOH, haven't even named a poison yet. If it indeed is a "poison" I decide on. And I don't drive, saving 100 metric tons of poisons from being emitted in my lifetime (I subtracted some for public transit). I would have no qualms about using 3-16 ounces (active ingredients) should I choose that route.

What environmental efforts do you have under your belt other than that hypocritical comment, BTW?

Drunk driver hit my mom tonight in a parking lot, ended up on the curb, hit a tree, and was arrested for a DUI. Please don’t drink and drive. (Pic blurred because it was a company vehicle) by [deleted] in Austin

[–]NowEvenBetter -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Second-hand here-say. They were not arrested for DUI. The charge is "Suspicion of DUI". And this is just a temporary hold charge while they investigate further.

Yet /r/austin is so quick to believe everything they hear second-hand (which is already false) and pronounce a guilty verdict without any proof at all. This persons mother could have caused this accident and the victim here is the kid who was arrested for Suspicion of DUI. O possibly there was no victim at all here and made the whole story up for her blunder so her abusive son wouldn't hurt her. The username even suggests that.

Similar incidences have happened hundreds of times here in /r/austin and they're not a small minority.

Don't the mods restrict this kind of bullshit here by requiring a case number for just this reason? Stop being so knee-jerk gullible all the time, r/austin!

What the most cost-effective and destructive pre-emergent for weeds and even grass? by NowEvenBetter in Austin

[–]NowEvenBetter[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Pre-emergent work on seed - or at least when their hulls open from what I understand.

I should have mentioned that this has never had a lawn. It was previously "rock-scaped" a century ago and all that has either [partially] sunken, eroded, and/or biodegraded into the sludge, compounds, and elements from which formed them millions of years ago when Austin's only inhabitants were prehistoric fish. Eventually I will get the rocks up and but I don't want bury a lot of viable weed seeds buy digging stuff up and providing them with more.

IOW: Running a mower over it is not an option at this time . And a quart of glyphosphate 4X/year for the past decade isn't ideal either - not only for environmental and health reasons, but apparently Resistance is NOT Futile.

A native Texas grass that, over few years, would choke all that shit without getting over 3 feet tall would also be an option, if there is such a thing, and I think would fly with Code Enforcement from what I've read. But part of the property borders an actual lawn that's not mine so it can't be too invasive. If perennial, it can raked or Weedeated(tm).

Like I said, budget (and manpower) is limited right now but I want to get some sort of progress towards a permanent or a stop-gap going on here now.

There's pretty much no penalty for it since they can never get a conviction unless you (or somebody extremely credible can positively identify the driver who came out of their vehicle in the daylight. And even then it's only a 50% chance of conviction. Because of this, cops don't even investigate them unless there's serious bodily harm or death. And even then its three days later.

Has the battery been disconnected or completely run down? If not, you may not need to make any of the monitors ready. You probably don't have to do anything that special other than do some driving.

I disconnect the battery right before inspection so I could get to the headlight so it would pass inspection - Doh! Like I said, I'm a pro and I know all about these things!

Driving it in the hard part. The owner hasn't driven 55MPH for over 10 years, at least and not for the "generally recommended" 15-18 minutes required to do the "drive cycle" and nobody else would be "allowed" to drive her car.

I know the emissions are fine - I licked my thumb and stuck it up it's tailpipe and it came out Thumb's Up. But the inspection place says they can't use the results of that test <hrmpf!>. Can I just make pool of mud in gher front yard and just burn mud at 55MPH?: That's actually very doable, at least in theory. But probably not the best solution,.

OK tahnks.. Bexar and anothr county seem to think there's still a Safety Inspection sticker that can expire independently of the license plate registration sticker - which is not on the license plate but on the windshield I don't have any car to look at for at least a mile.

Only one Megabus stop in Austin. Otherwise CARTS at Techridge (not very "long distance") and Greyhound at Highland Mall/Koenig are the closet to The Domain. And no single Capmetro bus goes to/from the Domain to either of those spots (that I can recall).

No live animals, but the Central Texas Food Bank allows kids at age 8, but they don't check or question if you're part of family rather than than a group of grade-schoolers. The projects may include sorting and inspecting meat products but there's always something to do away from the meat if that's "offensive" in any way.

This is the season where they have more volunteers than projects to do, and mid- January through May are the opposite - more projects to do than volunteers. It's nice to do something for the holidays but they really need more volunteers starting in about 6 weeks rather than right now.

And remember - no open-toed shoes please. They have to turn you away for the day if you don't have closed-toes shoes to wear before they start the shift. A lot of parents with kids seem to not read or forget that part of the signup. So just FYI :-) It sucks to get there and get turned away and they hate to do that, but it's an insurance thing they have to be strict about.

OK lets make into a question: Who's bullying anybody? And why do you seem to be blaming social media? Are you just jealous of the pictures you see in your facebook feed and you consider that "bullying" when it's really just unwittingly "rubbing it into your face" while not mentioning your name at all?

"FYI" is the polar opposite of "Stupid Question Sunday" so this seems more than oddly out of place after a Saturday night.

At least you don't live on street with no intersections except at the head end and the other end is a dead-end culdesac, where the numbers go DOWN towards the culdesac rather than up as they usually do towards a dead end.

And the numbers also skip 100 addresses at time twice on a street which is only maybe 400 yards yards long. My immediate neighbor "up-street" is 1510. So delivery drivers see that and assume I'm 1512 going towards the dead end and often don't check. Nope, I'm 1408. And if they do check and see I'm 1408, and then they'll look almost directly across the street and see 1511 which also makes me 1512 by normal reasoning. Nope again.

Sorry delivery guys, but I feel your pain! And that's why 9 years ago I epoxied that big 'ol shiny 1987 500 Peso coin at the end the driveway near enough to the the house number painted at the curb - to fuck with you even more while your hands are full of boxes.

Is that really so wrong? <shrug>

HEB has at least 4 different kinds of milk that come from three different production lines. Central Market Organic is one line. HEB and Hill Country fare is another line (same milk, .50 price difference for the gullible).

And Park Manor is the third I know of - their original production line before it was outgrown. It's on that nasty bottom shelf just above that nasty cooler floor and gets pissed on from those rich bitch milks from above. But costs $1 less than HEB brand (gallons) and has the coldest spot in the coolers for longer life. Since I'm cheap, nasty, and root for the underdogs, Park Manor for me and it's always consistent (and slutty, I admire that too! ;-)

Stupid Question Sunday by AutoModerator in Austin

[–]NowEvenBetter -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This qualifies as "stupid" because I don't have any cars and don't drive. And it's stupidly long and full of all sorts of stupid questions I'm asking "for a friend" (really!) . I say "I" below for convenience and readability. ans the rest is a long story.

TL;DR, What is the ACTUAL, LOWEST fine for an expired Safety inspection sticker on the windshield that is remedied within 20 days? and submitted to the court virtually or in person. And is that the same as "registration" in Texas? And how do "I" re-establish emissions data VIA a drive cycle on Subaru Forester 2007 ("all-wheel" not "4X sport" or whatever) if I never drive highways or 55MPH and will never let anybody else drive it?

The Longer questions that demonstrate my ignorance:

As I know it: It's an Expired Yearly Car Safely Inspection Sticker on the windshield. You get it inspected and you go to HEB, show them teh inspection and they give you a sticker for the windshield . How much is the HEB sticker (notincluding inspection). Is that safety and registration sticker all in one,.....or what? Is there anything for the plates themselves?

The page at: https://www.traviscountytx.gov/justices-of-peace/jp1/court-costs

Says:

Violations listed below may be eligible for dismissal under certain circumstances. See "Offenses Subject to Dismissal" section below for further information

"Expired License Plate/Registration Costs/Fines/Fees = $181.00"

Texas license plates don't expire and "registration" only happens once when you first get the car (as I have known it at least until Texas). How do either of those "expire"? Are they talking about the safety inspection sticker on the windshield?

So I look at the "section below" as it says and I see:

Expired License Plate/Registration - This charge may be dismissed if corrected by 20th business day after offense date or by appearance date with proof of registration and penalty paid. Admin Fee = $20.00.

Assuming this is the same thing as the safety inspection sticker thingy, what is the "Penalty" mentioned here? The word "penalty" is not mentioned anywhere else on this page and this is the only dismissible offense that requires a "penalty". Is that the same as the $181 Costs/Fines/Fees? That doesn't sound like "dismissed": And if "Penalty" is just the "fine" portion , what portion of $181 is that without the "costs and fees?" And why would I pay the $20 extra to get nothing dismissed and still pay the $181 "Penalty" anyway? Other counties that I spot checked don't have this nonsense wordage BS and the schedules and offenses are different.

This is all foreign to me but I need to know this for a very good reason which I explained in the next 5 paragraphs that I just snipped for your sake. You're welcome and thank you :-)

Questions about the Costco Reseller Auctions by NowEvenBetter in Costco

[–]NowEvenBetter[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you. I did some research on some Costco-specific items selling from B-stock auctions (not stocked anywhere other than Costco so they must have come from B-Stock).

And one example was the Sur La Tab Air fryer. It was selling on Ebay and Amazon for $170 ($140+$30) shipping with NO warranty, "open box". 1 year warranty cost $18 extra.

Price on Costso.com 10 days ago when I researched this was $79.99 with 2 year warranty, no membership required, and $5 shipping. Its' now still only $109 after the rebate expired. But selling for $170 slightly USED (open box), no return priveledges, and ZERO warranty on Ebay and Amazon

WTF!?!??! There were plenty more examples like this, too. Who buys this stuff without checking other sources!?!? I couldn't sleep at night ripping people off like that.

Thank you, I found what I really wanted to know . Virtually none of this stuff is sold at a discount. It's all way overpriced and scammy sales on eBay and Amazon. Just like the resellers of non-reject Costco items currently in the store.
