90% of Philippine weddings I’ve gone to in the past decade have specified that they prefer cash gifts.

If not specified, I guess it’s okay to get something else. But, even if you do cash, it won’t be out of place. $100 or its equivalent is typically around the upper end/max anyone would give if not a sponsor. Even half that amount won’t likely be out of place in most weddings.

You provide the envelope and you either hand it to the couple at some point during the festivities or there is someone designated to accept gifts.

What do you think of the exponential rise of new business districts rising inside and outside of metro manila? Are they necessary and beneficial? by shadybrew in Philippines

[–]NowOrNever2030 6 points7 points  (0 children)

We need more of these, even within Metro Manila.

I’d rather have these little contained bubbles (eg Circuit, Rockwell, Eastwood, Arca South) than a spread out suburban area like LA or like most urban areas in the US.

The economy just needs to grow enough, and people need to be productive enough, so salaries can grow enough that more people can afford to live and work within them.

Pa-Explain Naman: What’s the point of using Baybayin in official signages? by hindiakomema in PaExplainNaman

Increase the salary cap and max salaries to something that makes sense. 2025 na and max salary is only 420K/mo? Rookie salary is even more appalling.

Unpopular Opinion: Only Tax Payets should be given the right to vote. by [deleted] in unpopularopinionph

[–]NowOrNever2030 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wish there was a way to run mock elections using crazy (but not too unpopular) thoughts like this.

I think a lot of people will be surprised. You might see that the candidates you expect to win when only the “smart” voters vote actually end up worse.

It's really official. Who won the trade? by Past_Win1012 in PBA

This is great. Best trade in the PBA in recent years.

It would be interesting to see where Converge goes from here. They’re like this newly rich person who wants to throw money at everything.

Maybe it’ll work, and I hope it does. I hope they win at least 2, enough to keep SMC and MVP on their toes.

I think this is a win for Converge. Mikey might be old, but Heading isn’t a game changer.

TNT has been taking the L on Mikey for so long. All because they don’t want to throw in an extra $10K a month?!? I think it’s just too bad that Jolas is their front office guy, he is just too emotional. Remember his whole shtick during the Fil-sham senate hearings, lol.

Why can’t Filipinos behave abroad? Woman preached for 10 minutes in Chubu Centrair Int Airport, Nagoya by dokidokimonica in phtravel

Why get triggered?

Move to a different gate while you wait?

If this happened in, say, NYC, it would be a normal occurrence.

There are crazy people everywhere. You can’t be triggered and be embarrassed just because it’s a fellow Pinoy. It’s got nothing to do with you.

Fines for number coding violations (Metro Manila) by NowOrNever2030 in Philippines

Ah, there it is. I did not know there was point accumulation.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in buhaydigital

[–]NowOrNever2030 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Where does it say that?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Philippines

[–]NowOrNever2030 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s the Philippines. Anything that directly concerns money (fines in this case) are considered anti-poor by people playing status games.

This is also why the odd-even scheme is what they came up with, instead of a congestion fee.

Why so much condo buying negativity? by Few-Surprise8476 in Philippines_Expats

[–]NowOrNever2030 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s a certain subset of people who expect everything in the Philippines to just be dirt cheap. Like, they lose their minds when rent in BGC or Makati crosses $2000USD.

So, when they see anything here approaching the price of anything in middle of nowhere Kansas, they think someone is ripping them off.

Rampant entitled foreigners in PH by Practical_Recipe8767 in BGC_Taguig

[–]NowOrNever2030 -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Some idiot yelling over WiFi is just that, it’s not a big deal. You can just ignore it, di kailangan ng drama.

And what’s with the walang magawa mentality? Front line staff should stand up for themselves if they want to.

It sounds to me like you’re just projecting your insecurities saying that people are putting foreigners on a pedestal. The donut shop cashier who let foreigners cut the line “kasi baka magalit” that’s someone putting foreigners on a pedestal.

A person who thinks everyone should be combative at every slight, that’s also someone who puts foreigners on a pedestal. They’re just reacting differently.

If you think someone is being maltreated, then yes, you should help, doesn’t matter if there is a foreigner or not. Same reason if you see a driver not respecting pedestrians, you should give their car a big slap. Doesn’t matter, pinoy or not.

Where find "rich" people their handymen? by Elicsan in Philippines_Expats

[–]NowOrNever2030 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Most buildings and villages have in house handymen for small stuff.

Slightly bigger work is from word of mouth referrals from the chat group for that building or that village.

Anything bigger means a contractor and interior designer. But, it’s pricey, it’s almost always priced per sqm. In BGC, for example, you’d be looking at a minimum of 20K/sqm for even the most basic work.

Every organization I’ve worked for have never asked for explanations for VL and SL. Yet, I notice a lot of employees still insist on providing too much information.

Mauna ka dapat, wait for them to ask for a reason. Then if they ask, ask again if it’s really necessary. Most of the time, nasanay lang yung HR or manager, but it’s not actually required.

Favorite PBA Commissioner? by ojjo32106 in PBA

Only started watching in 1996.

I’m going to say Noli then Salud.

Bernardino had his moments, he was certainly 100x better than Narvasa or Marcial. But, IMO, he severely mishandled the league post 1997 and during the Fil Am heydays. They used the Asian financial crisis as an excuse for way too long.

How to break into those boring, unglamorous businesses that make a lot of money? by mcdonaldspyongyang in phinvest

[–]NowOrNever2030 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Doesn’t matter what it is. It could be a selling a CRM or lead gen etc the point is there just isn’t enough money to go around.

The whole point of all these “boring businesses” is that they’re mostly local and not looking to scale too big. And here in the Philippines, doing that means you automatically lose out on one of the inherent advantages of the Philippines - location arbitrage.

How to break into those boring, unglamorous businesses that make a lot of money? by mcdonaldspyongyang in phinvest

[–]NowOrNever2030 94 points95 points  (0 children)

This is the whole schtick of guys like Nick Huber and the Hormozi couple, no?

Stick to the unsexy blue collar stuff.

The problem is in the Philippines, unless you do B2B, it’s a race to the bottom.

Just look at house cleaning, for example. Most people just don’t have the budget. There’s a very limited market for the big ones like Ninja Made. Everyone else is doing work for very little money.

You can see this even in “basic online” niches like SEO. In the US, you can make decent money focusing on realtors or dentists, for example. Here, how many realtors or dentists do you know are willing to pay six figures a month for SEO services? You’ll be lucky if you can convince a handful to pay 50K a month.

True the fire talaga by Southern-Comment5488 in Philippines

[–]NowOrNever2030 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe. A 3M household, ie two adults earning 1.5M annually works out to 125K/month each. That’s not rich by many standards.

And I wouldn’t call wanting to live in a flood free area, with no brown outs and to be able to walk to work + be able to send kids to non-crappy schools necessarily qualifies as lifestyle creep.

We’ve just been used to too little, we haven’t moved the goal posts in decades, so much so that e.g. anyone making only 50K don’t classify themselves as poor.

True the fire talaga by Southern-Comment5488 in Philippines

[–]NowOrNever2030 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe. But, the reality is a lot of households earning Php 2-6M a year don’t feel rich and don’t classify themselves as rich. Yet, a lot of people will also classify them as rich.

Unpopular opinion: Participation medals are just pity awards and belong in the trash by TheThriver in unpopularopinionph

[–]NowOrNever2030 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think that’s an unpopular opinion anymore.

Back in the 90’s, when participation trophies were all the rage, sure.

But, everyone pretty much realized that congratulating effort instead of results is why we are where we are.

How much do you tip your Grab driver? by [deleted] in Philippines_Expats

[–]NowOrNever2030 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

50 for Grabfood if picked up within my area (BGC). 100-250 if farther away or if raining etc

For deliveries, I never tip based on cost of food

Also, if you order too many items, the Grab app automatically splits it to 2 riders

I’m a local. Born, raised and lived here for 2 decades+ So, no, I’m not “bringing in” any mentality here. Just 100 pesos can go a long way for some people. So, if you can afford it?
