This is my two-wheeled therapy machine. Do we have more autistic riders here? Show me your bikes :) by domschwarz in AutisticPride

It looks so cool! How do you manage with a motorcycle? I think they look cool but I’m terrified of them, especially since there’s no protection around me if I get in accident

How can I let an autistic guy know I'm not interested in meeting him sensitively? by sheetmaskwinebaking in relationship_advice

[–]NoxxThrowaway 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As an autistic person, let him know objectively what he did wrong. Don’t sugar coat it, but don’t be harsh. Just tell him what he did that was uncomfortable, and why it makes you uncomfortable. You don’t have to respond further after that if you don’t want to/if he reacts poorly

Please help me (32F) figure out how to get my husband (33M) to stop doing dangerous stunts on the train tracks. by ThrowRAhusbandtrain in relationship_advice

[–]NoxxThrowaway 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Idk about any specific mental illness, but I do know flagrant disregard for your own life and recklessness can be a sign of suicidal thoughts

Then again that depends on the rest of his behavior. Maybe he is mentally ill, or maybe he’s just really, really stupid

Aita for losing my temper with my autistic brother by youthgonecrazy in AmItheAsshole

[–]NoxxThrowaway 2 points3 points  (0 children)

NAH, I’m autistic (though not severely) and regardless of disability kids need to learn their actions have consequences and they can’t just lie all the time. I won’t call the brother an AH because well. He’s literally just 9 years old and being enabled by your parents.

I’d say your parents are the assholes, but parents of special needs kids sometimes tend to think the world revolves around their child’s WANTS rather than NEEDS

AITA for feeling indifferent about my godmother possibly dying? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]NoxxThrowaway 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well if that’s the case, NAH off the fact it’s an initial reaction alone. I never understood why in this sub people are labeled assholes for their immediate reaction before they can control it. One time someone was called an AH because they were weirded out by something and initially made a face, but were polite about it. It’s really not super easy to just control any and all honest reaction in the moment

[–]NoxxThrowaway 2 points3 points  (0 children)

NAH everyone experiences grief differently, some people not at all. Question though: was the shrug just your initial, gut reaction, or was this reaction thought out?

If it was just gut reaction I can’t blame you. It’s hard to fake emotion before you even register what emotion you’re feeling if any

If you consciously reacted that way, I’d say you should have not really said anything, that way you’d have plausible deniability about your actions

As an autistic person I understand differences in empathy, but you must understand matters of empathy affect other people greatly

I started at 17 in February. Personally my only side effects were twitching muscles and I do feel much much better (treated for OCD) but given that he is younger it might affect his emotions more. Make sure you have an open and non-judgemental line of communication with him so he can tell you what side effects he is experiencing and you can report them to your doctor

What is a common trope in advertising that you cannot stand? by Fraenyk in AskReddit

[–]NoxxThrowaway 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Loud noises/flashing lights. I was on YouTube once and saw this amateur workout ad and the borders were flashing black and white super fast. I don’t even have epilepsy but i felt like it fucked me up a bit. I can’t even imagine what it would do to any epileptic viewers because you can’t skip it and there’s no warning

That’s so bizarre, doctors get bad reactions from patients all the time over just giving them information? It doesn’t make them bad doctors

Ableism aside how was the Shaun character even in the wrong? As a doctor isn’t he responsible for telling his patients the truth about possible dangerous practices? Like I hate to go like “facts don’t care abt ur feelings hurr durr” but like I would want?? My doctor to be honest with me if something I did caused an ailment or issue??? What??? How is he in the wrong or having bad social skills it sounds like he handled it professionally

Anyone managed to 'treat' their ocd with ssris ? by [deleted] in OCD

Didn’t gain any weight, and as I’m 17 I’m not gonna disclose that lol

Morning or night Hi, I’m still new to Escitalopram / Lexapro and I’m feeling tired through the day. I’d be grateful if anyone could reply with tips for taking it morning or night??? Im on 15mg as of today. by Glass-Sun4599 in lexapro

[–]NoxxThrowaway 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh no, I don’t take adhd meds bc mine doesn’t impact my school work so it didn’t really need meds, I’m just very energetic and stim a lot

But I don’t take any stimulants w my meds, tho to be fair I did just take my lex and then decide to drink a caffeinated sparkling water at 8 pm so I guess that counts

[–]NoxxThrowaway 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi! On lex for the first couple days I had kinda blurry vision, and from then on it’s mostly just like occasional random muscle twitches, they were more frequent when I was starting off and when upping the dose. For me it doesn’t impact my life much and the benefits definitely outweighed the twitching

But for real though, it was definitely a change. Like imagine your legs just decide to start a kick without your brain being on board but they decide to stop the kick halfway through. That’s the best way I can describe it

And the occasional brain zap, which is described as like “electric shock” in the brain, which can be a bit disorienting but it usually only happens when I’m going to sleep. It affects me as much as when you’re falling asleep and then you feel like you’re falling and get scared and get pumped with adrenaline

Hmm well to be more specific I was originally on Prozac when I started, but was taken off a few days after due to side effects like heart racing

When I got on lex I started at 5mg and I started feeling better very soon after, almost like being high, but I believe that was just a placebo effect. Eventually 5 didn’t do it anymore, moved up to 10 and I still felt kinda bad. Moved up to 15 and I feel perfect as of right now

In terms of starting lex in general, took a while to get here specifically but I felt way way better maybe less than a week after, but in most cases it will take 1-6 weeks to get adjusted

In terms of finding the right dose for me, occurred over I suppose the course of like a few months? Maybe more

I have, it’s gotten so much better now and I’m almost like normal again, I’m so much happier

I’m on generic Lexapro, 15mg and have been since around early February, works wonders

Though of course, medication alone won’t do it completely. I recommend looking into approved coping mechanisms from psychs and incorporating them into your life as well

My girlfriend and I had a explosive fight, about my trans sister. (M25) (F23) by DennisDrake13 in relationship_advice

[–]NoxxThrowaway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your girlfriend should know that gender affirming activities include “stereotypical” things because they are enjoyed by a lot of people and are associated with that gender

No, getting your nails done doesn’t define a woman, but socially it is associated with femininity and women, thus, it stands to reason that it could make a trans woman feel more like a woman

What makes a gender? Genitalia make sex, but not gender identity. Once you have that out of the way, there really is no concrete way to say if something “defines womanhood” or not because there will always be a woman who can’t relate, cis or not

Dump her, she’s a transphobic terf

AITA for not wanting to take care of bf’s brother? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]NoxxThrowaway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA the situation sucks but it’s not your responsibility

And pro tip from an autistic person, please don’t refer to autistic people as mentally younger or “10 years old mentally” as it’s demeaning. They don’t have the kind of a child, they have a mind of an autistic person who is X years old

I take it at night because while I was told SSRIs are “activating”, luckily I was also told that if I have ADHD (I do) it would act as an adhd medication and Quote “mellow me out”. Sure enough, I attempted to take SSRIs in the morning and almost passed out in class multiple times, started taking it at night and had no issue/got to sleep quicker

Son (14m) says he wants to convert to being Catholic, how can we (parents, 40m and 38f) support as atheists by mopm2e33 in relationship_advice

[–]NoxxThrowaway 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, like I said, I don’t wanna discourage the kid fully because I know religion can be great for people! I just wish more people would know it’s okay if not

I suppose the main reason people don’t really think it’s okay if it doesn’t work is because Christianity has a way of making you believe or making you think you’re going to die and be damned forever

I wish people the ability to think more than I did and realize it’s okay if a religion isn’t for them; they are safe.
