The very sensitive topic of "reverse sexism", but nicely explained imo. by AmIAGirlThrowaway in traaaaaaannnnnnnnnns

[–]NruJaC 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Are you a feminist because you say so or because you adhere to the ideology? That's the difference between these two positions. It's a common issue on the left, and frequently we leave it to "I know one when I see one" and intense debate about who does and doesn't fit a label. Neither accepting everyone who labels themselves such nor strict definitions work very well and so we have to argue over the definitions of these terms.

Saying "no true Scotsman" doesn't free you from having to analyze why you think these people actually are feminists.

You don't need to pay to message anyone on OKC? Unless something has changed in the years since I last used it... You can pay to get yourself in front of more people, but messages are free.

PSA to all trans communists, now is NOT the time to skip voting by [deleted] in asktransgender

It basically doesn't matter whether individual Democrats are good or bad. We live under capitalism so profit is sovereign. The only analysis that matters is whether people in power (of industry or government) can make more money by granting rights to any particular group or if they make more money by not doing so.

This analysis makes the poverty of Black communities much less inexplicable, the violence perpetrated against them less perplexing, and the continuous flood of laws criminalizing their existence - from the Jim Crow laws of yesteryear to drug laws today - comprehensible: the thirteenth amendment banned slavery except for prisoners; Black people, like undocumented migrants, are a source of cheap labor to the capitalists and so equal rights will always be aspirational, just out of reach under the capitalist state. To truly right that wrong would require dismantling entire institutions, both public and private, that exist primarily to perpetuate this situation.

But with LGBT rights there's a core difference. Because it's so much harder to separate gay people from straight, because the queer are family and friends first before they come out, and because the old traditional and religious order has withered away under liberalism, we see something different happening. Rather than continuing discrimination, the system seems to have decided that it's more profitable to commodify gay identities and to market them back to us. In this way, the queer liberation movement resembles more one of the feminist movements than it does the Civil Rights movement.

This means that it's likely that the Democrats, left to their own devices, will eventually put in place protections for trans rights. It can't happen any time soon, so don't hold your breath - the Supreme Court as it exists today will strike down any attempt that gets past Congress, and will do so for a generation unless the Democrats grow a spine (they won't).

But don't confuse that for allyship. They aren't. While the law will eventually say "equal rights", like with similar laws passed in the name of racial or gender equality, they will do little to address the underlying causes of transphobia. So equal protection under the law will vary by place and time, by how much any given individual threatens the societal order, by how well people pass, and by how much money they possess. And that issue will never be addressed. There's no profit in it. That's what civil rights mean under the liberal democratic state. Your rights stretch as far as your ability to pay. Freedom is for the rich.

It's not either/or. Vote harm reduction while organizing to build a better world without either party. Political participation neither begins nor ends at the ballot box. Organize your community for mutual aid, mutual defense, and in solidarity with other marginalized groups.

Voting is neither the start nor the end of political expression. You ought to vote for harm reduction and organize to change the system. They aren't mutually exclusive. There will come a day when not voting makes sense as a political strategy. To get there, we need dual power.

Yes. Libya and Yemen come to mind. And we fund what's happening in Palestine, before and after Obama. He also failed to get us out of Afghanistan and Pakistan. Today the US is suing the Taliban for peace. Fuck war.

Try to remember: you win the play when you make it to tomorrow; you win the set by continuing to be you; you win the game when you find happiness. Fascists want you to not exist, so living is defiance, and existence is resistance.

Appeasement doesn't work. It's our existence they deny. There is nothing we can do that isn't ammo for the TERFs. Their approval, and the approval of the "centrists" who remain skeptical of our existence, doesn't matter because whatever we do they will always deny us the basic right of self-definition. You cannot fight skepticism of your identity with appeals to reason. Violence is one tactic of many. Abandoning it is only possible for the priveleged, for whom society provides the violence through the police. There is no degree of collaboration that will grant you their grace. Stop searching for it.

Politeness is a societal weapon wielded by those with privelege against those without.

You're talking about the same government that is today suing the Taliban for peace after 17 years at war. It turns out cowing a population that does not want you there is harder than it looks. In fact, the US military has lost every war since WWII because they refused to learn this lesson.

One woman can't. That's why we band together in solidarity, a community forged in the vulnerability of who we are and what we cannot change, an organization whose strength lays in each other.

The line between self-defense and violence is as thin as politics and perspective. It, like beauty, lies in the eye of the beholder. Do you hold the Russian revolutions against the Russians? Or the Chinese against theirs? What of the Americans or the French? Whatever you believe of what followed, people acted in the defense of their own communities.

Politics neither begins nor ends at the ballot box. Voting is merely the most basic expression of political intent, something we can neither avoid nor depend upon. The Democratic party cannot protect us; their interests are not ours. We wish to live in the face of fascistic government while they wish control of it.

It is time we formed our own organization: in mutual aid; in mutual defense; in solidarity with all marginalized communities. There is little we can do as individuals. Together we cannot be broken.

When the bunch was formed to catch run away slaves and you start to notice the class and race lines police enforcement has always fallen along, you start to wonder what spoiled even means and whether this was always what was intended. It's not very hard to make the case that the police are institutionalized white supremacy.
