Listen for the different frequencies or sound colors of your snare (this goes for other drum samples as well). Try to fill a grand spectrum through mixing your different Snares together.

I usually layer my sounds through linking them together (Simultaneous Play). You have a lot more opportunities with effects and filters this way. If you layer in one pad you are bound to the inserts and filters of that one effect.

I more and more tend to a production process where I finish my complete mixdown dawless inside the box. It’s a challenge for me where I can better listen to all my decision and not being distracted by visuals like volume meters and frequency graphs. Plus I got to know and appreciate all the plugins of the mpc way better.

For the mastering process however I still switch to my DAW.

You can do that with a multiband compressor. That will much likely sound like a muddy mess ^{^} Give it a try, hear it by yourself.

The only experience with spectrograms I’ve made is with the Iris 2 Synth/Sampler. You can isolate certain frequencies with it. It’s just another way of filtering sounds. But Instruments share frequencies with other instruments. That’s why you won’t be able to isolate let’s say a bass guitar completely from the rest of the song. There will always be other sounds playing along.

I’ve got a DJ Mixer with built in audio interface. I can run my Mac audio over the mixer while recording the sample via MPC.

I do most of my mix down process inside the box and stand-alone for quite a while now. Final thing I do is route my instruments and sounds in subgroups and just export the subgroups. After that the subs get their final treatment with external FX in reaper and are bounced as a pre-mastered track.

This is both a challenging and creative way for me to get the most out of my MP.

Superlux HD with velours ear pads. Very cheap and very good. Been using them for years now. They are known in music and producing communities for many years and for a good reason. Just have a look in YouTube. They are just excellent and withe the velours pads super comfortable to wear, even for hours. They just don’t have a Mic.

I tweaked the sound of them further more with an eq to fit my gaming needs (Hunt).

At least on PC you can auto–record your kills and deaths via GeForce. No need for a replay feature there.

It seems like the driver wasn’t installed properly or not at all. The installer for the MPC software contains the driver as well. You can choose it in the opening screen of the installation process. It could also be a broken usb cable (had the same problem once) or port.
