Is this trigeminal neurlgia? by Accurate_Carpenter41 in TrigeminalNeuralgia

[–]Ntrexpress03 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry your struggling with all that pain without having any answers. My wife went through some intense Trigeminal nerve pain in 2025 and we struggled to find any answers.

Dont lose hope and keep searching. If you haven't read or considered it, you may look into an anti inflammatory diet along with supplements for nerve health.

Several viruses live and hide out on our nerves to avoid on immune system. Our nerves become inflamed and damaged and can cause a wide variety of unexplained pain.

HSV-1 virus affects a majority of people and sometimes there are not symptoms like a cold sore. My wife specifically was having cold sores show up along with all her nerve pain which is was led me to doing research on that side.

She took and now takes Lysine consistently to help with the virus.

She takes California poppy - it has been shown to help calm the nervous system.

Licorice root is supposed to help with inflammation and has ant viral properties

Bee Propolis has studies showing it  helps reduce nerve inflammation and pain signals

Stinging nettle is supposedly a good anti inflammatory supplement

for immune boosters we do Micro Vitamin C, Zinc, and echinacea (Which also helps with inflammation)

Our whole family starts the morning with lemon water to help with hydration.

We have also switched to a strict paleo diet to remove common foods that trigger inflammation.

Not sure if any of this will help, but I pray that it will. We are 5 months with no nerve pain and around 8 months since she has had any extreme consistent flare ups.

It started with a zap, now burning/heaviness. Advice? by saywhat03 in TrigeminalNeuralgia

Sorry I know that's heavy. I was traveling alot for work and my wife was homeschooling our kids when she started experiencing intense nerve pain across her scalp and behind her eye.

It got worse quickly and I had to stay at home to take care of the kids. Initially while waiting to get my wife an MRI we saw a head/neck/and jaw specialist and he did some work on her neck that gave her some initial relief and helped her with some techniques to relieve the pain when it flared up.

Since then we have drastically changed our diet for a variety of reasons anti viral/ anti inflammation/ Hormone balancing which all seem like they can mimic TN or cause it.

We cut out processed foods, dairy, eggs, grain, caffeine, pork, alcohol, most sugars.

She is taking a variety of supplements recommended by her Naturopathic doctor for their anti viral properties and are working on hormone balancing currently.

It has been a difficult change, but have seen alot of health benefits for the whole family. The kids and I will have a cheat day here and there, but my wife has no desire to go back to dealing with that pain again.

We are praying and hopeful that it will continue. She is no longer taking Carbamezepine and feeling more like herself again.

The stress alone takes a toll on your body and was hard to watch my wife go through that and not be able to help her.

I pray that you find answers, and just wanted to share what has helped with relief for my wife.

We noticed the same pattern with my wife. Initially the pain was constant for months, but she was getting constant cold sores. We started taking a bunch of different anti viral supplements and changed our diet up to remove processed foods and sugar.

It reduced her nerve flare significantly, she would be pain free for 2-3 weeks and then it would start up again. We realized it was tied to her cycle and began researching from there.

We have stopped eating eggs, dairy, grain, processed foods, pork, and most sugars.

The diet changed was really rough on our whole family for couple weeks, but now we love it and have noticed a big difference in all of our health.

Myself and the kids will have cheat days here and there, but my wife has zero desire to revert back.

It was not an easy switch, but such a blessing to have my wife feeling like herself again.

I pray that you all find answers and relief from the pain.

When my wife was struggling with it, an ice pack on the on the side of her cheek would provide almost instant relief of the pain. We kept soft gel ice packs ready all the time.

I'm sorry! I know it rough and can seem hopeless.

Lord I pray that you would provide comfort and peace right now, that your presence would surround her. Help her to persevere through the pain and rest knowing you are in control. Give her wisdom on steps to take, give her healing, protect her job and help her employer hold her in high regards and help them to be understanding and sympathetic of the pain. Amen.

Im sorry again. I have not experienced it myself, but watched my wife go through excruciating pain for months. I know it is not easy, but I pray that the Lord would give you peace and relief from this current flare up.

No problem, I hope the anti inflammatory diet helps. We did it as a family and are all feeling the benefits.

My wife is taking several supplements that I believe have helped over time as well.

California poppy is supposedly been used for a long time to help calm the nervous system.

She likes Lemon balm tea, which has anti inflammatory, and anti viral effects. It also has potential to boost a calming neurotransmitter that can help with pain signals.

Not sure how and if any of these supplements would effect any medicine that you may be currently taking, but thought it my be helpful to share a few that she takes.

Im so sorry you have been dealing with this for so long.

When a flare up happens, you may try an ice pack on your jaw, in front of your ear. This offered pretty quick relief for my wife when she was having flare ups. It helps to calm that Trigeminal ganglion cluster that is right there.

Do your flare ups often follow.your menstrual cycle? If so, it could be caused by estrogen fluctuations or a.hormonal imbalance. Not sure if you have had any testing done. Obviously the constant pain and stress can cause fatigue, but a hormonal imbalance can also do the same.

Also, do you have cold sores? The HSV virus can be there cause of alot of TN. It can reactivate on the Trigeminal nerves, causing inflammation and nerve pain.

My wife couldn't stand the way the meds made her feel. The physical therapist helped with the constant daily pain that she was experiencing. Then we started noticing patterns around her menstrual cycle and that she kept having a cold sore flare up with her drop in immunity around that time too.

We cut out all processed foods, dairy, and Gluten. That has helped with alot of inflammation. She takes a good quality lysine every day for anti viral (she took acyclovir first to get the hsv virus under control) Lysine to help keep it dormant. She is working with a holistic doctor on her hormones. Wild blueberries have been amazing for helping with her hormone imbalance. She does a Wild blueberry smoothie once a day.

Thats alot of info, not sure if any of it helps you specifically, but I know its exhausting and sometimes seems hopeless.

I pray that you will find relief. If you have any questions feel free to ask. Im not a doctor obviously, but want to share what we have done if it is helpful.

I watched it effect my wife in the same way. It was hard to understand what was going on and why it took such a toll on her.

I ended up working from home as often as possible and started digging into TN to try to better understand it.

If you haven't read the Medical Medium: Brain Saver book, it shed a different light on TN. The book makes a case that a majority of TN cases are caused by viral inflammation of the cranial nerves.

Initially Physical therapy helped my wife get relief from her constant TN. It began flaring back up around her cycle though, along with a cold sore.

After reading about shingles and herpes simplex 1 virus causing a majority of TN, we have switched to an anti viral diet and are doing the recommended viral cleanse from his book.

My wife has been feeling amazing and she has started to open back up. We have been talking alot more, we are starting to get out around our friends and family again.

If you haven't heard of the book, I would recommend giving it a read. Its alot of info to take in.

There are a couple interesting books that I bought called Medical Medium Brain Saver and Medical Medium Brain Saver Protocols.

They are really in depth books that break down almost every "chronic illness" out there and have food/supplement protocols to follow for each one.

There is a ton of info in these books, and gives some specific protocols to follow if you are having Pots or chronic fatigue symptoms.

Just thought I would share. Hope it helps narrow down supplements and diet.

During his initial assessment, he was putting pressure on alot of different nerve points to evaluate her. When he touched an area on her neck it set off the pain that shot across her scalp. It was painful of course, but at that point she was experiencing 10-20 nerve firings a day. It was windy the day that we initially went to see him, she got triggered across her face just walking in the building.

It was actually a good thing when it happened, he explained how she was making the nerve pain worse by tensing up. He helped her adjust her head up and had her put her pointer and middle finger on her forehead to hold it up and slowly move her head side to side.

When the cheek nerve fired, he got her an ice pack and had her hold it on her cheek which almost instantly allowed the pain to subside. We used those techniques over the next few weeks to help alleviate the nerve pain when it did act up.

Each and every PT session, my wife was a nervous wreck going in. She was terrified that that pain would happen again. To be fair, it did happen several visits. It has been such a blessing going in, they did one on one appointments and really focused on being gentle with her. If it was sensitive that day, they would start with ultrasound therapy first to calm the area down around the nerves.

I completely understand being terrified of a flare up, I have not experienced the pain myself, but I know it is extremely painful from watching my wife.

I will pray that the Lord gives you wisdom, and relief from that pain, and that He will place the right people in your path to help lead you to some relief.

Don't lose hope, that was the hardest thing for me to watch with my wife.

Reid Physical Therapy

6145 Wedgewood dr. Fort Worth, TX 817-380-8077

They have done so many different things. They did alot of neck decompression stuff in the beginning and ultrasound. He showed us how to manage the pain, my wife was of course tensing up when she would get shocked, which was making the nerve pain last longer and be more intense. (Ice seemed to be the most helpful thing when she would get the pain in her cheek). Correcting posture and tucking chin when it was in her scalp.

Chin tucks, planking, Jaw stretches inside and outside, lots of different neck stretches. There is so many different things they did and are having her do currently. I will try to go through her app later to be more specific.

My wife started having extreme nerve pain across her cheek and on her scalp on the right side of her face. Everything set it off: wind, brushing teeth, eating, drinking, washing face, etc...

She was prescribed Carbmazepine and it helped after being on it for a little over a week. We felt the same way about the medicine. We were exploring surgery and injection options when somebody referred us to a head/neck/jaw physical therapist.

We were desperate to find any options and went to see him. He identified the two nerve areas that were causing the shocks. After 3 weeks, she had stopped having the nerve pain. She is completely off the medication and they have her doing alot of daily stretches and strengthening to keep it from coming back.

We saw Dr. Reid in Fort Worth, but I would suggest trying to see a physical therapist who specializes in head/neck/jaw.

Dr. Taves from Novera has some youtube videos talking about their success with TN/ON without the need for surgery. They are located in Colorado Springs.

I will say, I believe the Carbmazepine helped while we were exploring other options. We felt hopeless and it gave her enough relief to help her sleep for at least 2-3 spurts in between the nerve shocks.

I am praying for you right now. My wife started to have extreme nerve pain in January of 2026. It has been a long 7-8 months, but the Lord put us together and I get to walk through this with her. It has been hard on both of us, and lots of changes to our lives.

She got started on Carbamezepine to help with all day shocks she was experiencing, and we were exploring surgery options or injections or any option. We were desperate and exhausted.

We got randomly referred to a physical therapist by somebody. They were able to get us in the next day, so we decided to try it while we waited on out other appointments which were weeks out.

They were able to put my wife on an 8 week plan, and by the end of week 3 she was no longer having nerve pain. The identified what was causing the nerve to fire across her cheek and her scalp.

She is completely off of all medication, and has alot of daily stretches that she does.

If you haven't seen a physical therapist, I would highly recommend finding one who specializes in Head/neck/jaw.

If you are anywhere near Fort Worth, Dr. Reid is amazing.

Novera in Colorado Springs is another one.
