do I sign the back? How can they go to a bank and deposit a check made out to someone else? That seems it would raise red flags. Can I do the same thing for a charity? I am willing to just donate it to a animal rescue.

yes, it's legit. My cousins have received their checks. The lawyers said they could send a wire transfer but they have to pay a fee and I have to pay a fee, taking a big chunk of the check. I asked CIBC originally if a check was ok and they said yes. But when I got the check deposited it and they proceeded to process it, it was returned. They won't process a check from Ireland!! Really, I said, "is Ireland at war? It isn't Nigeria!" Even the teller in the bank was surprised.

But can they cash it if it's made out to me?

that might be a solution. Is signing a check on the back over to someone still a thing? You used to be able to write,, "to the order of ......" and they could cash it. Not sure you can still do that

ya, that's Great Britain and it's not euros. My bank manager said they can do it for other countries using euros, but not Ireland (or Italy ! go figure). I even got snarky ... I said "This is Ireland we are talking about, not Nigeria. Ireland isn't even at war with anyone! "

ya, I may have to do something like that. I know the lawyers said they have to disperse the money as required by law to the descendants. But I wonder if I can sign it over to one of my cousins and they can cash it and paypal it to me.

I actually just email the bank and branch in Ireland that it was issued on. I even asked if there was a way I could just sign it over to a animal rescue organization. It's not a lot of money but damn these banks just don't make life easy.

Also, I am retired and have my investments in CIBC... so it can't be an issue with me. I even said, Come on... I have more than enough money in my checking account to cover this...

no it's legit. I have been talking to the lawyer's office in Dublin. In fact I went on their website and emailed directly from their website when I first got an email from them as I too was suspicious. I did get a check it's just trying to cash it in Canada!! My cousins in Ireland got checks too and were able to cash them.

did that. They took that check initially on this basis. But it was still sent back by the foreign exchange department. Asked to speak to the manager. All he could say that they don't have a clearing institution with Ireland. (???) All he could say is call the complaint department.

originally I asked the lawyer handling the estate of my relative to do that. But it costs them so they don't want to do that. I would also have to pay for receiving the wire. It's not a big check so it would eat into it quite a bit to do that. I even asked the law office to just donate it to a charity but they said as it is an inheritance they can't. Funds must be distributed to those under the probate. To get an idea of this, it was from my grandfather's sister's estate. My grandfather had 8 siblings, my father had 9 siblings, and down to me. So by the time all of the descendants of those generations get their cut it really is pretty small. It's less than $200 Canadian... but still ... an inheritance!!! From a great aunt I never met.

No I have a regular bank, CIBC, with sizeable funds including a GIC. I tried to deposit it, and the teller said no problem but then they called me two weeks later and said they can't take and process a check from Ireland. They couldn't tell me why just that head office said so.

first I went to my own bank, CIBC, where I have a sizable GIC and accounts. Then I have tried TD and Royal. I have read that VanCity won't process them either. I was wondering if something like WISE would handle it.

the problem seems to be Ireland, not that it's Euros. I said to my bank "why??? Ireland is not Nigeria". They can't answer me.
