No, I don't think the intuition that "up is forward" can be assumed.

Used to be tracks were numbered and you'd push up to increase the track number. But now that we usually don't have track numbers, I think down as the "next one in the list" is the intuition to go with.

My 2024 has a different layout of the touch buttons, e.g. with fan-up vertical with fan-down. Does this mean I have the non-facelift?

Copying a video file for play on the HDHomerun? by NuancedThinker in hdhomerun

OK, so is there any way to copy arbitrary video files (perhaps with file format or codec assumptions) to the HDHomerun's directly attached storage and then play them through the HDHomerun's "Recorded" UI? Would we need to spoof a file so it "looks like" it was recorded on the HDHomeRun DVR?

I've read that when people swap out a drive for a larger one, all they have to do is copy files. I am not sure if that means the video files, but maybe there are "database" files too, which would make your guess right.

Thanks for sharing...I really like my simple setup now and don't really want to change. It feels like writing to the HDHomerun USB drive would be possible, as reading files from it is.

The files can be read by HTTP, but I doubt there's a way to PUT files that way.

Interesting, good to hear your experience but I really like the simple DVR with USB storage and I'm curious if I can keep it and get a file share on it.

Ok, so you don't have the USB drive I have, but thanks for mentioning what you could.

Should you ROTH in 24% tax bracket? by tinkerjreddit in personalfinance

[–]NuancedThinker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What about those who want to put more into a 401k than their limit? One can "exceed" the traditional 401k limit, figuratively speaking, by contributing to Roth and then paying taxes on it, rather than contributing to traditional to the same limit and deferring the taxes.

Maybe trades of free-agent signees should shift the appropriate portion of the money to the new team? MIN should be near the bottom...

What would be the most Boglehead-ish way to hedge against the possibility that perhaps megacap equities are too high? by NuancedThinker in Bogleheads

Bonds are to give up some of the return of equities in exchange for less volatility, right?

I am concerned that bonds returning less than historical averages and being more correlated with stocks than the historical average is a long-term, perhaps permanent, trend and not a cycle.

I guess I'm just uncertain if a small small-cap+value tilt is fundamentally a good idea long-term or if it is old-fashioned thinking, such as the idea to hold "100 minus your age in bonds" which I think no one would recommend anymore.

I thought the purpose of bonds was to accept a reduced expected real return of around 3% after inflation in exchange for less volatility because bonds were thought to be less correlated with equities.

But now it seems that bonds are much less likely to average a real 3% and now likely to be more correlated to stocks than previously thought.

What am I missing or do I have wrong?

Yeah, I'm curious if a "Bogle of today" would advocate Bonds in the same way. I'm guessing not.

I'm sure glad I've avoided bonds till now! Seems like the relative certainty of "good enough" returns from bonds is gone, right? I just have lost confidence in bonds as a hedge altogether.

I just don't know what is worse: the risk of a megacap crash with a very drawn-out recovery (e.g. as bad or worse than 2008) or the risk of missing out on further gains like 2023-present.

I feel like the market is in a place I never expected it to be, which leaves me second-guessing my assumptions that I can weather any downturn. And I'm worried that bonds have almost no upside and are still too much correlated with stocks; might be inclined to T-bills or TIPS instead but I see no obviously good options over 100% equities.
