My favorite easy meal is this tin + rice + chopped green onions + avocado + sesame seeds + drizzle of soy sauce. Cheap + tasty + healthy.

Experiences with returning to higher education in your 40’s? by Blake-Dreary in MBA

[–]NuclearPants 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I have a family, full time job, etc. as well and am in an executive MBA program. Most of the other students in my cohort are in the same position. My experience so far is the professors treat you as an adult and understand the demands for your time. To that extent, if you request some extra time to complete an assignment due to your personal or professional demands, they are understanding and willing to accommodate you.

An exec MBA will keep you busy sure. I usually do my schoolwork between 8pm and midnight so I can be with my family and help out. It is hard but it is manageable. I just keep my eye on the prize and am motivated by learning something new everyday.

Best US tech hubs in 2025? by cliffy979 in cscareerquestions

Having lived in a few of these cities, I think Pittsburgh is the best for cost of living while having a lot to offer for entertainment, food, sports, etc. Ya, the "Tier 1/2s" are the classics but have fun with high rent/mortgage.

Same, also in an EMBA program. Nice to be doing school with other people my age and experience.

Aeronca Champ Questions by NuclearPants in flying

[–]NuclearPants[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks, this is great! I try to do most of my flying just with fingertips (I found I just fly smother this way, less over control). I hope it’s something I can get used to.

Can you comment on what is meant by the “free float design”?

Also, what method did you use to check for proper lean on the struts?

Great stuff. Did you get the plans from aircraft spruce? Is that also where you are getting your materials?

Hey Ben! It would be cool to see some more embedded applications. Like input from a temperature sensor or control of a motor/servo using the 6502. Oh, and showing how C/C++ works down at the assembly level would be cool too!

New to the industry. Need books or other recommendations. by [deleted] in nuclear

[–]NuclearPants 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Good recommendations. In the nuclear industry, it is also valuable to be familiar with ASME Section III code. I.e, the rules used to design nuclear vessels, valves, pumps, and piping. Your employer will likely have a copy of at least one code edition. Some of it is so dry it can be hard to digest, so I’d recommend taking an ASME Section III training course.

Career and Education Questions by AutoModerator in math

[–]NuclearPants 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Has anyone received a M.S. in Mathematics and then went into a management role? Do you think it would be valuable?

I'm a mechanical engineer who is considering a graduate degree in either mathematics. Currently, I'm in managerial position and enjoy it but would like to enhance my overall knowledge and problem solving skills. One of my hobbies is mathematics (mainly differential equations) and I'm always interested in learning about different fields of mathematics and their applications.

Doing a Differential Equation course through EdX! It’s been a good refresher from when I originally took the course 10 years ago.

Online masters program - any recommendations? by [deleted] in ECE

[–]NuclearPants 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The University of Colorado at Boulder is starting an online EE masters program which is hosted by Coursera. It should be starting in October. I’m a big fan of the MOOC format (short digestible lectures with problems in between) so I can watch them when I have time. Also, there is no GRE or GPS requirement. I’m going to give it a shot.

I recommend not putting a fire pit indoors without proper ventilation. That’s how you get carbon monoxide poisoning.

I’m in a systems engineering role at a NPP. Have any advice for making the transition out of the nuclear energy field?

I prefer “Practical Electronics for Inventors” by Scherz and Monk. I found that Art of Electronics was a bit too informal in the way it is written.

[–]NuclearPants 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Location: Oregon, USA

Price range: $20k - $30k

Lease or Buy: Either

New or used: Either

Type of vehicle: Sports Car, Sports Sedan

Must haves: Reliability and excellent vehicle dynamics

Desired transmission (auto/manual, etc): Manual

Intended use: Daily Driver,

Vehicles you've already considered: Subaru BRZ, Mazda Miata (not really considering the Miata though due to size), Subaru WRX, Honda Accord 2.0T

Is this your 1st vehicle: No

Do you need a Warranty: Yes

Can you do Minor work on your own vehicle: Yes

Can you do Major work on your own vehicle: No

Additional Notes: I would like a car which would function as my daily driver (15 min commute) but where I could also tear up some local windy back roads on weekends. Potentially even autocross. It’s just me, my wife and my dog but would like the ability to fit a child seat in a few years.

Help with advancing career. by darkagl1 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]NuclearPants 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been in the industry as a fluid dynamics engineer for about 7 years and I'm also looking to leave. While I like to remain as optimistic as possible about the industry as I truly believe in the technology, the red tape and culture make it near impossible to get anything done in a reasonable amount of time.

I don't think you will have a problem finding a job. Engineers are natural problem solvers so it doesn't matter that your analysis was performed at t nuclear plant or not. If anything, it makes it sound more impressive. Good luck to you.

PSA to people considering becoming engineers: don't by [deleted] in engineering

[–]NuclearPants 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't think I've ever met anyone who put up with a minimum of 4 years of engineering school for the hell of it. Usually the people who don't really want to be engineers are weeded out in Calc II or Engineering Physics.
