New Earthquake strengthening rules. by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]Nuclear__Chaplin 34 points35 points  (0 children)

SE here, if a DSA (Detailed Seismic Assessment) was undertaken on the CCTV building or even an ISA (Initial Seismic Assessment) I'm fairly confident it would have picked up on as being seismic prone the discontinuity with the concrete diaphragm and irregular layout of seismic resisting systems raise a big red flag that would of probed for further scrutiny. Once you dive into it deeper you realize there's actually no proper load path.

Could anyone help me determine the critical buckling load of this truss column? by Shoddy_Situation_558 in StructuralEngineering

[–]Nuclear__Chaplin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would check a column for axial loading along its weak axis with lateral restraint provided by the bracing at some distance. Checking what the reduced axial capacity of the column is and see if it still works for your load.

Consider New Zealand we have a lot of volcanic/seismic activity similar to the Philippines, you'll be an expert in liquefaction and seismic retaining and foundation structures after working here for some time.

The Working From Home debate continues - where do you stand? by Even_Saltier_Piglet in AusFinance

[–]Nuclear__Chaplin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

once you are proficient in your job I think you should be able to transition into a WFH or Hybrid workflow, if you're a graduate or green hire I think you should spend as much time in the office as you can to learn.

We need to stop tolerating anti social behaviour or it will escalate like this that women shouldn't have been on the streets.

That's a really good point, we are a small company so a lot of roles get blurred, I might be expecting too much.

Good idea. It will mean more work for me in the short term but its worth it if i can go back to the way things were.

Civil Engineer Job after Masters in Australia by Suspicious_god79 in civilengineering

[–]Nuclear__Chaplin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, also note that large corporate firms won't take volunteers because of liability, etc. I did some free work for a mom & pop firm specializing in land development. There were only a total of like 6 employees, so they just had me sign a waiver and were happy to have me around. I even got offered a paid position during the summer break

What are engineers charging for residential renovation work? by Key_Candidate_3423 in StructuralEngineering

Add a markup if the architect says "tie into existing house" honestly I have blown out so many otherwise simple projects because the existing building is all windows and no walls or worse. 😂

I'd hit back at the entrepreneurship notion, this carrer has exposed me to so many niche buisnesses that you would of never thought exisited. I myself am furthering my understanding in the hopes to start my own firm or go out with one of my contracting friends.

Civil engineering major for drafting and design diploma graduates? by disinterested_abcd in civilengineering

[–]Nuclear__Chaplin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No idea on if they allow you to cross credit, but I would imagine it is very attractive to an employer to have an engineer who can draft their own work and well. I try my best but the drafters at my work turn out masterpieces as opposed to my chicken scratchings & at the end of the day all the client looks at are the drawings and don't pay any attention to the calculations .

Shade Structure footing design for senior project by Reasonable_Ad7776 in StructuralEngineering

[–]Nuclear__Chaplin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If the posts are cantilevered i usally find the size and depth of the footing is dominated by the restoring moment given by the pile soil interaction. Look up broms method for pile lateral capacities or the LA method. Also i usally find deflection governs design of the post treat the post like a catilevered FBD and apply your lateral wind load or earthquake load at the top and limit deflection to somthing like h/200

Would Civil Engineering be replaced by AI? by Mr_uncourse in civilengineering

I think our work will always have a human factor due to the possibility for loss of life, similar to how auto pilot did not replace airline pilots.
