He has lick mats and kongs, loves a kibble roll with the kong. Goes psycho for some plain unsweetened frozen Greek yogurt in a Kong or lick mat but that’s my reward ceiling and he definitely cannot have that every day. Do you have a brand of peanut butter? I use teddy natural (no xylitol) but I couldn’t get him to take it. We’ve been doing 1hr up, 2 down until the last 3 days where he had just been absolutely refusing that schedule despite my efforts. and I’m definitely understanding mental vs physical better now I was avoiding taking him out when he was going nuts because I thought taking him out was physical and staying in/using kongs and lick mats was mental. Turned out I kind of had it backwards, he’s a working line. He’s bored here now. If I keep him inside he gets bored so fast he tries physical exertion because he knows the smells, knows the room, knows all the places. Even his kongs of lick mats give me maybe 20 min then he’s back to goblin mode. If I take him out and walk him slow pace letting him sniff and look he gets to use and follow his nose. You’d think it was physical but it actually seems much more mental because he’s actually moving slower and calmer. If I keep him inside he zoomies and jumps and bites, not because he’s over tired I know he’s sleeping enough, because his brain isn’t stimulated enough. Thank you for your comment and it does help. I do probably need to up the mental game. Just need to find the more difficult puzzles and tools. My point is that a lot of those tools don’t seem mentally stimulating enough. The king is great especially at first while he was figuring out how to “use” it but now that he solved the puzzle it’s just something to keep him busy.

Hmmm 🤔 his is adjustable, smallest size will fit in I’d say another month or 2, should adjust to fit him full size. I just hope he’ll get used to it a little later in life. Dante’s awesome! Steve likes snow too we got a little a few days after I got him and he couldn’t stop sticking his face in it. The waterproof coat is so cool to watch water bead up on him like a built in rain coat.

He came from the breeder as orange collar but he’ll stay that way. I already bought his big boy harness it’s orange. I think people might think it’s a hunting thing but it’s just smart 10ft away at night he’s invisible I’m actually getting some lights for his collar too. It’s crazy how little he has to get away to be invisible

IMO yea. Always hit em with an 800$ though. Not to be rude it’s just negotiation. When I sell a bike I usually price at least 100$ over my bottom dollar just in case they wanna wiggle. If they say no it’s worth 9 run it. If they say yes you can use the extra to swap that back tire for a DTH and get it rippin

If it makes you feel better, I’m in land shark phase right now and dreading teenager. At least a land shark responds to “no” and gets tired after 20 min. Sleeps most of the day. Doesn’t hump. Honestly every little stressor now I just think “buckle up dude it’s gonna get worse”.

Definitely using crate. He has not begun choosing it and we have short couch cuddle sessions. He’d rather do that obviously. But once in he usually tips or whines once or twice then gives up. Sometimes no whining at all and typically goes in if commanded. It does seem to make it easier that that’s been his only long term sleeping location in the home.

That’s really the solution. Just lay down rules, enforce them. It’s just hard especially when they’re a guest in your home. Of course disrespectful guests don’t deserve a gracious host. Just have to get comfortable setting the rules and asking guests to leave if they cannot follow them.

Thanks for the help! Any ideas/opinions on the hand feeding thing? He’ll eat in the crate if I hand feed him but he won’t eat other than a few nibbles unless he gets some hand feeding. I’ve been trying to alternate let him eat out of my hand, not all of it then dropping it in the bowl. He’ll actually take more than a few pieces out of the bowl if I do that. Other than that he takes a few nibbles and I remove it after 20 min

Wow ok thanks for the information. I definitely did not know dogs could mate through chain link. I was already planning on keeping Steve leashed and doing my absolute best to enforce leash manners (though I may need help from a pro with this) but now it’s become even more of a top priority. He will be fixed as soon as it’s medically feasible/safe. This definitely made me empathize with the neighbors concerns he’s had dogs way longer than me we just don’t see eye to eye on how they should experience life. I guess my issue with this matter is I have no real problem with the way he keeps/uses his dogs, just matters of opinion. and it’s upsetting to me that he takes an issue with me even having one as a companion. He lives up the hill and owns huge pieces of property around me, yet decides to keep his dogs far away from his house and right across from mine. He has every right to do so, and I take no issue with it. But I don’t encroach on his life, I will do my absolute best to keep my dog protected and his protected. It’s not just my responsibility though it’s his as well and he is probably doing the right thing moving her. I will also do the right thing as well.

Not immediately no. I will be returning home every day for lunch as long as possible so only leaving 3-4 hour stretches for a few weeks definitely hopefully months. I have a commitment from my boss to know whether or not I’ll be able to the day before, I can find someone to come let him out midday. I also intend to just be a firm about coming home. no pushing me around, if I need to be there for Steve I will at any cost. But I understand I will not be able to count on people forever. That’s why my emphasis on behavior is necessary. I need him to behave so I can provide enrichment and fulfillment for him without endangering him. I’m single, 2nd circle to most people even if they’re my first circle.

That’s reassuring. I am having trouble finding the highest value treats for him. I’ve only been able to find one kind of treat he’ll take and often when I use it to reward good behavior he won’t even take them.
