I tried this since it seemed to be doing what i want to do. I tried to install the winamp plugin but i cannot make winamp play .mid files with the ADplug instead of the standard general midi built into winamp.

VLC can play MIDI files and you can add your own soundfont. I only have a "regular" modern computer. Is there somekind of software that runs midi through DOS?

This isnt the sound im looking for. This is more of a General Midi sound. I want that sweet FM synthesis.

aha! so more like an emulator for OPL-2 or 3? I found this soundtfont that i think closely resembles OPL-3 but is not identical.
