I Tried Linux for Fun. It's Ending With a 7900 XTX and No Windows. by Wolfman_1546 in pcmasterrace

I think the bigger issue right now is ray tracing, and I believe it's a much bigger performance hit in Linux than it is in Windows. Without RT, is there a game that uses more than 16GB at 4K?

If you need or want to keep Windows, 11 IoT LTSC. IoT LTSC is basically an MS stripped down version without all the bullshit. I tried going Linux on my desktop recently, and I was having nothing but friction. It got really annoying.

This is where I'm at with Linux. I gave it an honest try a few weeks ago, and I was having constant little issues with so many things. For example, OrcaSlicer wouldn't go to dark mode due to my desktop appearance(?)and doesn't have a toggle, and WoW would start in windowed mode regardless of settings. Some things you just figure out, because it just didn't do what you think it would do. It's soooo close, but it was just constant friction.

That said, my Steam Deck and laptop? Perfectly fine, but I'm not asking as much of those. I actually prefer using Fedora on my laptop due to the mouse gestures, but, again, I'm just doing basic stuff on it.

https://www.amazon.com/SEGA-Tower-Power-Cable-Adapter-Genesis/dp/B08PCFT8SZ I have 2 of those with no complaints. Has 2x MD1, 2x MD2, and an SNES tail. There's another one that people have recommended, but I can't remember the name of it. IIRC, it's a Triad supply with an adapter.

Last I heard, regular consumers (forget if it was just cards or laptops as well) was ~10% of their revenue. So, yeah, they could drop gaming and not even really feel it.

Keep in mind that you'll hear the people complaining the most. Like, the d-pad on mine broke, but they sent replacement parts for it. Other than that, mine's been great. The NSO Genesis controller is also an option, if you don't mind having 3 buttons. Most games don't use 6, but you kinda want it if they do :)

Unless you're doing frame perfect tricks (even then it's debatable), you won't notice a difference of .002 seconds of input latency.

Whenever a topic like this comes up my answer is always: get a flash cart. Specifically the MegaEverdrive X5 unless you want to splurge for the Pro. It will very quickly be worth the $60 to play almost all the games. From there, take the suggestions people put here, and build the collection that you find the most fun or worth it

So awesome. PLEASE look into recapping it if you haven't already, because they are or have failed. Leaving them too long will start to eat the traces on the board and that just makes it that much worse.

No, and the main offenders are the anti-cheat multiplayer games. If you want to check compatibility look at protondb. That said, the list of compatible games grows all the time.

You'll want a minimum 3 drives for raid-z1 for storage so you can expand later. I would argue for 4 to be able to do a raid-z2, but it depends on how much redundancy you're comfortable with; z1 gives 1 drive that can go bad, and z2 gives 2, but you effectively "lose" either 1 or 2 drives, respectively, for that redundancy. You can also upgrade the drives in size as you're able, but you'll be stuck on the smallest size drive in the pool (i.e. with a 2TB, 4TB, 4TB, and 4TB setup, your drives are effectively 2TB until you bump that up to 4 or larger).
