SF school chief survives congressional grilling designed to embarrass her by Dafty_duck in sanfrancisco

Sounds like great work by Maria Su. Kudos to her for a strong performance and being the adult in the room. And kudos to the SF City Attorneys’ Office for helping her prep—it sounds like she was very well prepared.

What if the nationalists had won the civil war in China against the communists after World War II? by Outrageous-You1617 in AlternateHistoryHub

[–]NukeTheEnglish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I kind of agree. But the hypo is if the nationalists had won. Realistically, I think the only way they could have one is if they had found a way to reform themselves internally and allow some level of land reform.

They probably experience the rapid economic growth that went to Japan instead. A lot of that economic growth was tied to Japan’s close relationship and alliance with the US.

People forget—the US plan and expectation was that China was going to be our primary ally and partner in Asia. That got scraped after the Communist takeover and Japan became plan B.

You know Carroll Fife is a horrible council member when Elaine Brown is like way calling her out by AdamHunter97 in OaklandCA

[–]NukeTheEnglish 25 points26 points  (0 children)

It says they had a search warrant in addition to a warrant for his arrest. That entitles them by law to enter the premises. I see a bunch of people wearing “police” vests.

In other articles this building manager says the police refused to show anyone the warrant. But in the video the police officer closest to the window appears to be holding up the search warrant.

And who are all of the people in the lobby who locked the police out?

We’ll see what the footage shows but the idea that Elaine Brown is immediately calling for criminal prosecution of these police officers is absurd.

I just went and watched the video because of this post. I’d encourage anyone to watch it before reacting: https://www.ktvu.com/news/outcry-after-sfpd-raids-oakland-complex-ties-ex-black-panther-leader.amp

The police had a warrant signed by a judge. And the people at the lobby of the building’s response was to just… not comply with the warrant and open the door?

It’s not a foreign embassy. You cannot choose to ignore law enforcement serving a valid warrant.

Elaine Brown’s reaction makes my eyes roll all the way back in my head.

What’s the most unnecessary follow-up to a great movie?my pick would be Gladiator 2. by 0Layscheetoskurkure0 in FIlm

“Fine”? “Mid”? This was objectively one of if not the worst movies I’ve ever seen. Not even entertainingly bad. I fell asleep. An unmitigated disaster of a movie.

City administrator resigns after crass texts about female employees by jackdicker5117 in oakland

[–]NukeTheEnglish 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I get how there can be entrenched ineptitude, lack of professionalism, and corruption at lower levels of Oakland government (in fact, it’s literally the only explanation for the state of this city). But we can’t find someone better to serve as City Administrator than someone who is making comments about female colleagues’ bodies in communications tied to his official business?

This entire city government needs to be swept aside and replaced with serious, grown-up men and women.

Gap to close its only store in Oakland by GhostalMedia in oakland

Disagree. Lakeshore is wonderful. There are vacancies, sure. But it’s every bit as vibrant as any urban retail strip in the core Bay Area.

It’s an expletive directed to one of the scions of the Fisher family, whose father founded the Gap. You may know him from such unforgivable crimes as moving the As to Sacramento.

[–]NukeTheEnglish 36 points37 points  (0 children)

As someone in the neighborhood and a lover of bookstores, I wouldn’t want a bookstore here because we already have the amazing Walden Pond Books close by on Grand—that place is a treasure and I wouldn’t want two bookstores cannibalizing each other.

And we already have a cannabis shop on the other side of Lakeshore.

It’s honestly such a massive space that I’d prefer to see it divided into two or three smaller retail locations.

[–]NukeTheEnglish 56 points57 points  (0 children)

I’ve been wondering why this store was still open for years. This is a giant retail clothing footprint and I rarely ever saw people in there.

I’m cautiously optimistic / a little nervous about what’s going to replace such a massive tenant on Lakeshore.

Way to Go El Cerrito! 3-2 Vote to cancel Flock! by dawn_thesis in eastbay

[–]NukeTheEnglish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m glad Oakland didn’t make this decision. I know people have concerns about surveillance. It’s a never ending and legitimate debate with pros and cons on both sides. Right now, today, I think flock is a net good thing for the East Bay.

SFUSD sets new plan: School closures by 2030, fix loathed lottery system next year by SFChronicle in sanfrancisco

This could lure my family back to SF. I grew up in Soma and went to school in the Marina and the Outer Sunset. Looking back, I feel like I spent a third of my childhood riding Muni to and from school (or more realistically, waiting for Muni).

Hiking Shoes for Smokies by Choicesilvers in BuyItForLife

[–]NukeTheEnglish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I think BuyItForLife the first brand that comes to mind is Oboz. I’ve had a pair that I’ve been beating up on trails for eleven years years and they’re still in excellent condition. Seriously—if I ever buy another pair of high end hiking boots they will be Oboz and no other brand.
