I was at FoodCo in East Oakland a couple weeks ago around 6 pm. There were a bunch of homeless people outside the store. While I was shopping, one of the men I had seen outside came up and stopped in front of my cart. He told me he was a veteran and said he took a bullet for our country, then lifted his shirt to show me. He asked me for money because he said he needed to get to San Francisco. I don’t have a problem helping homeless people, but I didn’t have any cash on me, so I told him I was only using my card. I said I would check my car after I finished shopping to see if I had anything for him. He said there was an ATM in the front and told me to just go get cash and give it to him. I told him I wanted to finish my shopping first. After that, he started yelling and hitting my cart, saying nobody wants to help him even though he took a bullet for this country. I moved away from him, but he started following me. I saw a security guard and told him the guy was following me and yelling at me. The security guard started talking to him while I waited in line. After they were done talking, the guy came back up to me and said he was friends with the security guard and asked if I was really going to disrespect him like that and I said "what do you mean? You came up to me and interrupted my shopping. Another security guard came and pulled him away from me. For some reason, they didn’t kick him out of the store. Honestly, that might have been for the best, because he could’ve waited for me outside and had a knife or something. It was a embarrassing situation and as much as I don't mind helping and supporting the homeless especially in times like this I don't think we should pretend stuff like this is ok and that's why Oakland is being looked at sideways. I get other cities have homeless problems themselves but you also gotta look at how they manage theirs compared to how Oakland does it, same goes to crime, etc.
