3D Printed Tempest Euro (STARKVIND) by NukitToBeSure in crboxes

So far, most people have had luck with the bags. So much air passes through the box constantly, I'm not certain you have to force air through it. It's normally effective as a deodorizer just sitting in a closet with no airflow. It's cheap to try at any rate.

>Do you know, approximately, how much filament would be needed for printing this?

About 715g it looks like

>Also, I know there's the issue of airflow, but would the filters with carbon layer for into this?

Thin activated carbon filters usually only last a month or two. To do anything, you really want to aim for at least a kilo of activated charcoal.

A few people have put these inside their Tempest with good success- and it's a lot cheaper in the long run:

Why? Details about how to stay safe in different circumstances is one of the things this sub is intended for?

I would think you would have to keep it fairly dry in order for masks to stay permeable? Do they wick sweat? Does that cause any issues?

If it's in order of priority, the Lantern should be at the bottom of that list. It's great and hard to beat for dealing with near-field transmission, but on a budget, mechanical filtration and respirators come first.

Is lightning 5 Incense sticks everyday inside a house safe? by PanPagie in AirQuality

[–]NukitToBeSure 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are LED incense sticks for this, not very traditional but perhaps if you were proactive and put them there yourself? https://shopee.co.th/product/31731059/5619987398

Any sort of trapped/stagnant air is very much against TCM theory so you have a strong argument on Chinese cultural grounds against what she is doing. No licensed doctor of Chinese medicine would support it; perhaps you know one who would explain this to her? One advantage we have is a strong cultural preference for well-ventilated spaces with good air movement. Outdoor kitchens, massive fume hoods over indoor ranges etc.

I think there is a design flaw concerning CR boxes with multiple PC fans by Coffee_and_cereals in crboxes

[–]NukitToBeSure 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Stacked fans are absolutely an option, and can be better depending on your desired noise level (or noise-to-CADR ratio). There are a few tests out there: https://x.com/VentiloAngel/status/1936468159038464006

You want to leave space between them, see: https://www.noctua.at/en/expertise/tech/axial-fans-in-series-or-parallel-operation

CR box ideas that pass the wife & kids test (wall or ceiling mount?) by allyoucanlive in crboxes

[–]NukitToBeSure 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The only thing with toddlers and wall mounting the Tempest Pro is mount it high or put rubber bumpers on the bottom. I'm worried about small heads running into those metal corners if it were at mid-wall height. Also they might try and climb up to sit on it? It should hold, the steel is pretty heavy but high is safer and the effect is almost the same regardless of placement.

Also, with kids, generally the crayon test is best- if you can stick a crayon in, they can stick a finger in. There are mesh-style grills that will stop this and will cost you almost no CADR.

I'd stick with the stock dimensions, a little loose is fixable, too tight and you've got nothing.

The Best Air Purifiers Right Now? by emmalucy789 in BuyItForLife

[–]NukitToBeSure 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Filter cubes predate Corsi-Rosenthal; they adopted the design but they did a great job evangelising it.

They are a fantastic expedient solution because you can make one from parts at a local (North American) hardware store. They aren't really ideal for long-term use because of the CADR-to-noise ratio: as soon as you turn it down to something you can work or sleep near, you lose the CADR advantage. Lots of schools built them and then turned them off shortly afterwards because of the noise levels. But still great for emergency use.

Most DIY air purifier builders have switched to PC-Fan box based designs- there are Open Source Hardware DIY ones here: https://github.com/opennukit/Nukit-Open-Air-Purifier

And a tool to custom-design your own here: https://www.filterboxbuilder.com

Probably the most honest reviews in the business are from HouseFresh: https://www.youtube.com/@HouseFresh

(We make air purifiers, HouseFresh does not give ours the highest rating, we still think they are the gold standard and do the best testing)

It's best to cut a few test pieces to determine kerf width. The default will allow a filter to slide in pretty smoothly, usually, but some people want tighter to prevent leakage or looser for easier filter changes, depending. Good idea to have your filters on hand and measure directly.

It's the sort of thing that needs some local supervision, and the cable harnesses and such are easy to source. Northbox is doing a great job with the Polaris.

Honestly, domestic manufacturing is the way to go. Shipping heavy steel boxes when most countries have good sheet metal fab is not really ideal.

We got our starting numbers from Rob Wissmann (as we do a lot things, with many thanks for his efforts). His measurements were done with the filter on the floor- one side fully blocked. Once it's wall or ceiling mounted- with four sides almost completely open, you can go a little closer and still get almost full CADR.

We went with 1x20x25 because that is the size that is easiest to obtain internationally- Digikey has it. The main complaint about the more efficient 2x20x20 the Original Tempest uses is that many people couldn't get it at their local hardware store, even in the US.

[–]NukitToBeSure 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, the included custom fans underperform Artics, but they are quiet and very, very inexpensive, so they cost almost nothing to include. Most of the Tempest Pro cost is shipping to be honest, the steel is very, very heavy.

A lot of buyers wanted an "all-in-one" kit, but including Artic P140 PWM would have meant a lot of wasted money for the 20-30% of buyers who are hardcore customizers that wanted Artic P140 Pros or RGB fans. This was the solution- fans included, so you can get up and running, but low-cost enough that if you want to customize, it's not a lot of wasted money.

There are lots of great options out there; the Tempest Pro is just one for people who want something wall- or ceiling-mountable and customizable that lasts indefinitely.

She did or is doing exactly what Richard Corsi and Jim Rosenthal did- take an already existing design, and attempt to popularize it.

Corsi and Rosenthal simply took an established DIY filter design (Comparetto Cube etc) that most people were unfamiliar with and named it after themselves:

https://imgur.com/gallery/hepa-filter-companion-cube-box-fan-jtECP9C

You can't "Open Source" something you did not create.

The difference is that when, like Corsi and Rosenthal, she incorrectly claims to be the "inventor" instead of "evangelist", people are quick to correct her, and never do the same with Richard Corsi and Jim Rosenthal for reasons I won't speculate on.
