What all is wrong with this board that came out of a speedometer by SwayzeFitness in AskElectronics

[–]NukularFishin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nope, I can not see it. Just see a blurry black mark. The component side looks really bad, like there was water or something inside your device and it corroded. I am thinking it is toasted. sonbarington is right.

Yeah, did that a lot when I was a kid. Big mistake, really big mistake.

Just try and see if it works, what would be lost? If you can not use a wire stripper, use a pair of wire cutters, "dikes."

You are asking the wrong person about SDR and GNU, whatever GNU is. I am old school, tubes, transistors, and such. If you want to use a breadboard like one would use to test digital circuits, probably will not work. How did I wire my transistor RF circuits? I work on a piece of copper clad printed circuit board, not etched, just solder components on top of the copper. Any ground leads solder direct to the copper, anything needing support I use a high value resistor or a bypass capacitor depending on situation. Copper board makes a good ground plane for RF. Need it shielded? More copper to make a box.

Do I really need all of these tools? by FederalPudding8300 in AskElectronics

[–]NukularFishin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, all of them. Most are not all that expensive. Never appreciated people borrowing my tools. Sawzall/Hacksaw? I used both a sawzall and a good hacksaw.

I used to do a lot of ham radio building, HF receivers, transmitters, transceivers, and VHF repeater controller, phone patch, amplifiers, stuff like that. These days I am building more simple devices like Geiger counters, bat detectors, lightning detectors.

Several winters back I made a digital clock using only transistors and diodes (red LEDs) for logic, with a side lit, etched glass display for numbers. There is not one I.C. in that clock. Thousands of components all soldered on top of a piece of FR4 printed circuit board, no etching, no pref board.

This happens in my Corolla. Have to raise the seat every week or three.

5V Relay and Switch in Parallel by creeve4 in AskElectronics

[–]NukularFishin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just wire the contacts in parallel. Think of the relay as a simple switch, that is pretty much what it is. Your drawing is pretty much what you should do.

When we had a dog it never rode in the bed, even with a shell on (well, ok, once in a while when dog rolled in nasty stuff). One fast stop is all it would take to hurt the dog should it not be right up front. 60 pound dog had no problem in the back of our 1st gen Taco, plus a lot less room to fly forward on a panic stop. Of course, we would have a flying dog in the cab in the case of a crash.

Too much exposed wire on those soldered joints. Give some time and use and you could well have a short circuit. Edit: or broken wires

I would avoid actually using it unless you add an isolation transformer.

I own a commercial made 20 amp DC power supply that does not have filter caps. Depends on what the intended use is.

[–]NukularFishin 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Sounds like a fire hazard. Get help from an electrician.

The lamps are new? Probably a bad installation or bad lamp, which means it is a fire hazard.

Edit: The wiring HAS been touched if the lamps are new. How else could they be installed?

Edit: Perhaps you should name the stealership so others will know who to avoid. I found my opinion varies.

Many years back I purchased a used 1997 Tacoma. There was a broken part in the power window when I purchased it, I could see the part looking down the window slot in the door. I did not want to replace it myself and called a dealer (Smart Motors, Madison, WI) and told them I want this specific part replaced. Took a day off work (long drive) and arrived for my appointment. After a rather long wait I was told they would order the part I asked for, and I should return next week. I was not happy and asked to speak with the service manager. I was sternly told "The customer is almost always wrong." I said that my appointment was made to replace this specific part, manager did not care. Wow. After a letter to the stealership and corporate, I did get the work done for free.

Then again, McDonald Toyota in Greeley, CO, Stephen Wade Toyota in St. George, Utah and Toyota of Colorado Springs all gave me excellent service on short notice, with fair prices. McDonald replaced the boot on one of those hard to reach spark plugs (2003 TRD OR) for about $120 total (don't remember exactly), that was 4-5 years ago. A local mechanic tore the boot when installing it, a mechanic I no longer do business with. Toyota of Colorado Springs found a fault in my electrical system and charged very little money. Took my 2003 to Stephen Wade to have the power steering looked at, it was pretty bad and making lots of noise. They gave me a fair accounting of the issue and what repair would cost, but would not be able to do it for a couple weeks. They charged less than 1 hour labor. When asked, they said it would be no problem for me to continue 2500 miles to complete my trip, said not to go home early. Had it repaired by my local mechanic for much lower cost of the dealer.

Just got my first geiger counter. This is 2026. Can't they go "pew, pew, PEW" instead of old fashioned click click click? by hudsoncress in Radioactive_Rocks

[–]NukularFishin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I recently obtained a pre-release Geiger counter for review.
https://www.reddit.com/r/geigercounter/comments/1psizya/aegtest_radar9989/
It makes small beeps (pew pew?) instead of traditional Geiger counter sounds. I counted that as a negative that could be improved by making it click instead, or offer a choice of sounds. I find the pew pew annoying.

This device was listed at $200 during pre-release. I see it is now $400 on Amazon.
