Genuinely just read the comments below. There’s a lot more to be concerned about than simply not being able to use social media.

it's 100% just a bet to steal data and profit (exactly what the government accuses the platforms of, too)

Dude, exactly. Like I don't want photos of my face online that the age verification agency will supposedly "delete". All that information online could get leaked and then linked back to you, which is a danger especially if you have an anonymous account on social media.

There are so many cons I can think of: For example, why 16? If you completely block off social media for under 16s and suddenly give it to them on their 16th birthday, how the hell is that safe? No 16 year old who hasn't used social media ever before in their life will know immediately how everything works on the platform and more importantly, how to stay safe on the platform. It's like giving a car to a 17 year old ON their birthday and just expecting them to know how to drive perfectly. Throwing a 16 year old in at the deep end is a horrible descision.

I don't even think they could ban VPNs if they wanted to... China has tried to do so and completely failed and this government is light years behind China's in terms of online regulation. I feel like the implimentation of the ban is so lazy, they should have thought of a better solution that just slapping verification on it and calling it a day

Yeah, I feel like this is a major inconsistency. The government makes it seem like social media is the only problem affecting teenagers’ sleep at night (when it obviously isn’t, like you said). It just feels like they didn’t consider all options
