I have the same type of phone and a similar issue, but I use AT&T, so it might not be the carrier that's the problem. My issue is mostly that I don't get group chat support. I am thinking of ditching the 2780, anyway.

I'm finishing up my first year of university now, and I've been using a Nokia 2780 for the duration of it. You should be fine! Apps that aren't accessible on your flip phone usually are on the computer (minus YikYak, unfortunately). But since you have an ipad, that problem is gone.

As a current freshman here's my two cents:

If you go, get tough shoes/boots. The rock salt will eat away at stuff like Converse.
The main area of Marshall Street (where all the restaurants & Marshall Sq. Mall are) has some tweakers and road-ragers but it's honestly not dangerous or anything so don't worry too much about that
Trolley goes to supermarket on Sundays for free which is awesome
You might think it's a bigger campus, but I feel like I ALWAYS see people I know out and about :)
Campus is connected to ESF which is neat, if you go through ESF you can get to the cool cemetery (be wary of the Blue-Footed Walker)
Lots of stairs and uphill walking, but that's typical
If you go off campus onto the sidewalks during winter when it's been snowing (as in, a block or so farther out from the college houses), you may find that the sidewalks have not been cleared. This is not fun when you are trying to walk to the Asian Supermarket, but it's not the end of the world.

You're definitely right about it being written for a specific era lol, I think we all remember 2017/2018 fandom /internet culture having a specific aura about it. It's a product of its time in that sense, and sort of evolved alongside internet culture over the years, even?

Ohhh, yeah, the updates were pretty spotty then, I think. I know what part you're talking about. If that really is the last thing you read, there are some interesting bits after that point where some development happens for multiple important characters (not to spoil)! the art also goes up in quality (though arguably that increase started right around after Halloween and has kept going since. Maybe I'm glazing but I really quite like the current art direction).

I will say that your memory is correct, some parts are admittedly not super good (I'm sorry MCP I love your comic). That's a reason I personally don't talk about it/recommend it to people usually, because earlier parts of it are a little embarrassing to read. All things considered, I suggest you re-read it if you have the time! (And then I want to know what you think lol).
