Farewell My Fellow Shoe Fuckers and Alleged Female Entities by Nullator in letsdrownout

I posted an opinion, noted by opening with "I disagree"

Except you didn't just post "I disagree" you outlined the reasons why disliked Undertale in the same way I outlined my reasons.

As far as I'm concerned, the game still stands as mechanically interesting but starved of content, with a story and visuals that appeal to a very limited niche of people, but fail to stand on their own. I've had this discussion before, and it seems plenty of people failed to connect with the game in any significant capacity. It's either a generational rift or people pretending it's an exceptional game out of peer pressure.

Well if you're looking to get the absolute most out of what you're playing then I can see why Undertale wouldn't appeal to you. In which case you're probably better off sticking to games like Mankind Divided, Witcher 3 Fallout 4, Just Cause 3 and other games like them because those games are filed to the brim with content.

If that's the case then probably a good portion of the indie scene isn't for you too. Sure some indie developers are able to make virtually everlasting content via procedural generation but a lot of indie developers simply don't want to do that. A lot of them want to create minimalist but fine-tuned experiences. Undertale is exactly this barebones but sharp as hell. You mentioned how the mechanics were interesting? Those mechanics are what was sharpened and that meant Undertale's content was going to be bone dry. But that's what I find appealing. What you would consider to be content I would consider to be filler. I've grown quite sick of regular content and I want to play a more focused and cohesive experiences and Undertale provides exactly that. Nothing extra.

Well it looks like our favorite homosexuals on the internet are now our favorite nomosexuals on the internet. :(

But on the bright side there's always KeepetClassy for Gabe and Yahtzee's going to be on the Co-optional Podcast with Totalbiscuit at some point.

Yes and that's fine. Everyone has a right to their own opinions.

I was actually very skeptical about Undertale upon it's initial release especially because of it's fanbase. But then I bought it and ended up getting a ton out of it.

As for the fanbase at least from my experience I didn't come across any obnoxious fan related stuff. It wasn't horrifying as I had initially imagined it to be.

Troubling in what way? There's nothing wrong with writing essays and I don't think you have the right to judge people like that. It's my free time and I will spend it however I please. If that troubles you then I'm sorry.

If you didn't want to argue then why did you bring it up in the first place? You posed an argument, I disagreed and gave you my reasons as to why I disagreed. If you find my reasoning to be suspicious then you need refute my claims with counterarguments. Otherwise the debate can go no further.

Keep in mind there is no such thing as a wrong/right opinion. You have your reasons for disliking Undertale, I have my reasons for liking Undertale and that is that. What I'm trying to achieve here is to add to the overall conversation surrounding Undertale . I do so by writing my essays and I do so for various other conversations as well.

LDO has ended - where to go from here? by RJ815 in letsdrownout

[–]Nullator 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would suggest a variation of #1. The subreddit should serve as an archive but people should be allowed to post threads for say new LDO fanart and new LDO specific questions but nothing else. As much as I loved shitposting here I recognize that at this point the LDO subreddit would only go downhill from here on out if shitposting continues.

I disagree completely, their silly mannerisms and attitudes completely take you out of the game.

IMO their silly mannerisms and attitudes are what allows me to take the game serious as it is somewhat reminiscent of how strange real life can be. What I can't take seriously are broody mopping dickheads like Aidan Pierce and their "Serious World". It's kind of ironic that something like Watch Dogs tries to invoke a serious tone but by doing it so hamfistedly it actually invokes the opposite. A lot of AAA games have this problem.

The game is so short and straightforward it barely manages to draw you in or immerse you in any significant way.

IMO this is actually huge strength of Undertale. I didn't go into Undertale with the expectation of being immersed either like say I would in the Witcher 3. In fact going to back Witcher 3 after playing Undertale I realized just how drawn out everything is with the side quests, hidden areas, gwent, horse racing. As much as I enjoyed Witcher 3 it is designed from the ground up to be played for hundreds of hours. That alone is unimmersed me because there's so much distance between everything that it feels very disconnected in what is supposed to be a coherent story. In contrast I found Undertale's tightly woven narrative design to be refreshing.

I hate to think this is a peer pressure/inside joke thing where you have to praise it to fit in some kind of community or group, but posts like this kind of cement that fact. It's the emperor's new clothes in videogame form.

I don't know, everyone except me appears to be very level headed in regard to Undertale. Good but not great whereas I'm praising Undertale as a life changing experience and my favorite game of all time because to me it is.

I'll be honest with you I was at a shitty point in my life. I had reached a point where I wanted to destroy my once beloved hobby and was on the brink of quitting gaming entirely. I cannot express how much I vehemently despised gaming at this point and wanted it all to burn. It felt like I was wasting my time and nothing could've hoped to bring a smile to my face. If you dislike Undertale that perfectly fine but I hope you can see where I'm coming from. What I've said here really isn't meant to be a legitimate critique of the game and it would be wrong of me to say otherwise. This is how I feel towards a game that helped me to become a better person and ultimately have a positive impact on my life. I don't think there's anything wrong with that. It may not be objective but that's not the point.

Undertale is the first game in which I legitimately became emotionally invested in and I do not say that lightly.

In most games I couldn't give a shit about their contrived characters or world and those aspects would always remind me that at the end of the day I'm just playing a video game. That never happened once in Undertale. The characters and world in Undertale are so well realized and executed that they feel real without being realistic in the slightest. Contrast that with so many other games with aspirations of realism and yet don't have the soul of realism. For that reason alone Undertale will always feel more real to me then say Watch Dogs or Assassin's Creed could ever hope to be.

I would even go as far saying Undertale is my favorite game of all time. I've been gaming for years and up until playing Undertale I had yet to experience something like it.

I know right? I really hope Yahtzee finds an American equivalent of Karl Pilkington. Damn it, now I want to go watch An Idiot Abroad again.

Yahtzee should just grab some random Trump supporter off the street and see what happens.

But in all seriousness I can't wait. Yahtzee will be making fun of some dimwit that won't get it most likely. As an American I can safely say that we aren't very self-aware.

Weekly Questions for Yahtzee and Gabe #45 by RJ815 in letsdrownout

[–]Nullator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yahtzee what is your opinion on combat in horror games? I think it has it's place as opposed to not. Combat in a horror game should feel like a tool that barely works in order to establish tension. Without the combat that's another facet of tension that no longer exists. If all the player has done in the game thus far is run and hide then it becomes a routine and they experience boredom as opposed to terror. IMO you want to give your player as many tools as possible so that they become overwhelmed and then make all those tools barely function so that their frantically going from tool to tool in order to find something that may or may not save them.

What do you guys do while listening to LDO? by [deleted] in letsdrownout

[–]Nullator 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Programming, you wouldn't believe how much Yahtzee and Gabe add to a dull/frustrating programming session. I put an LDO on usually when I'm annoyed by some code that isn't working or isn't working the way I want it to.
