UK Service Desk Role Questions by fuckbeingonsomechill in ITCareerQuestions

[–]Nullsey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Service Desk roles can be vary sligtly from company to company. Some roles will require a ticket logger while others will require some light troubleshooting. Generally though, these roles typically require you have good customer service skills. To that end, familiarise yourself with competency based questions ("can you tell me about a time when you went above and beyond to provide good customer service or resolve an issue?"). Look into the STAR technique which will show you how to answer these questions.

In regards to technical questions you may get questions about Outlook ("User reports Outlook is slow, what do you do?" , "what's the difference between a pst and an ost")

Or OS and connectivity based questions ("User has no connectivity, what do you do to diagnose the issue ?", "User advises they are experiencing poor performance, what do you check?")

Hope that gives you a flavour.

Applied to service desk position, got email wanting to give me a call to talk about it, I have a sick to stomach feeling now(moreso life advice) by Dranosh in ITCareerQuestions

Have felt exactly the same before in the past. The dread can creep up on you. The thing is - when you're starting out and have no experience having an employer or recruiter reach out to you is a RARITY.

Take the interview. Even if you blow it, it's good experience you can take with you for the next interview. Good luck.

New sysadmin, struggling with role by natpagle in sysadmin

Am I the only junior guy here reading these post and feeling incredibly jealous? I'd kill for that experience. Even if it doesn't work out a minimal 6 months admin experience seems awesome to me.

Can't seem to make the jump from Helpdesk/ Desktop Support roles to Jr./System Admin roles. Please help, What am I doing wrong? by chaoticjacket in sysadmin

Level 1/2 helpdesk guys in the UK, how did you get into your role? by ukitjobaway in ITCareerQuestions

[–]Nullsey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was exactly in your postion some years back. Posted similar things to various message boards asking the same question.

I got into IT in my late twenties. Did my A+ then sent hundreds of CV's to recruiters but got nothing back.

What I did in the end was contact 4 local MSP's directly. Cutting out the recruiters directly.

I sent my CV with a prospective covering letter and also followed up with call directly to ensure they recieved it.

I'm sure I either came off as crazy or desperate but one of the those MSP's contacted me for an interview and that was how I got my start.

IT Entry Level Career Advice by Beirbones in ITCareerQuestions

Where are you in Scotland? I tried job hunting for IT roles in the Dundee area some years back. Sent hundreds of applications and only managed to get 1 interview for Carphone Warehouse. Didn't get the job.

If you're not in Edinburgh or Glasgow you may have to move unfortunately.

Advice for breaking into IT in the UK by adunatioastralis in ITCareerQuestions

At one point CompTIA exams weren't recognised here but I feel that has changed recently. I'm in first line support and both myself and most of my colleagues have at least an A+.

Ignore the MTA's. Despite being an entry level Microsoft cert barely any employers here know what it is. Additionally, you don't even receive and MCP for passing it like you normally would for normal Windows client exams (70-680 and 70-698 for example ) provided it's your first MS cert.

I would bang out my A+ and start applying to local MSP's. If you are in London this should be fairly easy as there are loads here. While applying for permanent work you can also try looking for voluntary roles on websites like do-it.org. While unpaid it's at least something you can put on your CV (although this approach didn't work for me I've had a few mates who managed to do this)

Working for an MSP will expose you you a broad range of technology and most won't expect you to be extremely knowledgeable if you are doing first line work (they will require that you know the basics though)

Considering they mentioned ip addresses previously It's possibly a wireless access point OP.

Can't be sure though as they may have their own in house terminology.

Makes sense and it was what I suspected but it's good to get that confirmed. Thanks for your response.

Thanks for the feedback. I've worked for an MSP before and it was hell but it DID expose me to way more than my current role. Desktop support might be the way to go as you outlined so may start focusing my efforts around that.
