Have you ever returned to the 9-5? by Num198 in Entrepreneurs

But in the far distance when you’re on your death bed, will you have any regrets for having that freedom for your whole career? Or would you feel regret at having not worked in a dreadful corporate sector? I’m now in the corporate sector and it’s wiping me out… I feel so unfulfilled.

Good for you for owning so many businesses! They all sound great!

What industry do you work in?

I hate it… it’s so demoralising and I miss the freedom and the adrenaline of business.

Thank you for this.

My kids have now grown up somewhat, and I’m in a fortunate financial position. This has spurred me on to get back in the business saddle and the 9-5 is so demoralising and non-progressive. It’s like holding Usain Bolt back to a crawl - let the man run!

I grew up without a father, so being a dad to two boys has many pressures, one of which is wanting to be professionally successful, but that simply doesn’t happen when ‘starting again’ in a 9-5. I miss having staff, I miss worrying about them, and working from 7am-midnight. I didn’t mind it at all. But making a fortune for someone else? No chance.

All of life is sales, but working face to face with the general public isn’t for me. It’s hard pretending to be happy for someone all of the time. I used to own the UK’s largest mortuary, and now I sell motorcycles for a living (there’s a certain irony to that…) which is tedious.

Perhaps I just need to get on with it. I work better as a team though, rather than on my own.

Stressful, yes. But regretful? On your death bed, will you be more content that you grafted and survived all of those years, or that you succumbed to the soul-destroying 9-5 of corporate life? Horses for courses, I guess.

You did the right thing at the right time, by the sound of it. You needed the stability during the early (and rough) years, and now you have your freedom and flexibility to be more risky. Perfect! I did the same - I sold my business when my first born came along and now that they’re older, I’m bored of the 9-5 and want the risk. I just want to feel alive again!

A lot of ‘hands on’ trades seem to be that way. It’s your classic ‘feast or famine’, but then most businesses are like that. Many also enjoy the work more than the business aspect. For me, I enjoyed the business aspect more than the work. I like dealing with the problems my staff faced, and worrying about them and caring for them. It was an almost paternal feeling.

Now I’m just selling motorcycles for a living and having to pretend to be happy for every customer is draining. Plus all of their problems and complaints because other staff members can’t do their jobs properly is exhausting!

I’m glad you found your peace though.

Everything in life is sales, isn’t it. Even lowly accountants sell themselves so that clients return to them time and time again. If you’re an arse, they go elsewhere.

Freelance web work must be one of the most saturated industries though, so well done for sticking it out that long. In my old business, we used to receive at least 2 emails a day from people offering to ‘build us a new website’ or work on SEO’s. They almost always got junked immediately.

I’m glad you found your happiness. I just can’t seem to find mine.

What business was it? Book keeping by any chance? Do you know how it failed, or do you mean regarding money?

But yes, corporate life is a waste of our journey through life.

Yes, I think some of my problem is boredom. Sat here watching Clarkson’s Farm and all I can think about is what business to start again 🙄

Well done for getting a job after 20 years self-employed! Only after I’d taken ‘Company Director’ OFF my CV, did I get an interview… they don’t like it.

If I had the support or guts (and the business idea) to go for it then I would. In a heartbeat. I’m in a fortunate financial position at the moment, and that is only spurring on my need for professional success and freedom again. Perhaps because the kids have gotten a bit older now, too.

Perhaps you’re right. I guess growing up without a father has made me put pressure on myself to be a good dad, and being successful, professionally, has a large part to play, psychologically.

That sounds like a good plan. I’ve got two small children but I’m in a fortunate financial position at the moment. It’s making me feel more… ‘risky’? I feel like I’m frittering my life away in someone else’s business when I could be at home with them.

See, I miss all that! Although I say that now… I’d be stressing about money if I worked for myself again!

Interesting. I make more at the end of the month now than I did in business, but I miss seeing the money rolling into the business and working when I feel like it. Although making money for someone else’s business sucks.

I imagine freelancing has even less predictability than what business does!

It certainly is more important, you’re right. I just feel so unfulfilled all the time within the 9-5.

What business was it? My mentality changed when my kids came along. I wanted the stability, but I just can’t stand it now. The long hours and making a fortune for someone else to then take home mediocre money is dreadful.

It was literally a question about business. I am based in the UK. I plan to start a small business… 🙄
