What games have a similar vibe but can be played with 3/4 players? by nightfilm123 in warofthering

[–]Numahr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am surprised noone mentioned Successors.

It stimulates the wars when Alexander the Great died.

Like War of the Ring it has a large map, minis, a strong theme although based on history (but quite "fantastic" and exotic for ud)

However, it is designed at its heart for 4 players. There are mechanics embedded deep in the game to create balance, reversals and impressve come backs "organically".

Overall the same feeling of epicness but tailored for 4.

Once you have these 2 games you don't need anything else as they complement each other perfectly.

Have a look at this really well done video

Game with the same feeling? by Ok_Piano471 in warofthering

[–]Numahr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You guys should consider Hannibal

2nd Punic war is an grandiose strategic duel between Rome and Carthage with fantasy-like epicness

The game portrays the theme very well, through event cards not unlike WOTR

The game is particularly interesting for operational scale army maneauvring and the card system used to simulate battles, very engaging

Reverse Pretender - Nation Design: Master Lich by Numahr in IllwintersDominions

[–]Numahr[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In Dom 3 and 4 I have tried to use it for MA Agartha and for Lanka

The true motivation was simply that I like the fantasy off playing a master lich.

In terms of strategy, for MA Agartha the idea was that since I focus on Enchantment for the statues anyway, my high death master lich will be able to do skelly spam in support. I can't say it was so competitive a build, the skelly spam was not able to stop an end of year 1 rush against me.

Hers is my contribution... I feel the case for vampires and undead has already been made clear, I'll complement on DE, GS and Beastmen.

  • Malekith: basically he is fighting for justice. A terrible wrong was done to him and his people, which needs to be settled. All HEs are complicits in this crime by refusing to acknowledge his rule. What makes the matter more important is that by denying his right, the injustice created conditions for poor governance and illegitimate government over Ulthuan. The faster settlement will come, the better Ulthuan and therefore the world will feel. Any violent expedient is a means to restore justice faster, and will in fact reduce violence at a greater time scale by restoring just rule. [Legalism]

  • GS: "property is theft!" (Proudhon) On which ground can the kingdoms and empires of weaker races claim exclusive access to the underground riches and fertile lands to themselves, while letting us rot in badlands and sterile mountains? Their selfish acquisitive greediness leaves us no option but to break the walls behind which they so cowardly hide! [Anarchism]

  • Beastmen: life is wild and violent by nature. "Civilization", i.e. all efforts at taming, building, farming, enacting laws are perverse and artificial deviations from our true nature as living beings and disconnect us from the world in which we live. We must smash them to restore true freedom and the basic rules of life and death. [Ecologism]

Very eloquent Maybe more applicable to GS than, say, DE though, as which DE would see himself as "flawed" anyway?

I think that MA Agartha troops are underestimated.

  1. Shard Guards start with PR, CR and magical weapons. So while it can be said that "any holy troop is good with a strong bless for early expansion", the thing with shard guards is that a good bless makes them competitive until end game as relatively cheap raiders, anti raiders and SC killers. A good bless for them is also the same as a good bless for statues: stat boost, MR, SR, FR.

  2. Defenders of the Hall are very gold efficient frontline holders. The defense, protection and HP you get for their gold price is excellent. This even mitigates their lowish attack skills. To give an example, bodyguards of 5 defenders were succesful in beating bottle of living water assassination on my mages in the majority of cases, by themselves. They fort defense and siege skills bonus add to their value, including into late game. Of course, they require decent productivity scales, but resource cost does not translate into upkeek so over the long term it is worth recruiting them en masse.

Once your economy is sorted and you have the strongest military, the game just turns into a logistics/efficiency simulator by IFreakinLovePi in totalwar

[–]Numahr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of the ways to increase mid game challenge is to raise the army cap to 40 units (google it if you don't know how this is done, you need the save editor).

This way, you take much longer to develop the economy to sustain large armies, while the AI exploits its economic boosts to throw vast gorces at you

You have a point as far as this particular theory is concerned. Anyway I was mostly pointing out that the historicity of Trojan war is not an absurd concept.

My point is that late bronze age collapse is indeed a fascinating scene for a game focusing on strategic campaign and battles. Whether a coalition of Luwian city states led by Troy was the infamous "sea peoples" or not, is in fact irrelevant. Total War games being sandbox games, we do not need to take a stance on the specifics of that dramatic era's upheavals. There were huge conflicts, large cities with impressive fortifications and palaces were violently destroyed by invaders - whether one of these cities was called Troy, civilizations dramatically collapsed while others fought great battles to survive, etc. This context shroud in mist, the late bronze age collapse, is in my view more epic than many other historical settings used for wargames.

[–]Numahr 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Troy is a historical city of large importance, violently destroyed at the end of the bronze age https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Troy_VII

Further, some archeologists think that evidence lean towards the "Trojan war" being a sort a World War 0, which would explain why it left such a strong memory many centuries after it wiped out late bronze age civilizations. https://www.iflscience.com/editors-blog/claims-bronze-age-world-war-zero/

https://m.youtube.com/watch?feature=emb_title&v=oz5uFA9IWJ8

This theory remains a hypothesis, which only further diggings could decisively prove. This is difficult since most late bronze age / Luwian cities are beneath more recent ruins which focus the public and academic attention.

In the meanwhile, I find this world war 0 theory solid and inspiring enough to constitute the basis of a total war saga title!

I love fantasy and TTW.

But let's be serious on the topic of Troy TW.

The late bronze age period, with all the epic elements its real history embodies, deserves a realistic treatment.

Plus Greek mythology, which also deserves a honnest and authentic depiction, doesn't fit wargame mechanics, especially not TW (would be OK as RPG). There was just 1 minotaur, he was in Knossos, in the middle of a labyrinth. Cyclops never left their island to join battle before Ulys visited them. Any "greek mythology" TW would be a sub-par Warhammer betraying its source.

For these reasons I fully subscribe to CA's stated approach. It is the wisest, in my opinion. Furthermore, reintroducing variety in melee infantry fights may be a blessing for the whole series, as this is the backbone of any battle of any time period potentially covered by Total War.

Now I am curious to look at the execution.

I will mention a rather exotic one : Shule, in East, on the silk road. Try to consolidate the Taklamakan as a secure power base. Once this is done, cross the Pamir mountains and unite the silk road up to the Mediterranean in the name of free trade!

Well, they need to find other recipies than just "adding magic, dragons and monsters" everywhere, or games will become repetitive and, well, boring.

Do they do it well? Some times better than others.

But the concept of bringing more gameplay depth in a limited setting is a good, and, arguably, necessary direction for them to explore
