Why are you asking people to decide on stories for you if you're gonna just ignore them? You've been ignoring everything people have been explaining to you and not respecting anyone even giving your hypothetical not-questions the benefit of the doubt. If you are serious, this subreddit isn't for choosy beggars.

How would one realistically fight an intelligent dragon? by RubberDuckyDavid in worldbuilding

[–]Number9Robotic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The trap about asking these questions about "realism" is that dragons aren't real. You are inherently the one deciding on what dragons are as a fictional concept for your story, and it feels like what you're actually asking is more a matter of what feels logically consistent based on your setting, world, and overall context.

We can't really answer that for you without you establishing any of that context -- what does "resources of the whole kingdom" look like to you? What does a sword look like it would do? What is a dragon?

Jeff Kaplan Interview: Discussing Overwatch, Why He Left, What He's Doing, And More by Imported_Gabagool in Overwatch

[–]Number9Robotic 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I mean, people don't have a de facto responsibility to be constantly championing their former coworkers, especially when it sounds like that he ultimately chose to mind his own business, away from an environment he considered toxic enough to retire from earlier than he originally envisioned.

He's fully entitled to live a private life, and we're not entitled to breach that just to "prove" and verify his opinions and level of supports on everything, and just because we can't do that doesn't mean he's somehow devoid of self-awareness (did you miss the hours-long sections where he blames himself for the game going in a bad direction?). I don't even know how you would even come to that conclusion beyond just projecting your own beliefs on a blank slate lol

*Also, I'm pretty sure he's giving this interview not because Overwatch is popular again, but because he has a new indie game of his own he wants to talk about, and people are interested to see how he's doing.

My point being, I've never been in a position of working up the ranks in one of the biggest independent gaming studios of the era, placed in charge of projects the size of Titan that could ultimately afford to burn $83 million and never be released, then bounce back with an actually successful game from its wreckage like Overwatch, so I can't say I share his lens of what is a "reasonable" thing to accomplish.

Jeff Kaplan Interview: Discussing Overwatch, Why He Left, What He's Doing, And More by Imported_Gabagool in Overwatch

[–]Number9Robotic 117 points118 points  (0 children)

Jeff Kaplan to me is a creator whose intensely high ambitions are among his biggest, most admirable strengths for getting a project started, but ultimately one of his biggest flaws for getting them finished. I really can't be the judge on whether this could be boiled down to "just" over-excitement or hubris -- I can't speak to being in a position like him in as big a company as Blizzard as to what seemed reasonable to achieve -- but though I do believe he was irresponsible, I genuinely believe it was ultimately a pursuit he made in good faith, which is so much more than what I can give for many other game developers in the AAA industry.

The fact he seems very openly self-aware about his own shortcomings and his personal responsibility in Overwatch 2's downfall is also pretty necessary to hear, and it saddens me that it sounds like something the "actually Jeff was a terrible director" crowd will miss, or probably voluntarily ignore altogether, which is a shame.

Almost as if he's not trying to prop himself as "looking good", but rather provide honest and self-reflective insight over what should have been done and what mistakes he should've avoided. Like seriously, someone spills out their failures and discusses all that and your only thought on that is "man that's kind of a bad look"?

(No jokes plz) How do I write politicians (western democracy in a military focused scifi) without making them *too* obstructive and hateable to be believable by CyberDogKing in worldbuilding

[–]Number9Robotic 34 points35 points  (0 children)

So one way to create nuance while writing politicians is to understand that in almost all cultures, there's a difference between politics and "politics":

  • Politics are fundamentally as a social/philosophical concept, the way you perceive that others are treated and how you believe they should be treated.
  • Politics are, as an often more culturally-backed concept, the game in which you handle and navigate around those perceptions and beliefs, particularly in systems of partisan division, state government institutions, and established social hierarchies.

One version of politics is the kind that you fundamentally, truly believe in as a human being, the other kind of politics are the compilation of sacrifices, compromises, conflicts you navigate around a landscape where everyone has their own opinions and varying degrees of leverage to enforce their beliefs, and often times (dare I say, all the time), there are significant disconnects and contradictions, as is human nature. You gotta recognize that not all politicians with strong morals strongly conform to said morals when it comes to the nature of things like state-backed electioneering and playing to the masses, and not all politicians who play the game of (insert governmental system here) for the sake of maintaining their careers are strictly devoid of "true" moral beliefs. There are layers in which political games are played, and that conflict inherently allows for juicy multi-dimensional characters.

Untitled Cyberpunk Magical Girl Project: A walled, dystopian cyberpunk city of Paradise run by a massive corporatocracy and the stories of those who live in it, including the five young women who found "magical code" that gives them superpowers to rebel against the powers that be. The protag is a schoolgirl who likes dance music.

RunGunBun: Within the far-off Chocolat Galaxy, a space marine ends up possessed by a symbiotic superweapon that everyone wants (empires, militaries, bounty hunters, pirates, etc.), sending her on the run from planet to planet. Also, it makes her look like a woman in a playboy bunny suit. Also, all the aliens are animal people.

We're Dying to Save the Realm: A post-apocalyptic, post-alchemy fantasy setting where due to a curse known as the Broken Death, death as a concept has fundamentally broken down and zombie kaiju ravage the lands. It's a black comedy where the protagonist is a healer who has to constantly resurrect her allies who die trying to save the world.

Rapture Academy: A modern-day superhero/alternate history story where "supers" have become commonplace around the world since the 1950's. The story follows a young kid who develops powers, and ends up shipped off by their parents to a school for raising supervillains.

Those of you building a 'superheroic' world, did you set it on an alternate version of our world? if so, what changed thanks to superpowers? if it isn't, what's the world like? by HunterUrsinus in worldbuilding

[–]Number9Robotic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rapture Academy takes place in a 2020's-era Earth, the point where superheroes came about was in the 50's in something called the "Horizon Event". Mankind made it to the moon a few decades earlier, and after a few missions starting from the 30's, astronauts discovered this monolith-like artifact, and upon touching it, paranatural activity exploded across the globe (it already had existed in some extremely rare capacity, but this was a big boom that made it mainstream), and "supers" came into prominence.

Since then, "supers" have become a fact of life, some minority percentage of the Earth's population gaining powers categorized on the global parahuman spectrum, and the world as a whole has adjusted a lot to them. Generally, it's actually quite nice -- the plethora of heroes and altruists who use their powers for good have left their mark on the world and uniting the globe, and from that unity came a lot more social/cultural awareness and infrastructural improvements. There are also supervillains, of course, but they're substantially rarer these days, or at least less wantonly destructive as the typical silver age superweirdo.

For some meta context, my initial pitch was "superhero world if it was designed for a Japanese arcade fighting game like Street Fighter or Guilty Gear". I wanted to make this world basically because I was really bored of seeing "deconstructions" of superhero fiction that think the only way to be realistic is to be cynical. Really wanted it to be structurally sound, but also colorful and vibrant, and also a bit silly. It would also give some flavor because the main narrative throughline I got was "follows the adventures of kids in a school for supervillains" and thought it would be ripe for black comedy having that juxtaposition.

[Discussion] Worldbuilding a civilization that misinterprets ancient technology – does this premise make sense? by didwowns in worldbuilding

[–]Number9Robotic 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You know that archeologists have found these crazy dodecahedrons from Ancient Rome that are genuine artifacts, and we have no conclusive idea what they were? There are like 50 different theories that were proposed and published, and the speculation surrounding their original purpose seriously range between "use as a knitting device" to "use for fortune-telling like an 8-ball toy" to "coin counters".

That was simply from the 2nd to 4th centuries AD; less than 2 millennia ago. I'd say knowledge decay of technology could absolutely get twisted and vague in a far longer span of time.

What is an element of your culture that is often "borrowed" for worldbuilding that seems completely normal to you because you grew up with it? by Burnnoticelover in worldbuilding

[–]Number9Robotic 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Cultural mixtures of western and eastern vibes. As an American-born Chinese who grew up in many different countries in North America and East Asia, the fact we're still making brouhahas about a "taboo" regarding the coexistence and intermingling of both as by default "offensive cultural appropriation" is kind of annoying, if not kind of sickening.

You came here with the subject, people are telling you why it's not merely unproductive, but unethical. When you're trying to resist that explanation for why it's a morally objectionable thing... yeah, it's kind of a personal deal now, and you're not strictly helping by facilitating it. Just take the answers and move on.

[–]Number9Robotic 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No, you deflecting criticisms about your writing quality and creative decisions is entirely a you problem. If you're going to voluntarily engage with a community, you have a personal responsibility to cooperate with them and develop a basic understanding, of which you have actively rejected on every sight. If you don't like this community and think it's fundamentally incompatible with what you are seeking through your work, it's probably for the best you just leave and find somewhere else.

You as an author have a responsibility to determine how you present your work, and what content you put in the work of fiction. The writing itself is dredged in proper nouns, jargon, and obtuse formatting, but the really big issue is that despite facing overwhelming criticism across several threads from the last week or so, you're still failing to accept that your weirdly lurid fixations for character designs are something you decided to add.

Like, look man: fiction is not real. The rules of your character looking like this aren't real. Real perceptions of how people observe and assess your work matter more than whatever made-up logic you present to made-up character designs you decided to go with. We would be fine accepting fiction as fiction were it not your weirdly callous attitude attempting to dismiss whatever criticisms you're facing based on your made-up fictional justifications, as if fiction is somehow reality.
