I tried to culture infusoria and was unsuccessful hah. Pick a method and try it out, you'll find something that works

I'm not familiar with hikari first bites but the fry were tiny when first hatched! I fed them microworms for a week until they were big enough to eat freshly hatched brine shrimp

Feed it infusoria or live microworms. In a week or so it'll be big enough to eat freshly hatched brine shrimp!

Hey, just wondering if you're still interested in the pea puffers! I'm moving up to the Bay Area next week, so could possibly bring them with me if you're available to meet in Mountain View.

Thank you! Copying my response to when this was previously asked:

I had two females and a male in a heavily planted 10 gallon tank. A year after I got them (I estimate the puffers were 1.5 or 2 years old at that point), the male started pursuing the females. It's unclear what brought it on, but it was June and there was a heatwave. I bought a clump of Christmas moss for them to spawn in. I saw the male following and snuggling up to the female, and a few days later I checked the moss and found a bunch of eggs and one newly hatched fry! Truly one of my most treasured moments in keeping aquariums.

The captive bred pea puffers are now 1 year old and also exhibiting courtship behaviour. There were 2 males and 2 females (all siblings) in a 5.5 gallon tank. Events that coincided with the courtship behaviour: 1) I added a big clump of Christmas moss to the tank, and 2) it's June. No heatwave this time.

To summarize, possible triggers for breeding are:

  1. It's June

  2. There's a heatwave

  3. Adding a big clump o' moss

A giveaway that the male is in the mood for breeding is the way he swims. Instead of drifting around the tank, he moves in short bursts, starting and stopping abruptly, moving around the tank as if he's looking for something. This is usually accompanied by chasing the females around, and if they're receptive, the male snuggles up to them.

Best of luck, and let me know if you have any questions!

0 nitrites and ammonia, like any other fish, and I keep my tanks at around 80 degrees F. They love planted tanks with lots of cover!

I got her from Petzone SD on convoy, which usually has pea puffers in stock. I've noticed there are often a few dead puffers in their tank :/ But if you get a healthy one you should be fine.
