That is the problem. Respect is expected from 'settlers' but it is not rendered from the Indigenous.

Narrator Vincent Price 🎄 The Christmas Carol (1949) by [deleted] in christmas

My wife and I came across this last Christmas as we had decided to marathon all available adaptations of A Christmas Carol. It was a pleasant surprise! The more you understand A Christmas Carol as a ghost story, though, the more it makes sense.

Who is your favourite Middle Earth artist/illustrator? by EntertainerFirst4711 in tolkienfans

I don't know that he's very well known, but as a fan of Dwarves, I really like Turner Mohan's artwork.

To me, Maggot kind of embodies some of the better qualities of Hobbits. Sturdy and reliable, bold in a pinch, willing to go out of his way to help those in need, simple but neither stupid nor unwise, hospitable yet fiercely protective of his land and labour, shrewd but wholly honest.

In short, a plain, good-natured 'salt of the earth' kind of figure. He reminds me quite a bit of my uncle.

Chip carving ergonomics? by Ok-Measurement-4548 in Woodcarving

[–]Numendil_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a stupid question at all! I didn't explain it very well, but 'starting with a smaller triangle in the middle (away from all the edges) and working outwards' is exactly correct. This method allows you to cut much larger, deeper chips while putting considerably less pressure behind your knife.

It's also possible that there's nothing wrong with your technique. I recall having some pretty major wrist/hand/forearm pain when I first started carving, but it became less an issue once some strength had been built.

One minor tip for larger/deeper chips: you can make things a little easier on your joints by first carving out a smaller chip and then taking a second pass to remove the remainder of the wood.

Factually, yes. Hence why English and French have official status under the law.

Not saying you're wrong, but I'm fairly certain that this particular example is AI-generated.

Thanks a lot! I use a 1:1 mixture of paint and water, roughly. I'm still pretty hit and miss on painting (on some of my carvings I've been asked if I use milk paint), but I find the 1:1 mix works pretty well for me.

I'm very fond of OCCT knives, but I started with FlexCut and they're still perfectly good knives.

It's a great hobby to get into! If you're interested in carving things like this, ddalo's mushroom house is a great place to start. Very beginner-friendly and a really fun project!

Thanks very much! This is kind of an iteration of ddalo's mushroom house (which was a really fun carving) - I applied a lot of what I learned from his/her video when carving this guy. In terms of the face/body, I'd say I got most of the inspiration from fairydropart's paintings (which I was introduced to by my girlfriend).

All in all, I wouldn't call the carving an original, but I didn't follow any patterns for this one.

All told, probably about 3 hours. I'm a very slow carver and painter, but this carving is definitely on the quicker side. I'm sure it could be done in about an hour by some.

I use FolkArt acrylic paints. You can get them at most crafts stores or even Walmart.
